Sports reviews of Tubbs Snowshoes Men's Flex TRK Snowshoes, 24 -inchCustomer Review: Tubbs Flex Snowshoes Great On Crusty Snow & Ice Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
This is my first winter to use snowshoes and so far I am loving it. One thing I noticed was that the snowshoes tend to make walking on rough snow full of boot prints much easier. Since the snowshoes are at least twice the length & width of the boot holes, it tends to level things out. Since you can then simply walk without constantly picking your footsteps, your head is up and your back is straighter.
Recently we went through a bout of rain and thaw followed by a flash freeze. The result was very rough icy pathways full of frozen in boot prints. Off the walking paths the snow was also very hard and crusty as well as having frozen in boot prints. I have ice cleats, which are great for walking on ice but the real problem was the roughness of the surface. I started to think of ways to make a sort of snowshoe designed specifically for walking on such rough icy paths when I happened upon the videos for the Tubbs Flex series of snowshoes.
I found the Men's and women's Flex Trk snow shoes on sale at a local outdoor sports shop and picked up a pair for myself and my wife. The cost of materials to make something would have been at least half the sale price of the Tubbs Flex Trk snowshoes and I would be spending precious exercise time making snowshoes instead of using them.
The Flex Trk snowshoes are fantastic on ice. We were able to try them on some gentle icy slopes and some steeper crusty icy snow covered slopes. The traction was great. Most importantly we could walk with our heads up not needing to pick each footstep. We walked for about 2 hours without the usual back pain from walking on such rough icy pathways.
The only drawback and the reason why I only gave these snowshoes 4 stars, was the noise. It was so loud we had to stop walking to talk to each other. The plastic deck of the snowshoe acts like a sounding board. I have come up with some ideas to reduce the noise. If these modifications work I will post them.
An alternative to these snowshoes that might work just as well but not make so much noise are the MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoes.
Description of Tubbs Snowshoes Men's Flex TRK Snowshoes, 24 -inchFor new snowshoers and those looking for more comfort on their snowshoe excursions, the FLEX TRK offers the perfect opportunity for value-conscious buyers to have all the technical advancements found in the FLEX Series at an affordable price. With FLEX Tail, Traction Rails, gender-specific Compact Design and the new QuickFLEX binding, the FLEX TRK has it all. Tubbs understands that better biomechanics and ergonomics are just as important to the beginning snowshoer, which is why we created the FLEX TRK. The Men's Flex TRK Snowshoes for men are designed to provide greater comfort for beginning and recreational snowshoers at an affordable price. The Flex TRK offers value-conscious buyers all the technical advancements found in the Tubbs Flex Series--at an entry-level price. The snowshoes feature the FLEX Tail, Rotating Toe Cord--Rotation Limiter, Traction Rails, and gender-specific QuickFLEX Bindings. The snowshoes come in a compact, 24-inch design.
The gender-specific QuickFLEX binding is designed to keep your foot secure and centered for hours of hiking. | Key Features: - Flex Tail: The ergonomically and bio-mechanically designed FLEX Tail is designed to absorb shock from heel strike--this should reduce the amount of stress on your joints and allowing you to snowshoe farther, longer, and with less stress on your body.
- Rotating Toe Cord--Rotation Limiter: The Rotating Toe Cord design enables the tail of the snowshoe to drop and snow to shed off the tail, reducing cardio-respiratory strain by 7 percent. The underfoot pivot point also allows the toe traction teeth to bite deeply into the snow when weighted. A rotation limiter prevents over-rotation and shin bang.
- QuickFLEX Binding: The molded, asymmetric QuickFLEX binding is gender specific with patented Control Wings to center the boot. A dual pull strap system secures the fit while a cinch pull strap makes entry and exit easier. A heel strap pulls tight against the boots rand, to center and secure the boot in position.
- Traction Rails: The shoe features a carbon steel toe crampon, ergonomically placed under foot, to maximize weighted traction and responsiveness. Meanwhile 3D curved Traction Rails provide side-hill grip in hard or icy conditions. Progressive molded Snow Brakes, on the deck as well as on the Soft Strike zone, are designed to improve weighted traction.
- Torsion Deck: Tubbs' advanced Torsion Deck design is built to adapt to variable snow conditions underfoot. The Torsion Decks allows for torsional articulation throughout the body of the snowshoe--to enhance traction, biomechanics, and comfort on uneven terrain.
Size Specifications: - Dimensions: 8 by 24 inches
- Weight per pair: 3.6 pounds
- Surface area: 165 cubic inches
- Weight capacity: in packed or variable snow conditions the FLEX snowshoes are appropriate for all weights. In powder snow conditions the men's models are best at weights up to 190 pounds.
