About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The forerunner of that name dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor or versatility.

I bought this combination although I was really only looking for the "tinker" to replace one that had mysteriously disappeared. While the "tinker" is still my favorite, primarily because of its small size, the classic has been a life saver several times already in the short time I've owned it. This is a great set of knives at a really good price. I have carried the classic (small one) for many years. I couldn't begin to tell you how many times it has come in handy at the office. The larger one I keep in the car for utility purposes. They are so handy I not only own them, I also give them as gifts and people always appreciate them. What's better than one Swiss Army Knife? Two Swiss Army Knives for a low price. The 11 tools on the Tinker model are NOT all duplicated on the Classic model, so they complement each other in function. One is even smaller than the other so you can bring one, the other, or both along, depending on what you might need "in the field". I remember having generic Swiss Army knives when I was a kid. Some were even bought in Switzerland...
The genuine Victorinox is worth the premium price but with the mini knife there isn't a premium price. The only thing missing is a cork screw...but the Phillips head screwdriver is more useful to many. The blade is wonderfully sharp and the quality seems solid.

For the busy technology professional, a good knife can be the single most used tool. The Victorinox Tinker is pretty close to perfect. It has the critical core screwdrivers -- flathead and Phillips -- as well as simple punch, pick, and tweezers. It is NOT a huge pocket-tearing monster. The biggest problem is not leaving this miniature workshop behind!
