About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

Sports reviews of Victorinox Swiss Army Soldier Pocket Knife (Silver Alox)

Customer Review: Great knife for backpacking
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

After owning one of these for over 20 years I recently lost it. I'm not hesitating to buy another one. Over the years my family/friends have used other knives and I've recieved other knives as gifts. This knife remained the best. It has the basic tools you need for camping, it doesn't weigh much, it's incredibly well built, it's easy to grasp, and it looks great. The best testimonial is whenever someone in my family had some serious work to do involving a knife and someone else offered their knife I'd always hear, "No, get me Daddy's knife."

Customer Review: awesome basic knife
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I've owned this knife (along with many other Swiss Army Knives) since I was a teenager.

I bought this one several years back because I wanted a basic knife. This one is great because the handle is not plastic. It won't crack if you drop it.

Now if require more tools, you won't be happy with this model. If you're at a party, you won't be able to uncork bottles with this.

Anyway, it's a great knive suitable for basic utility and everyday carrying needs. I highly recommend you add it to your collection.

Customer Review: well-made
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is a sleek, lightweight, no-frills knife that's affordable. I think the metal design looks better than the other SAK versions. Plus it's more durable as well. My #1 reason for getting this was portability. It's a thin, lightweight knife that fits easily into my pocket so I can carry it with me on picnics, camping trips, etc. without any hassle. The mix of tools on this one is good. One side of the awl is semi-sharpened so it can act as a back-up blade if necessary. Overall, it's a good tool and I highly recommend it.

Customer Review: The real classic - indispensable
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is a great pocket knife. It doesn't have any parts that can get lost, the blade holds an edge, I haven't found a screw yet that it won't turn. It's lightweight and indestructible. I've taken to ordering several at a time so I won't have to be without one when it is inevitably misplaced. Hopefully someone else finds the lost ones and keeps using them, because there's really no way for it to wear out. I spent about a month without mine recently and actually felt incomplete. It's a great product and you should buy it.

Customer Review: My favourite
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I purchased the first version off an Dutch soldier at a train station as they were loading their tanks onto trains after a military excersise in the '80s. It was always my favourite knife when growing up. I actually thought the knife was an 'Dutch army exclusive'. At some point I lost the knife.

When I saw the knife on Amazon I purchased a new version immediately. I love the this version of the simple Swiss army knife over the ones that have red plastic handle covers. More robust. And great utility.
