About Victorinox
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

Customer Review: Best multi-tool I've found
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

I just finished ordering my second Spirit tool -- the one I've been using for the past couple years was confiscated by TSA when I accidently left it in my carry-on bag a few weeks ago. I've owned Gerber and Leatherman brand tools before, and the Victorinox is definitely a cut above in terms of make, finish, tool variety and accessibility.

I really like how I can access all of the tools I use most often (scissors, screwdrivers, knife) without having first unfold the tool into the plier configuration. Most other brands aren't set up this way. Having scissors is another very important feature to me, and these work very well, as does the "sheep's foot" style serrated blade. The blunt tip of the blade makes opening packages and cutting delicate things safer, and after well over a year of daily use the blade on my old tool was still razor sharp and ready to cut through anything. The pliers and wire cutters work well, but are on the small side, and if I found myself using the wire cutters all the time I'd probably wish for more cutting area. I think the bigger SwissTool, along with SOG mutli-tools, are probably better in the plier/cutter department, although SOG is far more expensive, and in my opinion less comfortable to use and carry.

The mirrored finish on the Spirit tool really holds up well, and everything functions precisely: the tools can be easily pulled out one at a time, and they all lock and unlock positively and intuitively. Its also a great size, smaller than most other multi tools but with great functionality, and the curved handles make it easy on the hands in high-torque applications. It looks and feels very well made, and after handling several different makes of multi-tool I still think Victorinox is by the far the best made tool out there. I went for the "Spirit Plus" this time, which is the same Spirit tool but with a ratchet and bit set. It hasn't arrived yet but I have high hopes. . .

Customer Review: Well Made, A Gentleman's Tool

A good multitool is worth its weight in gold, but only figuratively. The Victorinox Spirit is elegant and fully functional, but the price is not cheap and the quality of its cutting steel is still very pedestrian, as all Victorinox blades. I suspect it's on the save level as a good 420HC steel, but would be happier with even better.

There's a certain elegance that makes this tool desirable, but for someone who really needs tools every day, the Charge TTi, in my opinion, would be the way to go. After a good bladed knife (which the Leatherman Charge TTi provides -- in S30V steel, one of the best), the next most useful tool for me is a good screwdriver, and the Spirit simply lacks the bits and strength of the Charge. After that, the other tools can be left to the user.

Unlike the Leathermans, the tools don't lock on this model, which is a shame. But they're still very usable. And while the Charge is like a good sixpack of beer, the Spirit is like a fine wine. The blades are not as long nor as strong as the Leatherman's, but they work, and there's a beauty about the Spirit that would not make it out of place with a nice business suit.

If you occasionally open and work on a computer, the Spirit will do. If you do it every day, you're better off with the Charge. The beauty is far greater than depicted in the photos above, but I like the utility of the Charge and the elegance of the Spirit.

Customer Review: Almost perfect

This is the first multitool I have ever purchased and I intend to keep it with me only for emergency purposes, i.e., in the car, while hiking, etc. I'm happy with the variety of tools, the quality of workmanship, and the smooth action of deploying, locking and releasing each tool. The leather pouch has a velcro closure, it is constructed with heavy stitching, and it can accept a belt passing behind it (up to 2" wide) so it can be worn.

The scissor design has been changed to a lever spring action rather than the older thin spring action which could fail by misaligning, the metal and wood saws are precision tools and appear to be cut by laser or diamond, the pliers are stamped with the Victorinox logo and are lightly brushed, and the overall finish is very clean.

My only design concern is that the large knife blade has a scalloped edge for most of its length. While this edge is as sharp as a razor, the scalloping prevents it from being re-sharpened as may be needed with wear and tear. I would much rather prefer a straight-edged knife so I would be able to renew the edge when needed with a sharpening stone or by using a steel.

Otherwise, this is a smart-looking asset to have around for emergencies and should last many years. A good deal for the price.

Customer Review: A cool addition to the swisstool family.

What's good:
1) The needlenose pliers in spirit is more useful if you need need to grip smaller items.
2) Smaller size, easier to carry.
3) Inner tools can be opened when the pliers is closed.
4) Even better fit and finish in general. Eg locking buttoms, individual springs and that unique blade...etc.

What's bad:
1) Why use the dead pins to connect the whole tool? You can't fix it, you can't change the inner tools.... They should use screws instead.
2) May not 100% stainless steel, note that the file or some parts maybe casehardened steel.
3) No ruler.
4) Unlike some people, i don't like the curved handles of the spirit, sure they make the pliers action perform better, but if you want to use the outside tools, it performs poorer...
5) The new scissors design is bad, the spring is still under tension when closed and it's mouth is so short!
6) That stupid and poorly-designed hook. I only need a simple reamer...
