My first bike tool was a simple 8-piece version I picked up at the bike shop. But NOW I have the Topeak Alien II 26-function bicycle tool! Wow! It is compact, great quality and as its title implies has MANY functions. It's almost like having a swiss army knife AND a bike tool all in one.
PROs: compact, fantastic quality materials, well designed, adjustable tension on the tools for easier handling
CONs: need a hex wrench to tighten or adjust your Topeak tools tension
But where other tools are not adjustable at all-- this one is.
Now that I've gotten better at bike adjustments and repairs (purchased a book) this tool is FANTASTIC!
PS: I tend to look for items that are compact as I live in a small space.

While I'm far from an experienced bike mechanic, this tool has just about everything you would need should you have a breakdown on the road. You can also use it at home, although given the dimensions of some of the individual tools (a necessary evil, given that this is a compact tool set), you'd probably want use your own tools first, and use this to fill in where you might be lacking. But it is very tempting to use this tool as much as possible because just about everything you need is in the palm of your hand, rather than scattered across your workshop. I was impressed at the overall quality and sturdiness of the tool as well as its (relative) light weight. It's definitely found a home in my saddle bag!Customer Review: Handy Handtools

This a great accessory kit for any bike. It's impractical to carry a tool box when you are out riding, and this little kit seems to be the perfect answer. It has most of the tools you might need for a quick roadside repair or adjustment to your bike. I agree with other reviewers that this kit IS the "Swiss Army bike tool kit". It seems to be well built and durable. FYI: if you are a person like me, some of the tools may not be familiar to you; keep the enclosed packaging material and description at your disposal for future use. My Dad used to tell me "even the greatest tools in the world are almost useless if they are used inappropriately or incorrectly". This kit is well worth the money. I have yet to use this tool for anything except minor adjustments, but I'm confident I'll have the tool I need when a road fix eventually comes up (for me or another rider). As other reviewers have noted, this is a comparatively heavy tool, but unless you're really concerned with the weight of every accessory, it's not a problem. I keep this in its case in my Avenir Bigmouth Velcro Seat Bag (Large- 73/106 Cubic Inches) along with a CO2 inflator, three cartridges, headlight, tailight, tire levers, patch kit, and more. Amazon's price is far less than you'll find at a local bike shop for this one.Customer Review: Awesome!

This has everything you could possibly need for a bike-tool. Perfect for tune-ups, adjustments, repairs, whatever! I even put a bike together out of the box with this (though I would recommend an actual pedal-wrench for an easier time getting it to the right torque.) I use it on my road bike and mountain bike, and absolutely love it. It is built solid, stainless steel, hard case. The tool also slides apart into 2 pieces to make it easier to work with. Some reviewers have complained about its size, but I disagree, I do not find it cumbersome at all. Then again, I didn't race in the Tour de France as some of the other reviewers seem to have.
Get this multi-tool!
