Description of Victorinox Swiss Army Tinker and Classic Knife ComboThe Swiss Army Tinker and Swiss Army Classic SD by Victorinox are paired in this limited-edition gift set. The Classic is perfect for your key chain, while the Tinker is ideal for your garage or glove box, keeping you well prepared for whatever comes your way. Swiss Army's most popular knife, the Classic SD, is combined with the 91mm Tinker to create a great set of Swiss Army knives that is perfect for anyone. The Tinker offers six tools and 12 features including a large blade, small blade, Phillips screwdriver, can opener, small screwdriver for Phillips screws, bottle opener, large screwdriver, wire stripper, reamer, key ring, tweezers, and toothpick. The Classic SD measures just 2-1/4 inches long--less than a pack of gum--and comes equipped with a blade, nail file, screwdriver, scissors, key ring, tweezers, and toothpick. About Swiss Army Knives In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The forerunner of that name dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor or versatility.
Sports reviews of Victorinox Swiss Army Tinker and Classic Knife ComboCustomer Review: Great Value Package Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I ordered two of these: one for my desk and one for an Xmas gift for my brother-in-law. In-case you are wondering, it comes in one of those plastic clear packages designed to hang on store hooks (the ones that are impossible to open without a big pair of scissors or, well, a Swiss Army Knife). Sure, it is not a fancy gift box, but at roughly $17, it is a fantastic value.
The knives are as good quality as any other Victorinox knives I've had go. This is a great way to have the essentials at a low price. The build quality is great, but I did find that there was an excess of oil on the blades when opening the knife for the first time. Be sure to have a tissue handy.
The knives
-The Tinker - probably the most commonly used SAK in the world. This is just like the original Spartan, but has a Philips screwdriver instead of the corkscrew. It comes with the essentials - blade, smaller blade, bottle opener/wire stripper/flathead, reamer, screwdriver, and bottle opener. The reamer itsself has a farely sharp blade on it, and so does the can opener. To many, this knife will have all they need and then some on a package that is farely thin and light. I find that SAK's that are thicker than this (2 slots) can be unwieldy and heavy to carry around in the pocket from day to day.
-The Classic - Great little knife to keep in the bag, in the desk, by the couch, or just about anywhere. It is tiny, and has a good blade, a nail file with a small flathead end, and a pair of scissors. I've used these scissors just about my whole life to cut my nails, and they work fantastic.
These two knives make a great pair, and could be a good gift that will be treasured by the recipient for a long time to come. Not only will they last through many years of good use, but Victorinox backs them up with an awesome lifetime warranty. It is also a timeless classic, and who doesn't appreciate that?
Customer Review: another argument for screwcaps Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
In the search for maximum function/minimum mass, Tinker leads the list. Wenger and Victorinox each make a dizzying array of combinations, most of which are simply too much steel to lug around. (For fun, check out the Wenger Giant: Wenger The Giant Knife.) Wenger no longer makes an exact corollary to the Tinker, though the Classic 11, which used to be the Highlander, and the discontinued but still available Teton, are close and excellent. Here on Amazon we have only Victorinox, and that means Tinker. 2 blades is useful only if you have no sharpener, and bottle openers are nearly obsolete, but a Phillips screwdriver is essential, and a second size straight screwdriver makes the nibbler can opener bearable. (For a real can opener, look at a Wenger or GI knife.) Next most useful tool would be pliers, that's a Deluxe Tinker, but pliers makes this a tool you try to keep handy in your pack or glovebox, not your jeans pocket. The Phillips blade obviates a corkscrew, which is no great loss because if you're carrying a glass wine bottle you can also carry a corkscrew, or you can push the cork in. The better answer is to buy from bottlers who embrace the better stopper, the inevitable universal stopper, screwcaps, and leave cork oaks in peace.
If paper dolls are the extent of your agenda, slimmer knives like the little Classic will work. To build a raft and get off the island, a Tinker is the sufficient minimum. For an ideal combination of tools at less bulk, Victorinox makes a Wenger-sized Tinker that I think is close to perfect for everyday. Victorinox Swiss Army Knife
A purple version or Mogen David on blue instead of Swiss cross on red would have been sweet, but this combination is a terrific bargain and only comes in classic garb.

Okay.
You're not a ladies man. You don't need a corkscrew.
You're not an outdoorsman. You don't need a fish scaler.
You're not old. You won't need the magnifying glass for reading the newspaper.
You're not a rescue worker. You don't need a serrated blade for cutting seat belts.
You're not a real handy kind of guy. You don't need an assortment of screwdrivers, 1/4" bit adapter, wire cutter, file, or pliers like you would find on a full size multi tool.
You're not MacGuyver. You won't save the world with your Swiss Army Knife.
This little baby is perfect for the little girls, or IT tech types, in my life. They can keep the larger one in their purse, or pocket protecter, then attach the smaller one on their key chain. Those tweezers are perfect for plucking their eyebrows, or clipping onto their joints; and then they can call me, a real man with man's tools, to come along and jump start their cars, change their flats, change their light bulbs, open their jars, and spray WD-40 onto squeeky stuff.
All kidding aside. My niece loves her's. She simply does not need all of those other things that come with the other tools. This narrows it down to a few simple things that she will use. A small blade for opening mail. Little screwdrivers for battery doors. Everybody needs a bottle opener. She loves the large blade for cutting big sandwiches in half since she simply can't finish those giant deli combos. Her favorite part is the little scissors.
Customer Review: What's better than one Victorinox Swiss Army knife? Two! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
After I thoughtfully (okay reluctantly) donated my Victorinox Swiss Army Midnite Minichamp Pocket Knife to T.S.A. on my last trip out of town I needed to find a new knife.
Although the light/pen additions to my previous knife were nice, I decided I really wanted the toothpick/tweezer combo this time. Additionally the idea of receiving the second knife as a bonus was a great selling point to me, just in case I am forgetful again and have it confiscated at the airport.
All of the features on both of these knives are useful. The tools I find myself using over and over are the small blade (Great for opening Amazon boxes, just slice carefully!), the bottle opener (For that cool evening beverage on the deck) and the tweezers (For the slivers in my feet from walking barefoot). I've decided that the larger of the two knives will be the one I carry in my purse and the smaller will be my back-up.
I would have loved to not need a new knife, but at this price it wasn't a punishment to buy another. I am also now considering buying some extras to give as gifts.
Customer Review: My Third Tinker Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This is my third Tinker as I managed to lose two of them. I have a Wenger that is similar but has a serrated blade and a small pliers. I've had it replaced by Wenger twice but is also a good knife. What I miss is that the tinker has a bladed edge on the punch and that worked good for reeming the burrs off the inside edge of stainless steel tubing when someone at work had the correct tool without saying they got it. I miss this knife and needed to fill up the space for the free shipping. I paid $19 for each of my previous Tinkers. I even knew who found the first one I lost and asked for it back to no avail. So getting it engraved was a good suggestion. I used the can opener a lot more than you would think. Our kitchen can openers went out and it came in handy for that short period. The bottle opener is nice to have to, they didn't have twist off bottles in Mexico. You can abuse the knife pretty much and if it locks up both Victorinox and Wenger have replaced mine for just the price of shipping and no questions asked. So with free shipping and the extra knife, this is a bargain.
