About Victorinox In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.
Sports reviews of Victorinox SwissTool Spirit Multi-Tool with PouchCustomer Review: it's what James Bond carries on his missions Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This multitool is among tools what Mercedes S class is among cars. Impeccable fit and finish, smooth, and has everything you need.
I have many other multitools, but held off on buying this since I had never seen a good price until recently. Now that I have it, I wonder what took me so long. It makes most (all!) other tools look crude by comparison.
Everything is accessible from the outside without opening the pliers. Everything locks. The knife looks oddly shaped at first, but it actually makes sense. The dull tip makes it hard to stab yourself or someone else - for punching holes, you have the awl. The forward portion of the blade is serrated, and the 1/3 closest to the handle is plain edge, which actually gives you more control for peeling, whittling, etc. The main screwdriver / pry tool is thick, the beefiest I have seen on any multitool, and that is a good thing. The pliers themselves are not as wide opening (because they are a bit shorter) than those on the Leatherman Wave. The pliers are also very substantial, beefier than than the pliers on all other mid-sized tools I have seen. The handles are slightly curved, in a way that mimics "real" pliers when the pliers are open, and also making it unlikely to pinch your palm when in use.
This is a mid-sized tool, in the same ball park as the Leatherman Wave, only thinner. It may be larger than you think - in fact, I was surprised myself. The original Victorinox SwissTool was monstrously big and heavy, so they made the Spirit model.
The only issues with this tool are (1) weighs more than 7 ounces, so the specs on Amazon are wrong and (2) nothing opens with one hand except perhaps the pliers; blades etc. open like on traditional Swiss Army Knives, with a nail nick.
This is a very capable tool in a thin and good looking package. Made in Switzerland with quality and finish that no other multitool matches, at least today. If the set of tools meet your needs, go ahead and buy one - you will be impressed.

Update: 5/6/2010 - As of this writing the Spirit multi-tool combo (including a Rally knife) has a $10 instant rebate so the combo is actually $1 cheaper than the Spirit w/Pouch. I picked up another one :D
The strangest thing about the Spirit multi-tools is that it feels both incredibly high-tech and at the same time like some ritual object. There's this *tradition* about it that I'd normally scoff at, but the quality of the Spirit is so high that I have to attribute it to years and years of almost worshipful attention to detail. And yet, there's a surgical quality to the workmanship. It's precise; it's fluid. For example, there's no spring assist on the pliers, but the action is so smooth that at first I wasn't sure. That's how good it is.
I have many multi-tools including several Leatherman Waves, Gerber Suspension and Strata, SOGs, and a host of lesser known manufacturers. And though I enjoy watching Survivorman episodes and making camp stoves from coffee cans, most of my time spent with these tools is in the yard or the garage or in the office.
The Spirit is about a centimeter longer and slightly slimmer than the Leatherman Wave when closed. When the pliers are opened they are both within a couple millimeters in length. It has all the standard tools including a blade, file, scissors, bottle opener, Phillips/slotted drivers, awl, and even a chisel/scraper. The tools are all accessible with the pliers closed. Unlike the Wave which has an industrial stylishness, the Spirit is more refined, more elegant. Which is not to imply in any way that it is less rugged. It's easily one of the sturdies multi-tools that I own, and that's dozens.
About the only downside -- and this is a stretch -- is the almost mirror-like finish of the metal. My hands tends to perspire and it feels a bit slick. The grip is good though, and the handles are long enough to make this a non-issue.
Customer Review: Perfect for everyone! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Being a carpenter, a tech for my school's theater, a cyclist, and a paintballer this multi-tool is used ALOT. It is by far my most used tool, and I have a full work shop.
Pros:
1. I have been using it for 2 years now and never once had a problem with any of the tools.
2. The pliers are very strong and easy to grip while being used as pliers.
3. The scissors, my most used tool, are still very sharp after years of use. I have used them for cutting gels (for stage lights), paper, tons of plastic bags, finger nails, and MANY more things yet they are still very sharp. Just the other day I very stupidly, while cutting a plastic bag full of screws, ran the scissors into my figure and got a small, but deep cut in my middle finger.
4.The wood saw almost never comes in handy while building (I prefer my larger saws), but still comes in handy. My favorite use was once while paintballing my pants got tangled on a torn bush and I couldn't pull myself free so I used the saw to cut though the bush and free myself without getting shot in the proses.
5.I really like the locking mechanism for the tools, holds strong and easy to release.
Cons:
1.The only straight edged blade is about an inch long, not very useful.
2.Sometimes can feel large on my belt while biking, but the reassurance of having it is great.
3.The file like to get a layer of dirt between the teath, but still works perfectly, just looks dirtiy.
Customer Review: A cut above the rest Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I was after a multi-tool for some time and was all excited about the Skeletool by Leatherman. It seemed just perfect for what I needed - the basics. However, after I started researching multi-tools, it seemed that maybe a more robust tool would be the way to go. I ended up buying both. They both fit different niches and they each have there pros and cons. Most noticeable to me was the manufacturing quality of the Victorinox. When this unit arrived, it was a work of art. All the implements operated smoothly, everything locked into place with a secure snap and it is rock solid tight. You can just feel the quality in your hand on the Swisstool Sprint. The Leatheman Skeletool was very stiff and the blade is difficult to operate. Perhaps this will loosen up over time. The Skeletool also arrived with the external clip (a nice feature I wish the Swisstool Spirit had) falling off requiring me to purchase a special torx driver to fix. There was just not that solid feel of quality like with the Victorinox.
I will use both of these tools depending on what I'm going to be doing that day, but if I had to buy just one - it would be the Swisstool Spirit hands down.
Customer Review: Very Good Tool Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I used the SwissTool Plus almost every day for three years until I lost it, and I bought the SwissTool Spirit Plus to replace it.
The first impression is that it fits better in the hand, but it feels less solid. I mean, the other tool produced a strong sound while closing and required force to open. It still felt new after three years of heavy use.
However, with the SwissTool one could break his nails trying to open the sheets appling force with a wrong angle. The new tool is much more confortable in that respect.
Also a big improvement are the scissors instead the plain knife. The more useful serrated knife is still there. There are 3-4 new functions and the bit case holds the bits much tighter. The leather pouch has a better construction, but I prefered the black color.
Another benefit is that the new tool is much lighter. To bad there is no ruler on the Spirit, since after some time with the other tool I used to measure small objects or distances on a map quite frequently.
In short, the Spirit is an improvement over the outstanding original tool. I only wonder if the new model will be as solid as the old one.
