About Swiss Army Knives In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The forerunner of that name dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor or versatility.
Sports reviews of Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger Pocket KnifeCustomer Review: Very useful tool Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This item is great when you need a particular tool but don't want to search your house for it. Slicing open a package, opening a soda, cutting open a plastic retail package, screwing in a power supply: all in one convenient item. The Swiss Army Knife has a very convenient size: not so small that it becomes less useful, and not so large that it becomes a burden to carry.
The only negative: I sometimes have difficulty opening the implements with my nails. The tools don't feel stiff, but the spring mechanism is a bit strong. The knife I bought is still relatively new, though. Maybe it's just me. Instead, I use the included tweezers when this happens.
I don't think this item could be used for violent or antisocial activities. While the included 3-inch knife blade is useful for opening boxes and other things around the house, let's just say...I wouldn't trust myself and the aforementioned knife in a fight with a bear.
Customer Review: Best of the Victorinox Line! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I have always wanted a Swiss Army Knife, probably because I watched too much Macgyver. I ordered the Swiss Champ from Amazon (Which has the best bargain anywhere!) and forgot how big it was. When I got it I was kind of overwhelmed and knew it wouldn't be carried around in my pocket all the time. It is definitely more of a Multi Tool than a pocket Knife. So I looked around and it was a choice between the Ranger and the Craftsman. They are basically the same except that the Ranger has a corkscrew and the Craftsman has a Philips Head screwdriver instead plus the pliers. I really didn't find it necessary to have a set of pliers plus, most Philips head screws can easily be screwed in by a flat head anyway. The pliers would have added a few more millimeters and might have made the knife feel too wide. The Ranger is a great all around tool and not too big for my average sized hands.
Customer Review: I love the file! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
The Victorinox Ranger has a really good range of tools that make it a great knife to take camping. I love the 2 blades, scissors, can opener, bottle opener/screwdriver/pry tool, wood saw, etc. But this one has a really good file, which most other models don't have - not just a fingernail file like on my alox Cadet, but a proper wood/metal/plastic file! One edge can also be used as a metal saw. Basically, I bought this particular SAK because it has the common great tools + a file. I also considered buying a Victorinox Handyman which appears to be identical except it has pliers as well, but then the SAK would be thicker & heavier so I decided that the Ranger was the one that had the right features!
When you want to grind a notch in wood or plastic or grind a little material off to make something fit then a file is just so useful!
Customer Review: Solid and Practical, A Great Value! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
The "Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger Pocket Knife" is one of the handiest tools I own. The 3 1/2" size is just right for slipping into my pocket when going hiking or puttering around my house working on my "Honey do" list.
The tools are surprising useful, especially the VERY SHARP knife, the practical scissors, the little sharp wood saw, and the great leather awl. The corkscrew also saved a "date night" with my wife when we inadvertently bought a bottle of wine with an actual cork :-) The only missing tool is a philips head screwdriver, but I knew that before ordering. This knife is like a portable tool box in your pocket and the solid construction will make it last for years!
Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Best non-locking swiss Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
As a carpenter I am constantly needing a metal-file, wood-saw for tight spaces and a small pry-bar for paint lids and scraping. This is the best non-locking swiss for a few reasons: The useless extras were omitted from this knife i.e. fish scaler, nail file, tampon rack. This makes the knife more usefull, and, compact enough to carry in your jeans. As far as lock-blade swiss go: If you are working with the knife your best bet is the swiss locksmith. If you just need a blade - get the one-hand trecker. I personally like to have a metal-file so I go with the One- hand master, it is just like the swiss military knife butt the wood-saw is replaced with the file.
