About Victorinox
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

Sports reviews of Victorinox SwissTool Spirit Multi-Tool with Pouch

Customer Review: Best of the Swisstools
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is my favorite Swisstool. There are two common criticisms of the Swisstool Spirit compared to the other Swisstools: the lack of a ruler and that the blade is a straight-razor-shaped serrated blade instead of the normal swiss-army blade shape.

I actually prefer the serrated blade because its shape makes it easier to cut by pulling toward you, kind of like a box cutter. If you need to stab something you can use the awl.

The lack of a ruler on the handle is regrettable, but the curve in the handle makes using the pliers much more comfortable.

The scissors on the Spirit are *much* nicer than the scissors on the Swisstool X and the various swiss-army knives. They have a steel lever instead of a chinsy spring.

The Spirit is smaller, lighter, and easier to handle than the other Swisstools.

For me, the lack of a ruler is more than compensated for by a better blade shape, a better pair of scissors, and better overall ergonomics.

That said, all the Swisstools are wonderful. I prefer them to Leathermans (?).

Customer Review: Locking blades the only way to go...
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This product does 2 things most others don't.

The blades lock, and they are easy to open.

1) Locking blades

Anyone that has owned a Leatherman or other brand multi tool knows that most of them don't have locking blades. Why do you need these? Because you'd look mighty stupid cutting off a finger when the blade folds while you are cutting something else. Some brands have started adding locking blades, but this one has locks on all the folding tools, including the screwdriver.

2) Easy to open

It's a major hassle when you need a tool just to open a tool. Anyone that made the mistake of buying a cheap tool will know that you'll lose a nail just trying to open some of the features. This Swisstool is perfect since the blades all open smoothly without too much effort.

Other pros are a great quality pouch and precision pliers, the pliers on this model are so well made that you can use them as tweezers to remove splinters.

Customer Review: I want to collect more, but this does everything I need
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I don't use this tool regularly, but I always pack it when I'm traveling. As a man, you never know what might need fixing. I even have a full tool set, but I'd rather pull out my Spirit.

After a year, it still has all the polish and durability it did when I got it. The blades have dulled slightly of course, but it's still as fluid as ever. My brother has the Leatherman Wave, and it takes a lot more effort to pull out the tools because the finish is corroding slightly. He's told me he likes mine a lot more.

Pliers are GREAT, and so is the Phillips screwdriver. Scissors are awesome too. The leather sheath is very hard to beat too. I sometimes wish it had a snap instead of velcro, but the velcro's actually solid too, and once the leather wears in, it keeps itself closed nicely.

If you're on the fence about this product, allow me to push you over. you won't be disappointed with this multitool.

Customer Review: Excellent! One caveat ...
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I read a bunch of reviews on Amazon and elsewhere before deciding on this multitool over a Leatherman or Gerber. I have both other brands and they are excellent, well-made tools, but the workmanship and the quality of the Spirit is second to none! Tight tolerances, super locks, SOLID! What's the caveat, you may ask? I was looking for a tool that was lighter than my Gerber 400 Fisherman's tool at 7.2 ounces. I was leaning towards the Kick or Fuse, but ran into the Victorinox - advertised at 3.25 inches and 5.75 ounces. It's actually 4.20 inches and 7.50 ounces so, while a little lighter than the Wave, an ultralight tool it ain't. Just be warned: once you get your hands on this one, you won't ship it back ... plan on ponying up some more $$$ for your backpacking multitool because you'll have to KEEP THE SPIRIT, baby!!

Customer Review: The best multitool?
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I recently added Victornox's Spirit to my multitool collection, and I have been very impressed with the quality and functionality of this Swiss made product. All the tool's implements open and close easily, and the locking mechanism is much easier to operate than its competitors. Everything is finished with a high polish that adds to the Spirit's appearance, and the leather sheath is nicely designed and finished. I own and use the Leatherman Super Tool, the Bear multitool, and the original Gerber tool, and I prefer the Spirit to these other multitools. My only criticism is that the knife blade is serrated and a poor choice for a tool with only one blade. I would have preferred the spear point design used by Victorinox in its other multitool. All in all, this is the best multitool I have used.
