About Swiss Army Knives In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.
Sports reviews of Victorinox Swiss Army Deluxe Tinker, RedCustomer Review: no pocket should be without it Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I have been using this knife for ten solid years now and my only regret is when I forget to bring it with me. I often refer to the Victorinox S.A. Deluxe Tinker as my third hand(as do other reviewers) and it is treated as such. I have used every tool on this knife and they all have withstood quite a bit of abuse, -and still work perfectly. I do not need to remind owners of this knife about often you hear the phrase, "hey can I borrow your knife?" and they are soon envious that they do not own one.
The medium size of this knife is very satisfying and its has a little weight to it so you won't forget it is in your pocket. For me every tool is an asset, even the boot lace puller -especially for a snowboarder who towards the end of the day has cold fingers and loose boots!!!
The only thing it lacks now is, the toothpick it came with, but that is replaceable. Also, I have filed down the mini screwdriver on the can opener blade to right angles and a slimmer profile to make it more useful for tiny screws like on eyeglass frames.
This knife is well worth every penny.
Customer Review: The best of the breed Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Of all the SAK's out there, the Deluxe Tinker is my favorite. It's small enough to comfortably stay in your pocket (instead of those side pouches many of the larger models require), and every single tool in the collection is useable. While I own eight different Swiss Army Knives, this is the one I constantly grab when it's time to go. The only problem I had with it is the scissors. The small metal piece that pushes the blades apart got twisted once when I let someone borrow my knife (never again) and I could never get it to work right after that. I recently purchased my second to let my first retire after several long years of rugged use. If not for the scissors getting messed up, I'd still be using it today. After years of daily use, it's still good. The blades have had to be sharpened and there are a few chips out of the red cover, but I have no complaints with the quality. It holds up to hard usage.
If you're looking for a knife that is durable and useful, Swiss Army is the way to go. Any of their knives are good.
Customer Review: Yep, you need a Deluxe Tinker for City life, too! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I got the Deluxe Tinker and the "large" leather case (pass on it) from my stepdaughter for Christmas. I get stuck keeping everything fixed at the house, so it was a sweet gift. Frankly, I didn't think a City Guy would need such a comprehensive utility tool, but the girl knows me. I put an aluminum carabiner on and wore the SAK on my jeans for a week to make her feel good. Well, you know the story by now...I used the Phillips head to fix a loose part on my desk chair, I used the toothpick to reset a clock, cut out a UPC with the main blade (sharp!!), clipped price tags off with the scissors, dug out a drawstring from a washed hoodie with the boot lacer, opened a watch back with the short blade, even popped a Yuengling's in the basement...I have never had happier fingers or nails. You won't miss the corkscrew guys. OK, except the airport; the TSA guys think nail clippers are weapons, too. (Land this plane in Beirut, or I'll cut your hangnails halfway!!) Cheers.
Customer Review: 99.999% efficient! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I'm very impressed with this little SAK. In fact, of all its tools, only the strange little hook puzzles me and seems to have no real purpose. Perhaps it can be replaced by a file, or magnifying glass or something (ARE YOU LISTENING,VICTORINOX?). Otherwise, the Deluxe Tinker is the perfect tool, so it's design is ALMOST 100% efficient. I have never been able to find a tool that, as small as the Tinker is, has both scissors and pliers, as well as the multitude of other attachments. The best thing about it is the fact that it goes right on your keychain. Let's be honest....we've left the house without our wallets, our shades, and even our cellphones, but what's the one thing we instinctively reach for before stepping out? Our keys. If this SAK is with your keys, it's sure to be handy when needed. Just make sure you take it off of your key ring before you fly. The TSA isn't known for their common sense approach to these things.
Customer Review: A true classic Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Not much more to say than you get what you pay for. There are many cheaper versions of this knife that I have accumulated over the years from bank give aways etc. All of them have fatal flaws. The tinker has none of that. It is a solid perfomer for everything. I've used it camping and the can opener and knife are really useful. I've used it in the office where the knife and screwdfivers are useful. I still have yet to use the hook, but I am sure that is coming.
The only flaw I see to these knives are the toothpick and tweezers. The toothpick I will never use on my teeth though it is great for resetting electronics. The tweezers in past swiss army models I've owned has become stuck, but this one still works well.
Overall, you can't beat a classic and I own three versions of the swiss army knifes and alternate them with my leatherman wave to use for miscellaneous tasks.
