I recently purchased a Trek 1.1 road bike and found out from other riders that it is very critical to check air pressure (110 PSI on my Trek 700 series tire or as recommended on side wall of tire being inflated) daily as otherwise this could result in a "pinch" puncture of the tube, premature failure, etc. I ordered the Topeak JoeBlow Sport floor bike pump and was amazed that the seller shipped this product to me over night and it was in my hands the following day!
Although initially flustered figuring out how to properly use the Topeak JoeBlow sport pump (no instructions came with pump) with "presta valves," I Googled in the necessary information and it was a breeze from there. Having said this, there are a few tips that should make this task easy, and you will be on your way to accurate air pressure and safe cycling. So listen up!
1. Rotate the tire until the presta valve is in the 6 o'clock position (vertical position) or nearest the ground.
2. Unscrew the tiny nut on top of the Presta valve (and place it in a secure location!).
3. Depress the needle with your finger to open the valve and allow a small amount of air to escape. Doing this seats the valve and prepares it for inflation.
4. Make sure that the locking mechanism on pump is parallel to air line (JoeBlow pump) prior to placing the pump head on presta valve. Slide the pump head over the valve stem, push down firmly to seat the pump head onto presta valve, flip pump head lever up (vertical position), and begin pumping. You should see air pressure registering on the pump gauge as this indicates a correct or accurate seat on presta valve and will allow inflation of tire.
5. Pump up and down on the pump shaft handle until the desired tire pressure is reached. Release (unlock) the pump head lever and pull the pump head off of the valve stem (you will hear some air escape during this procedure, but this is air in the pump line and is normal when releasing the locking mechanism).
6. Screw down the stop nut onto presta valve and re-install the cap on the valve. Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the other tire if needed.
7. Check the tension of the valve mounting screw on the lower portion of the valve stem to make sure that it is good and tight.
Happy trails to all, wear your helmet when biking and pay attention to drivers (establish eye contact) and never take anything for granted as there are too many distractions when riding and from those driving!
