About Swiss Army Knives In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The forerunner of that name dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor or versatility.
Sports reviews of Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger Pocket KnifeCustomer Review: Extremely useful survival and work tool Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Strong steel, holds an edge, exceptionally versatile, and not too small so as to get lost in the wash.
The Ranger is a great buy, the only drawback (and i hate even mentioning it) is the nail file is subpar. My other Victorinox has a great nail file on it. Oh well, i usually just use the scissors to cut my nails anywhow. The workmanship is awesome, and if you use the tools from a generic brand and compare that to a Victorinox, you really see that Victorinox is a cut above. I've used this knife everyday since i got it, and i can't imagine how i would live without it now!
Customer Review: ON MY THIRD AND WOULD BUY ANOTHER IN A SECOND Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
it the the best of all the swiss army knives i have ever seen
i have used every single tool on the knife multiple times
it has all of the tools i would want and only one tool that i wouldn't want. all the others have either too many or too few tools
the only problem i have with the tool is that i can find absolutely no use for the hook and that all it does is take up space. but i don't really care about the hook and it is not much added weight
if you are going to but a multipurpose tool for everyday use then this is where your search will end!
Customer Review: Still in perfect condition Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought this particular knife in Switzerland a bit over a decade ago. I have used it extensively since then, both in everyday tinking and in wilderness activities. It has held up to everything I could throw at it. All it has needed was a bit of oil once to keep things swinging opening easily.
My one very minor dislike is that it has a wine corkscrew instead of a Phillips-head screwdriver. It makes no difference out in the wilderness, but costs me a few extra seconds for repairs around the house because I have to find where I last left the Phillips screwdriver.
Customer Review: Great Product Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I worked as a maintenance man at a local camp this summer and this pocketknife was invaluable. I haven't had to use all of the tools on this, but the long knife, corkscrew, scissor, woodsaw, and screwdriver were great. The only problem I've had is that through the course of the summer, the blades have gotten a bit dirty and its kind of tricky to clean them. Not tricky enough to cause a real problem, but just enough so that when you have to do this, you say, "don't hurt yourself."
Otherwise, Victorinox provides a lifetime warranty, so what could be better?
Customer Review: Got dude gift? The dudes abide! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
My family consist of many guys, and my Christmas travel entails many airport metal detectors. So when this knife went on a Goldbox Lightening Deal a couple years ago, I had them delivered directly to my Mom's where I later wrapped them individually. It certainly was like Christmas in the "atta gal!" and high 5's from the guys opening these gizmos; you certainly can't lose. :] Even if they have something similar, a "spare" will always be appreciated. Just get enough to go around, or there could be hurt feelings!
