About Victorinox In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.
Sports reviews of Victorinox SwissTool Spirit Multi-Tool with PouchCustomer Review: Great tool even better value Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Very Important update. I was using the phillips screw driver today and cut myself pretty badly on the file while it was closed. The file has a sharp edge that your thumb can slide over when pushing on the screwdriver. I fixed this by filing down the file. Still love it.
I, like most of the reviewers, own a lot of multi tools. I've been a leatherman fan and still am but this Spirit tool is making me think I need to change that. It feels a little more well built than a leatherman. I know that's not very specific but it just does. I also am surprised by the size. It is clearly longer than a wave or charge but it is slimmer in every other way. I also think the smooth sides is an advantage in your pocket. I don't find it convenient to wear a knife and this one seems to come out of my pocket better. As for the tools. They seem more refined than a leatherman. The edges that should be sharp are really sharp and the ones that should be smooth are. The tools also seem to be made of better steal. The lack of a bit changer as on the wave is a plus and minus. I think it gives the leatherman a little more flexibility but I don't know how many times I couldn't fit the Phillips head on the leatherman into the place were the screw is and had to go get a screwdriver. That will not be as big a problem here. The Phillips is long thin and sturdy. The hacksaw is much better and the files seem sharper, but the diamond file on a leatherman is a good tool I will miss. The scissors are much sturdier and longer and again feel like better steel was used. The lock release is really smooth and you can easily do this one handed. You can't however open the knife without using two hands. This isn't a killer but would have been nice. The blade itself is strange but incredibly sharp and actually great for a lot of things like lunch time activities apple or bread cutting or spreading mayo. I don't find myself stabbing stuff very often so the lack of a point is more odd than missed. The blades design seems very strong and while not made of 134A or some other exotic steel is really great at actually cutting. The pliers are really great. They don't meet until the tip so you can really pinch something that the end something the leatherman is not good at. The other really big plus is the wire cutter is just a little bigger than a wave's and will cut all the way through a wire tie. The leatherman leaves a little nub that I have to cut again. The bottle/can opener is much better. I don't open a lot of cans with my knife but I do find the tool useful for a lot of other things. This one is much stronger and would actually open a can much faster and easier. I broke my leathermans not opening a can but something it should have handled. All and all a great knife and with more tools than a leatherman a better quality feel. Leatherman seems to focus on the steel of the blade and not the tools. I would highly recommend this tool and think its probably the best value. Though I got it on sale for about $50.
Customer Review: Exudes Quality But Its Blunt Blade is an Ugly Duckling Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I own Leatherman multi-tools including the new Wave, Pulse, Juice S2, Skeletool CX, Micra, Squirt S4, and Squirt P4. I also own about 20 Victorinox Swiss Army Knives ranging from nearly all the recent Alox models and many cellidor models including the old Champion, Swiss Champ, Swiss Champ XLT, and Cybertool 41. After owning all of these types of pocket knives and multi-tools, I can say that Victorinox makes the highest quality, highest consistency multi-tools and pocket knives. (Don't get me wrong, I like Leatherman a lot as they make well-designed tools, too. But the consistency is lacking with Leatherman when compared to Victorinox.)
The primary strengths of the Vic SwissTool Spirit include:
All locking tools
Access to tools with the pliers in the closed position
Presence of scissors (which distinguishes it from the Spirit "S" model)
Reputation of extremely good corrosion resistance
Chisel (which is unsual in any multitool)
Extremely good wood saw (better than Leatherman)
Very light weight for its size (only 5.5 oz)
Premium brown leather case (best case I've seen that comes with a tool, only downside to the case is that it cannot be worn in the horizontal position on a belt)
Extremely attractive with highly polished metal handles and tools
Extremely comfortable handles for pliers
There are downsides, however, and they are in my opinion:
"Butterknife" shape of the only blade (it does NOT have the familiar drop point that Victorinox usually uses in their SAKs or MTs)
Serrations on that blunt blade take up most of the length
Plain edge is a very small part of the blade near the joint
Philips screwdriver that needs to be squared off as it slips quite easily
Scissors are tiny (and smaller than any other multi-tool I own listed)
The Vic Spirit exudes quality and precision crafting. People are always split on their opinion of the blunt, "butterknife" shape of the main blade. I dislike it. The serrations are also in the front of the blade, rather than the back part like most other brands. The serrations can be ground off, however.
If you want a drop point blade, then you can get the Spirit "S" version which substitutes a drop point blade, but removes the scissors.
Customer Review: Best plier based multitool out there Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Even though I typically gravitate to a "normal" Swiss Army Knife for everyday carry, I like having a plier-based multitool around for bigger tasks (although no multi is a substitute for a dedicated tool). Enter the Swisstool Spirit.
Having owned multis from Leatherman and SOG, I feel confident in saying that the Spirit is the best medium sized multi currently out there. Vic has taken the Leatherman concept of a plier based tool and come close to perfecting it, in my opinion.
Each implement is easy to deploy and locks into place with a satisfying, solid "click." It is difficult to describe, but the Spirit feels like a multitool version of a Swiss watch. It is certainly the highest build quality I have encountered in a tool like this. One specific implement worth noting is the chisel/wirestripper tool. This implement is simply genius design. I hope Vic starts including this is some of their "normal" pocketknives. Additionally the Spirit has a very nice awl, which is often left off of other multis. Finally, the various screwdrivers have a reasonably long reach. I mention this in comparison to other tools, notably the Leatherman Wave in this medium sized tool class, that have gone to interchangeable bit drivers. While nice, they are very short and stubby which doesn't work well for me.
I do say almost perfect for a reason, though. There are a few things I think could be improved to make it absolutely perfect. The handles are a bit slippery when wet due to the high polish. If a version was offered in a matt finish, it would help. Additionally, it lacks any ruler markings on the handles, likely due to their curved shape. I have rectified this by keeping a stainless steel ruler in the sheath with the tool. Finally, the lack of any one-handed opening blades or tools can be a detriment to some. For my uses, it really isn't an issue but it would be nice if their were an option for those who need it.
Leatherman and SOG both make very fine tools, that would serve their owners for years, likely trouble-free. For me, however, Victorinox has raised the multitool bar with the precision and quality of the Swisstool Spirit. Add me to the list of "Swiss-huggers" when it comes to multitools!
Customer Review: A Perfectly Crafted Tool Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Recently, I had the chance to handle Leatherman's Charge TTi, which could be considered their premier model. Although it was definitely of high quality, its movement and feel was more clunky than expected. The Swiss Spirit, on the other hand, has a movement like no other - totally fluid and precise. As someone who has already handled several of Victorinox's Swiss Army Knives, I thought I couldn't be "wow'ed" anymore by their quality, but this tool exceeded my expectation. It's great for home repair, electrical work, and outdoor excursions.
A few notes on the design:
The locking tools are the highlight for me. Every tool locks into place when extended; the mechanism is easy to operate yet very effective.
The tool itself is fairly small and relatively lightweight yet solid. For such a small size, it embodies a good combination of functionality and versatility, and it fits my hand perfectly (average sized guy's hand).
It should be noted that the pliers move very freely and do not stick, spring back (into an open position), or hold their position. Some might count this as a negative, but I believe its functionality to be, nevertheless, unhindered and, perhaps, favorable.
The tools themselves cover a wide range of on-the-job necessities, that have already come in handy in numerous situations - I do some light carpentry and construction on occasion and regular yard work.
The carrying case is also a major plus. Although the tools are stainless steel, anyone who knows their steels can tell you that even stainless steels can rust when neglected. The case is made of a fairly thick brown leather with a velcro closure that should shelter the tools from the weather and general neglect. I personally love the look of it too - very classic/timeless styling.
All in all, I can't see how anyone could think they made a bad purchase on this item. I was on the fence for awhile, did a little research on the tool, debated about buying it some more, and eventually figured it wouldn't kill me if I got it... and I'm glad I did... and you will be too.
Customer Review: Amazing!!!!!!!! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I am very pleased with this. I have had this for over a year and it is just as good as it was when I got it. This is what I think of it:
1. Excellent quality, just as all the other tools they make. No lose
parts, no warps, and no defects.
2. Great duribillity. I have used it constanly and it is good as
new.
I even took this up with me when I went to Canada when I went
fishing with my Grandpa and his friends. I was concern about it
going over board so I tied a thin rope to it and the other end to
my swiss pocket knife, ( Yeah I am a swiss junky) I then looped
the middle of it slipped it over my belt. The total length of the
rope was about the length of my wingspan (probably a bit longer)
so it was long enough so that it wasn't so short but short enough
so that I didn't have worry about tripping.
And I did have to cut a anchor rope while it was over water so
there was a chance that it sink like a rock. Plus my hands were
freezing!
And absolutely no rust or scratches!!!
3. It has all the tools you need to survive!!! It really does, the
only thing that you could woory about is not having a normal blade
for wood working, but the serrations do not interfer with
widiling and you have the bit of a strait edge at the bottom
(where it won't get dull) for finishing tips on spears. Plus who
needs a pointed tip on there knife anyway???
Also about all funny extra tools on tools that don't make sins?
In my opinion they do that because it dose not drive up production
cost and in cuts down on wait removing excess weight where it
would been useful.
All in all I think this thing is perfect. Plus it has a great looking pouch. Long with a good looking tool!!!
If you like going hiking or anything outdoors. Get it!!!
