Customer Review: A fantastic LITTLE knife

The Victorinox "Classic" is a great LITTLE knife. I've purchased several of them over the years, both for myself and for others, and loved them all. The handle/body holds up well for years, the cutting blade stays sharp and rust free and the tools (mini-scissor, nail file/screwdriver, toothpick, and tweezer) all perform their assigned tasks very well. But I see by reading other reviews here on Amazon that some folks are probably being mislead by this product's name, "Classic". Perhaps the word "classic" suggests to some folks a larger sized, heavier duty pocket knife (like the Victorinox Climber, Tinker or Ranger). The Classic is a very small knife (only 2.25 inches long), designed to be attached to key rings or kept in a pocket or purse for daily use on light duty tasks, like personal grooming, cutting open small packages, opening letters, etc. The Ranger, Tinker and Climber knives by Victorinox are each around 3.5 inches long (check Amazon product details for exact length) and if that's the sort of size range you're expecting for the Classic, you'd be mistaken. I have a owned a range of Victorinox knives and tools, and the Classic is by far the smallest. I like keeping a Classic on my keys for daily personal light duty use and for those moments when you need a knife but the only "tool kit" you have with you is your key ring. For the intended range of light duty tasks, the Classic is a wonderful, dependable, well designed knife. For heavier duty tasks, look into their larger knives or "Swisstools". I can recommend all of them heartily as high quality, well designed tools.
My only bit of negative feedback to the folks at Victorinox is not related to usability but appearance. The surface finish on their plastic body knives (opaque and transparent) seems very susceptible to scratching. Their all metal "Swisstool" looks great after years of use, and I've never had one of the plastic knife bodies crack or split or fail on me, but the plastic knife bodies sure pick up scratches (especially when kept with keys), which detract from the original smooth, glossy finish of the knives. Finding a material that doesn't scratch as easily would make these knives simply perfect.

About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.
