About Swiss Army Knives In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.
Sports reviews of Victorinox Swiss Army Soldier Pocket Knife (Silver Alox)Customer Review: Victorinox Swiss Army Soldier Pocket Knife (Silver Alox) Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I needed a small birthday gift for an Army veteran and the recipient was
quite pleased with it.
This is the best Swiss Army knife ever made. It is reported to be the sturdiest of all the knives, and has only the necessary tools. Perfect for daily use and as a gift to friends and family. It is reported to be the official army knife of Swiss soldiers and well proven.
I understand this model is in final production and there is a Limited Edition final production model which is somewhat more expensive. Amazon.com didn't have it but I did see it on other sites which I was unsure of the safety, etc.
Customer Review: Best knife I own. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought this to have a nice sharp blade for my camping cookset. I wanted something that was durable, sharp, with a thin blade. I needed a can opener too. This product met all my needs in a thin, durable package.
It soon found it's way into my pocket for daily use, the screwdrivers have adjusted gunsights, bikes, fish tank, tools, door handles, and still look new.
Can opener works well, takes a while, but it works. Great bottle opener too. Leather awl is great, puts holes in plastic easily, stays sharp. The blade is thin and sharp, cuts well. Just the right size.
I'm getting another!
Customer Review: Good rugged knife Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I like to carry a knife with me and usually have them as a key chain. I kept having to buy a new knife every few months because the sides kept coming off. Several knives later I found this one and realized that the body is built in one piece so I figured this would solve my problems. I've had this thing for almost two years and it is still in great condition. It's a bit bulky as a key chain but not too bad considering you are carrying a decent size blade.
I don't foresee buying another pocket knike anytime soon because mine is still in great shape, but when the day comes I will buy this one again
Customer Review: Superb, No Nonsense Knife. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
1. The blade on this knife is about 40% thicker than standard SAK's.
2. Feels sturdier in the hand. I have a Climber II as well, and this knife really feels tougher.
3. Simple design, all the tools you really need.
4. 2 deck knife. Feels indestructible. You know this knife won't let you now.
5. Look's cooler and feels cooler, knowing that this knife is actually used by the Swiss army. So you know, there is a lot of thought and quality put into this knife.
6. Design may end soon, as Victorinox is going to change the design. What a waste!
Customer Review: Great gentlemen's folder Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I got tired of some of the looks I got when pulling out my Spyderco or Benchmade knives. Even my SOG Twitch II would have people look at me differently. I needed a knife for those occasions and places where pulling a knife out would be in bad taste. This knife is perfect. Everyone, familiar with knives or not, is familiar with Swiss Army knives. This version in aluminum instead of red is elegant enough to carry in my suit and the blade shape is very unthreatening. It not being a lock blade, I am able to carry it in my pocket in Los Angeles instead of having to clip it plain view.
