About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The forerunner of that name dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor or versatility.

Sports reviews of Victorinox Swiss Army Climber II Pocket Knife

Customer Review: Just the Basics
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I had to order this to replace the identical knife that I have owned for 7 years: airport security had to confiscate and destroy it when I accidentally left it in my laptop bag.

The Climber II knife is the knife I carry with me every day: even in the office, it always comes in handy. The can opener has a knack for staying sharp, the scissors often trim stray threads, and the long blade is just the thing for peeling a piece of fruit at lunch. I've also used the leather punch to add holes to my belt (thank you, regular exercise!), the corkscrew easily opens a wine bottle, and the bottle opener and screwdrivers get regular use. What's impressed me the most is the durability of the Victorinox steel: I've put all sorts of stress and leverage on the parts and have yet to break one, even prying loose the lid of an old stuck paint can.

Some quick tips for you:

1) Periodically clean out your knife: carefully open all parts, blow dust out, clean pocket lint, etc. Check the screw holding the scissors and tighen it.

2) Oil the knife: if it starts to get hard to pull out the parts, a drop of 3-in-1 oil at each end and in the middle (for the leather punch/hook handle) works wonders. Let the oil soak in, wipe up the excess, and don't put it back into your pocket until you've had a chance to work the parts back and forth a few times (to get the oil into the hinges) and then let it sit out on a cloth to pick up leftover leakage.

3) Sharpen with care: you should seldom have to sharpen the can opener, but the rest will need periodic sharpening. Think carefully about which angle you apply the whetstone to the scissors: you don't want to have the scissor blades abraded further apart from each other.

Do these things a couple of times a year and this knife will last you forever.

Customer Review: Just like Grandpa's
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

My husband received a Swiss Army knife from our son one Christmas, many years ago. He always carried it with him...always. He was always the first one to help out someone when they needed something opened etc...
Our oldest grandson was fascinated with Grandpa's knife...he always knew that grandpa would be able to help him open whatever needed to be opened, especially the tape and string on new toys. When Grandpa passed away, he wanted Grandpa's knife, but I said no, that it was mine. He joined the cubscouts and I told him that when he was old enough he would get his very own....this past Christmas was the perfect time for him to get it. I tried looking locally for one, but no success. I ordered on line and was very pleased that it was just like Grandpa's and my grandson was very pleased. He helped us open our packages this Christmas, just like Grandpa...

Customer Review: What more could you want
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Two of these Swiss Army Climber II knives were purchased - 1 for my 14 year old daughter and 1 for my 16 year old son. We go camping, hiking, fishing, backpacking and hunting, and I wanted my kids to have a reliable pocket knife to take with them. During the spring and summer we go out on the river fishing and camping, during the winter we are in the woods hunting. Regardless of what we were doing, or where we were at, I wanted my kids to have a reliable knife.

The knife had to be compact, good quality and from a reputable brand name. The Climber II fits that bill perfectly. Its small enough to fit in a pants pocket, while the blades are long enough for everyday use.

The Climber II is just what you might expect from Victorinox, you get a quality product and at a price that will not break the bank.

Customer Review: The right tool set for me
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

The Victorinox Climber is a superb tool to carry with you at all times. Scissors, corkscrew, awl, caplifter, and screwdrivers will get used every week, and at least one every day. Small enough to take every place (except the airport), and sturdy enough to rely upon.

Oh yeah, it has a knife blade that will work passably well for a pocketknife's two main functions: food preparation and opening mail (Big blade for making sandwiches, and a small blade so you don't scare the poor little hoplophobes when you open letters).

All this a price that encourages you to use it rather than protect it from use.

Customer Review: almost the same as the Swiss Army Climber
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This Climber II pocket knife is exactly the same length and thickness as the Climber. The only difference is the Climber has a Philip screw driver and the Climber II as a cork screw. The Climber is glossy red while the Climber II is flat dark red. You can get the Climber II for less.
Both are 9cm in length, 16mm thick and 20mm wide.
I couldn't decide which one to buy so I bought both so now you know.
Both knives are built really well and last a life time unless you lose it like I did.
It's not too big and not too small, it's just right.
It weighs a lot less than a leathermen.
