About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The forerunner of that name dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor or versatility.

Sports reviews of Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger Pocket Knife

Customer Review: Still top notch
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is my 4th Victorinox Swiss army Knife in the last 15 years, each with slightly different options, and I am as impressed now as I was back when i got my first one.

The knife is well made and sturdy. You know the list of tools for this model, they are all there and all work as they should. 10 years ago when I got a similar one a friend of mine took out the tooth pick and tweezers and said "Well, you're going to loose these so I might as well loose them for you now." 10 years later they are still in the knife and as good as they were back then. I have no reason to believe this will be any different as they are both in there solidly. The blades are sharp, the file is great and the teeth on the saw are perfect.

The only slight criticism I have is that because of the number of tools in this knife, some of them are a little tricky to pull out. Also, most of the tools have a little grease still on them. Neither of these factors are a big deal to me, the grease can be wiped off easily and the tools may only take an extra few seconds to pull out. However, if you have larger fingers, very short nails, poor eyesight or generally aren't good with small things then puling the tools may become more of an issue.

Customer Review: Great Knife even better price
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

was a great holiday deal for this knife and was the holiday price that hit the mark. it fits into your hand very nicely and has a good range of tools. probably the two most important are the blade and scissors which are decently sized. it also has useful tweezers, because you always find yourself in some situation where tweezers could be used.

the only problems with this type of knife is that you need some fingernails to get to almost all of the tools, and you cant really have it in your pocket all of the time because of its size. if you have your fingernails short its alot harder and sometimes painful to get tools out. i tend to leave this in the car.

leathermans are a great alternative to swiss army knives. thier main function tools are a snap to get out, especially on the wave which is one of the best knives i own, and they have great small knives like the squirt which i carry with me on my keys all of the time. thier build quality is also very good.

this knife would make a great gift for anyone and everyone should have atleast had one swiss army knife in thier lives growing up, if not get one now.

Customer Review: Victorinox's BEST knife!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

IMHO The Ranger model is the PERFECT pocket knife for anybody who wants to give, or receive the best knife Victorinox produces.

I've had several SAK's before I got the Ranger, but I always felt that they just didn't have all that I needed (or were too big!). I got my first Ranger when I was stationed overseas, and over the last 22 years, I've had several of them. The longest was for 8 years (got stolen), and a couple have been lost.

I use this knife nearly daily, and wouldn't be fully dressed without it. I regularly use every tool it has. Especially the saws!!! (Yeah, both of them) Despite everything that I do with them, I've never been unhappy with how they hold up. When I actually did manage to snap a saw off (my fault), Victorinox quickly fixed it.

If it was any smaller, I couldn't do all the things that I do. Any larger, and I'd have a hard time carrying it.

I will NEVER buy any other version of Swiss Army Knife, and I'd recommend that you think about getting two (in case you misplace one).

Customer Review: used the saw tool - very sturdy
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I had to buy a couple of new Swiss army knives because I keep forgetting to remove my old ones from my backpack (took my hiking pack as carryon onto the plane) and I've gotten them confiscated by airport security. I'll bet they have a huge pile of SAKs!

Before I ordered the new ones, I had wondered if these knives had gotten flimsy over the years compared to my beloved old ones but they are still the good quality they used to be. On a recent trip (this time, I checked in my suitcase), I had to use the saw to shorten a very thick, heavyweight cardboard tube so it would fit into my suitcase. It worked great - very sharp edges and the blade was sturdy - no bending or flexing at all.

I also own the Deluxe Tinker and the pliers have excellent grip. Victorinox still makes great stuff. I did note the scratches on the red plastic covering on the SAKs I ordered through Amazon. I'm suspecting the lower prices here are due to inventory seconds - scratched/blemished items. I don't mind as long as the tools all work.

Customer Review: Great, with only one little problem
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I have owned many knives and many Victorinox knives. This is one of the best I have owned. It has one slight problem -- the blade which is a file is sharp on the edge, sharp enough that over time it may cut a hole in a pocket. I guess I will discover that in time!

On the top, this knife has a small blade, a large blade, a file, a wood saw, a scissors, a combination large blade screwdriver with a bottle opener, and a can opener with a small blade screwdriver (which works well for most phillips screws).

On the flip side is a cork screw, a chisel, a dedicated small screw blade screw driver, a hook (supposidely to carry packages), and an awl.

It has a small split ring so it can be attached to a chain and near that is a toothpick and a small tweezers. All is stainless steel with a red plastic cover bearing the Swiss Army Knife logo.

It measures 7/8" wide, 1" high and 3 1/2" long.

At this price, this is a marvelous buy!
