About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

Love the Swiss Army knife I just bought. Used to have a very small one, why? It is like a car, more power, more better. If you need scisors now and again, small screw driving and belive it or not the awl/needle has been used several times.The quality is there, along with what we all need, a toothpick. Someone had stolen the Swiss Army knife I had carried everywhere with me for almost 40 years. It had made it through TSA on numerous occassions - even mailed it back to myself once when I forgot to take it out of my purse. Bought it to replace the last one lost to airport security. People can still sneak across the border but thank G-d they can't fly in with a Swiss Army Knife.
Now that the political diatribe is over, I'll put away my soap box and simply say that you just don't replace an old friend with an imitation.

I bought this as a gift for a 14 year old boy. After I gave it to him I made sure to tell him not to take it to school. What a shame. I've owned a similar Swiss Army nife for over 20 years and I always carry it with me. It's an extremely useful tool that comes in handy when you least expect it.
