Sports reviews of Wenzel Insta-Bed Queen Raised Sure Grip Bottom with Built-in PumpCustomer Review: CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I always call customer service PRIOR to purchasing a product just to see how well they treat people. I just got off the phone with Wenzel customer service (800 325-8368) and here is what I discovered:
I was on hold for six minutes before I actually spoke with a person. There were a lot of clicks, pops and periods of dead silence that may confuse some people into thinking they had been disconnected but that was not the case. Just hang on. I called on a Thursday at 10:30 am (eastern time) so I might have called at a time when the call volume was low, but I was impressed that the hold time was reasonable.
The gentleman who answered the call was courteous and did not try to pry contact information out of me prior to dealing with the reason why I called.
My first question was about the warranty. I said I was not able to find any warranty details on Amazon.com or the Wenzel website. He directed me to the Insta-bed website (insta-bed.com) where I found it quickly.
I asked him if the pump went out or there was no electricity available, was it possible to fill the mattress manually. He said yes, there was another valve on the side where it could be filled.
I then asked about leaks. He said most people who called about leaks didn't realize that the plastic stretches when it is initially inflated and it will go soft the first few times it is used. People will assume it has a leak when all it really needs is additional air to firm it back up. He also said that there are some seals around the pump that may leak but those leaks can be corrected quite easily. Other than that, the one year warranty covered leaks, bulges, pump failure - whatever.
Warranty exchange consists of contact them to get an RMA and then cutting out the label information from the side of the mattress (rendering the mattress useless) and sending the label in with the RMA. You don't have to ship the whole mattress back!
So, all of you who who said this thing leaked, or complained that this mattress does not have a warranty, I would encourage you to call them and see how they treat you.
Customer Review: 3rd time is a charm for air bed Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
CAVEAT EMPTOR: Don't buy any INTEC air bed products as their air baffles run head to foot and they have a propensity to unglue themselves. Don't buy anything titled, "PURE COMFORT Extra Long Queen Raised Air Mattress". A normal size for queen is 60"x80"x22". They (PURE COMFORT) printed up a bunch of cartons and a single sheet instruction advisory indicating "PURE COMFORT Extra Long Queen Raised Air Mattress" but filled the box with this: PURE COMFORT Queen Size Raised Air Bed 74"x60"x22". Trying to get a 60x80 air mattress from the Amazon vendor was a waste of time as it arrived with a slow leak. The second try at getting a 60x80 got me the mislabeled carton and instructions. It held air but is somewhat short for a 6' person. I refolded that for return shipment (which was declined) but the other day when I got tired of constantly airing up the 60x80, this 74x60 was unpacked and aired up but also developed a leak. Now, the PURE COMFORT type airbed is superior (when it holds air) as it has many single round air pockets and you don't feel the INTEC type baffle and is actually very comfortable with a flat bed. So, I finally tried a 3rd product, the WENZEL Insta-Bed Queen Raised Sure Grip Bottom with Built-in pump. Does not take a brain surgeon to fill this product up and I don't understand why the other reviews mention a problem airing up. Just physically lift up/down the thick plastic away from the intake valve and the pump works very efficiently once there is some air in the bed. While this bed has baffles, it is like a coiled snake from head to foot and the end result is a flat bed. Very comfortable but the claim about a sure grip bottom so it doesn't slide probably only works when used on a wood floor.Wenzel Insta-Bed Queen Raised Sure Grip Bottom with Built-in Pump. Apparently, it has one air pump pumping up 2 separate levels in case one takes a dump. Amazon should dump both INTEC and PURE COMFORT on Target and rid themselves of the two clunkers (the PURE COMFORT mislabeling borders on fraud).
Customer Review: Very good airbed Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Bought this airbed in November for my parents to use over the holidays. They used it every night for approximately 3 weeks, inflated and took down every day. My parents felt that it did lose a little air during the night, so I encouraged them to put more air in it at the beginning. I think this may have been from the air being cold.
I slept in it one night to try it out before my parents arrived, and the air in the airbed gets truly cold when the weather is cold. I slept in it for 6 hours before moving to my bed because I couldn't get warm. After that I bought a down-filled mattress cover at Wal-mart. My parents did not have any problem with it being cold. I was able to sleep on the bed another night with my mother and sister (it really is quite big, although we are not big people) and the bed did not lose air and felt great.
(A note on comfort: the bed was very comfortable and firm, I do not like squishy soft beds. It felt like a real mattress, except for the row lines on the top. The mattress cover helped make it feel more like a real mattress.)
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who needs a queen-sized airbed. I recommend when using the airbed for the first time to fill it up soft and wait an hour before filling it up to firm, as another reviewer on Amazon.com recommended for any airbed.

Review update 7-1-09
I have had my grandparents and a friend sleep on my airbed since my original review. They thought the bed was great! My friend used it for two weeks while I was on vacation, and never aired it up (it did need some more air, but she didn't know how to do it), but was still able to sleep on it.
Note: as far as sheets go I did not have any trouble with using queen-sized bed sheets. The queen-sized mattress cover fits very snuggly and the sheet on top of it does not move.
Customer Review: Completely met expectations Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
...I read reviews (mostly favorable) here before purchasing it and the product has fully met (and possibly exceeded) my expectations. First, perhaps it is luck of the draw, but I did not have any leakage problems whatsoever -- to the contrary, while I waited for my furniture to arrive (during an out of state move), this bed served as my only piece of furniture (so I was sitting/reclined on it quite a bit) over the course of nearly a month - and it was more comfortable than the bed I had been sleeping on while briefly staying in a hotel! Every three days or so, I would have to add a little bit of air (like 30 seconds of effort) - but I attributed this to the fact that I spent so much time on it (as I said, I used this as my bed AND as a "couch").
As for particularly good aspects of this product -- I especially like the fact that the air mattress is so "tall" (compared to most air mattresses I have used before this one). It makes it feel less like an air bed and more like a real bed (no crawling around on the floor and very easy to get in and out of bed). Also unlike other air mattresses I have used before, this one is very helpful in that the same motor that it uses to inflate, it also uses to suck air out when you are deflating it -- so gone are the days of searching for (and emptying) random air pockets when you are trying to roll up the mattress and put it away -- this was an unexpected bonus!
The only "negative" I can really give it is that if you have two people sleeping on it, you do tend to roll into the middle a little bit. However, because I am so accustomed to sleeping on Tempurpedic (my usual bed), perhaps this is because I have forgotten what it is like to sleep on non-Tempurpedic mattresses (e.g., I rolled in to the center of the hotel's non-tempurpedic bed also)....
Customer Review: Better than I expected Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This bed is great! I was surprised at how comfortable it is. It inflated very quickly (just a few minutes). I love the built in pump! I bought this because my brother was coming to visit, and I needed a spare bed. I do have a hide-a-bed couch, but we all know those are not comfortable for long term use. My brother thought the bed was very comfortable. The pump allows easy, quick firmness adjustments. We did notice the bed leaking a little air, but over two weeks, it was minimal.
We did not notice the issue of the queen size fitted sheet creeping up the sides of the mattress like other reviewers noted. I just used a standard queen size sheet set with 15" deep pockets.
The bedroom has a hardwood floor, and I did notice the bed makes a lot of noise as you move on it and it rubs and flexes against the floor. I didn't try it on carpet though. My wife and I slept on the bed right next to my 1 yr old to test it out, and the noise was not so bad as to wake her up as we got in and out of, and moved around the bed. I'm not sure if this is because of the Sure Grip Bottom, or it it's just because it's plastic. I'm leaning towards blaming it on being plastic. I'm not sure what the purpose of the Sure Grip Bottom is, since the bed is used on flat surfaces, and beds moving around the room are not an issue that I've ever encountered. This bed stayed put very nicely.
The bed deflated quickly, and I was happy to see that the bed fit well in the included bag. I hate it when a bag is provided that requires it to be perfectly folded to fit.
Overall, a great purchase. I would recommend it to anyone. This price is very reasonable, in my mind. This will be our spare bed for guests, and it's a LOT cheaper than buying a bed and mattresses of comparable comfort.
