My boyfriend bought me this hoop so that I'd have some sort of cardio exercise when I came to visit him, 3000 miles away from home, without having to pay to use a gym or run outside. I needed something low impact that could get my heart rate up because I have fibromyalgia and I do best with exercises that are low impact that get the heart going.
The quick review-
Pros: Fun, Entertaining, a great way to work out, can do it in your own home as long as you move furniture/people/pets/plants out of the way.
Cons: It's kind of hard to put together but not impossible. It also doesn't travel THAT compactly so if you're flying somewhere you might want to pass on bringing the hoop. If you're traveling by car/train/boat where you don't have to pay that ridiculous "overweight bag fee" then you have no excuse not to bring this because you really can do this anywhere!
The longer review-
This is a really fun exercise and I'm so glad he bought me this thing! It doesn't even feel like real exercise even though I am totally sweating and my heart rate is up when I'm finished. I tried using it while watching TV and honestly I didn't find this as rewarding as just blasting music and kind of "dancing" while hooping if that makes any kind of sense... put on Lady Gaga, hoop and dance away, no one is watching so it's all good!
Depending on your fitness level, you may want to start out slow. I'm someone who regularly exercises 30-45 minutes 3-4 times a week, using the elliptical machine, running and/or yoga so I thought it was okay for me to start out on 20 minutes straight with the hula hoop. That was a mistake! I was in a ton of pain afterwards, so I recommend starting out at 5 minutes, then building up your time even if it doesn't seem like much. I also break up my workout and do two 10 or 15 minute sessions, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. This puts less stress on my core so I don't have to stand there for 20 minutes straight.
Because I've mentioned fibroymalgia, I'm not sure if I recommend this 100% to fibromyalgia sufferers just because our bodies are so different. If you're not already in some sort of workout routine, then I would suggest finding something else that works your entire body like an elliptical machine, building up and then try adding something like this hula hoop and be very careful and don't rush into a workout. If you're already in a work out routine then this could be a really fun addition. Exercise is something that can help the pain of fibromyalgia so this is why I think it's important for us fibro folk to find FUN exercises that keep us mobile and active. Of course ask your doctor and use your best judgment - us fibro folk know what will hurt us and what won't and if you think this will cause harm, please stay away! When I get back home in a few weeks I am going to ask my physical therapists what they think since they help me with exercise. It may also be worth starting out on the 1.5 lb hoop instead of the 3 lb.
Apparently 30 minutes of this can burn 200 calories! I didn't buy this for weight loss but I have noticed after about 3 weeks I have some nice ab definition going on that I have never ever had in my life. I've always been on the slender side and even before I got fibro I could never get any muscle tone or definition so this is exciting to me, especially for my abs!
Other people have said that they've been bruised by hooping. This has not been my experience - I am Casper the Friendly Ghost pale and I can bruise if you just look at me the wrong way. Of course different bodies, different body chemistry but I wanted to say that this doesn't happen to everyone and I was very surprised it didn't happen to me.
