Customer Review: Great Board - Note: Photo here shows slightly older model...

I bought a Sportcraft Player's Choice (I'll abbreviate that to "SPC") in early December, and after a few weeks of play decided to upgrade to a Winmau Blade 3 ("WB3"). This is a review of the WB3 and a comparison to the less expensive Sportcraft, mostly fo folks who might wonder if this is worth the extra cash.
1. Bristles: The density of the fibers equates to the longevity of the board. The WB3 fibers are very fine, light colored sisal that are tightly bound and compressed into the shape of the board. Although I've only had this for a few days, it feels like it would last a few years with regular play. By contrast the SPC fibers are dark brown, seemingly randomly arranged and much looser than the WB3. After a few weeks of play the fibers are popping out of the board.
2. Spider (metal dividers): WB3 has blade shaped dividers that are embedded in the board without staples. The nice thing about no staples is there is less for a dart to hit and bounce back from. The blade also directs a dart into the board, again resulting in far less bounce outs. The SPC has standard round metal dividers and staples. The staples around the bulls eye are plentiful causing many bounces.
3. Number Ring: The WBC has a white metal number ring that can rotate with the board. The nice part about getting a board with rotating numbers is that you can spin the board and change which cells go with which numbers... allowing you to extend the life of the board. The SPC has numbers painted on the board, therefore it cannot be rotated.
4. Price: The SPC was a great price...about what you would pay for a rolled paper board (~$20 shipped). The WB3 was on sale at just less than $50 shipped.
5. Mounting: The SPC had an off-center hole in the back. I had to re-measure and re-drill the pilot hole for the screw. The WB3 hole was also slightly off center (not as much as the SPC) but still could be mounted.
Bottom Line: By the Winmau. The WB3 is about 2.5 times the price, but if you are slightly serious about playing darts, spend the money. Right now the WB3 is a good price since the blade 4 is about to be released in the US (expected February 2011). If you are an ultra serious dart player, I would wait for the Blade 4.
Final Note: The Blade 3 has two different graphic designs - the one shown here with the roman numerals, and the newer blade 3 version that can be seen on the Amazon UK site (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Winmau-Blade-III-Bristle-Dartboard/dp/B0012LCMQG). I purchased in December 2010 and received the newer model. The newer model also has a black outer ring instead of an unfinished steel ring.
