About Swiss Army Knives In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The forerunner of that name dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor or versatility.
Sports reviews of Victorinox Swiss Army One-Hand Trekker Lockblade Pocket Knife (Black)Customer Review: Big but handy Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
The images don't necessarily obscure the knife's size, but it was a little larger than I was expecting. Still, it fits in my pockets just fine and its heft and finish keep it from sliding out when I sit down. The blade itself is sharp, and though I didn't know if I was a fan of the serration, I can't think of any time it's gotten in the way or prevented me from cutting something. The locking flathead screwdriver is a blessing for my thumb's knuckle. The only real complaint I have is that the leather punch is really difficult to get out (not to be attempted by flimsy fingernails!). It's a really handy tool that I use every day.
Customer Review: great knife Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
i really like this knife.it has a semiserrated blade with a liner lock (the liner lock is easier to use with the left hand). the only thing i don't like is that the blade edge is only ground on one side. so it will be harder to sharpen. after sharpening a few times it will loose it's serrations. if you want this knife and you don't need a saw you should get the Victorinox Swiss Army Adventurer . the adventurer is the same size and has a side lock and is cheaper . i have both and like the adventurer a little better because the side lock is easier for me to use plus its lighter and thinner because it doesn't have a saw.
Customer Review: Swiss Made in China? Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I just purchased this item and I have not found anywhere on the package or on the knive itself that the product is Swiss Made.
Is this product made in China? I sent an e-mail to Victorinox to enquire about where are these knives made, but never got an answer back. So I think these "Swiss knives" are actually "Chinese knives". Still great quality but Chinese quality.
China makes great products, so there is no reason to hide the country of origin of these knives. "Made in China" today means good quality at good price. Let's give to the chinese workers the good credit for the quality of these "Swiss knives".
Customer Review: another classic from Victorinox Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This knife is slightly bigger, bulkier and heavier than the usual Swiss Army knife. That's an observation, not a complaint. The lockblade feature is well worth the insignificant inconvenience. Just get a nylon holder and clip it to your belt if that's an issue for you. The knife itself is fantastic - another precision instrument from Victorinox. The big blade is easily opened with one hand, and with a little practice can likewise be closed with one hand. JUST BE VERY CAREFUL!!! This blade is SHARP!!! The extras make this an extremely portable toolkit, useful for many tasks at home or work. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: It's the best knife I've ever owned. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Christmas 2005 I bought two of these from Amazon: One for myself and one for my best friend. We both still carry them and they are holding up just fine. I don't know that a day goes by that I don't carry this except when I fly, and then I just feel naked without it in my pocket.
The blade locks, which is obvious from the name, but the flat head screwdriver locks and is a great pry tool at that point. In 5 years I've not had a reason to use the saw blade, but everything else has been used to good effect. For general utility it has been the best pocket utility knife I have ever owned.
