Sports reviews of Timex T5J031 Unisex Digital Fitness Heart Rate Monitor Watch

Customer Review: Very good HRM
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I am a 69-year old male with some medical issues. I am attentive to fitness and work out for two hours 4 or 5 times a week. I was not happy with the erratic pulse readings on the LifeFitness machines at my gym and started to look for a wearable heart rate monitor (HRM). After research, I narrowed it down to the Timex T5J031 Unisex Digital HRM and a much more expensive Polar RS 100. The Polar was my first choice (its sending unit works directly with the LifeFitness stationary bicycles at my gym) but for my purposes it cost more than I could justify for what I needed. Price and reputation of the Timex company drove me to the Timex. I read the reviews - particularly the negative reviews - and it was hard to reconcile the highly favorable reviews with the very negative ones. I decided to take a chance with the Timex TfJ031. I have been using it for a couple of weeks and it has worked flawlessly. I like that I can have the time of day running while the HRM is active and showing my pulse rate. I found that locating the sender strap just below the nipples is very important for the HRM to work correctly. I find it helps to wet my skin and the sensor portions of the sender strap with wet fingers before putting the strap on. You can tell if the watch is receiving pulse signals by the pulsing heart symbol on the watch face when the watch is in any of the HRM modes. I like the fact that one of the HRM modes is a flat line that displays programmable target minimum and maximum heart rates. I set the watch for 60% of maximum heart rate (MHR) on the low side and 80% on the high side. Heart rate then shows on a scale set with these maximum and minimum heart rates (MHR = 220 minus age). I can see visually as heart rate increases from 60% to 80% of MHR as I increase level of effort on the stationary bicycle or weight machines; and then I can see heart rate recovery as level of effort is decreased or during rest. This unit also has watch (time of day, date, and year) and chrono features that are easy to use and handy to have. This is a great watch and HRM and I recommend it to anyone looking for a combination watch and HRM.

Customer Review: Timex T5J031 is wonderful
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This model got Consumers Report (CR) Best Buy. My purchase decision was not solely base on the magazine's recommendation but the start. I went to Amazon and made my search and presented with lots of models. I limited my search on CR list and checked them out one at a time, reading all good and bad reviews had to says about each one. My decision came down with the chest strap, followed by good points said on the reviews and price. It came down to two, being closely matched, CR tilt my final decision.

I would say I am lucky, I was little apprehensive from those saying it didn't transmit their heart pulses. 95% of the time I don't have to wet the monitor to work. I compared the heart rate (HR) reading to the gym's treadmill and step ladder HR reading and are identical or off by one beat rate. If you read those top four and five stars reviews, it's pretty much what I would be saying here.

I followed the instruction how to find my maximum HR. It also let you know how to input those information on the watch. It sets five heart rate ranges for the work out, up to the 80-85% of the maximum HR. The Review section will tell the Calories count. How would I determine if the count is correct? Some guesstimate it by comparing it with what other gym machines tell them. If I do that, the result of my watch reading is on the higher side. I will not conclude that the count is wrong. First the gym machines was not calibrated to me individually while this HR monitor was set for me. Since the HR matches the machines I will highly say the Calories count is closely correct.

Previously, when working out or in a treadmill jogging, I will feel my heart beat outside my chest and force me to slow down. With this heart rate monitor I found out that I was still very much within my range and it free my hands from holding the machine's monitor. I love it and is now part of my routine. Can't go without it. Since I'm no green banana it keep me fit at the same time protect me from over exertion.

Customer Review: Works very well
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I have used this new monitor four times now. It has worked flawlessly for me. Immediate and uninterrupted monitoring with no problems. One concern I had was about whether there are display options that show heartrate in large numbers in the center. Yes. They aren't shown in the pictures here, but they do exist. In fact just about every display option imaginable exists. I have not used the lap/split feature, but I think I have used everything else successfully and am very pleased with it. The only caution, which others have noted is that the monitor strap might not be comfortable for large people. I am a measured 41" at the chest point where this fits. I use the strap fully extended. It isn't bothersome when I'm exercising, but it feels snug when I put it on. If you are much bigger, I think it might bother you. You can create a custom target zone or use one of the built in ones that adapt to your max heart rate. The "out of zone" alarm can be turned on or off directly from one of the buttons, but doesn't have a "silence" function, to stop it but leave it operating. Some other reviewer complained about this, but I find that if you just slow down (or speed up) you can silence it fairly quickly. Unless you are someplace where a few beeps will bother others, this should usually be ok. Of course, if you are wearing earphones you can't hear it anyway. There is no "vibrate mode". Overall I think this a great value.

Customer Review: Solid & Dependable Heart Rate Monitor
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Overall, I'm very happy happy with the Timex T5J031. I've had this heart rate monitor for over a month now and have used it consistently (4 days/wk) since. The set up was very easy and using it is simple as well. The controls are well laid out, in the past I've hit the wrong button with other heart rate monitors I've used. It consistently picks up the signal from the heart rate strap and maintains it through out my runs and workouts. As another reviewer mentioned, the trick is wetting the strap before heading out. I've cross checked the monitor with a treadmill at the gym and its always within 1 beat per minute! Additionally, I haven't run into issues with interference at my gym either (LA Fitness).

I do have 2 minor complaints. The calories burned are a bit too optimistic, if the monitor took age into consideration it would probably be closer to actual expenditure. The next issue really isn't a big deal for me because I record all my runs/workouts on paper but it would be nice if the monitor had more memory so multiple runs/workouts could be stored. This would obviously raise the price too!

For the price and features of this heart rate monitor you can't go wrong. I highly recommend the Timex T5J031 to anyone looking to monitor their workouts and live a healthy life style.

Customer Review: A great product
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I have recently completed heart rehabilation which lasted 3 months and and now on the maintenance program which required a heart rate monitor. I purchased this watch for that purpose and am completely satisfied with it. It has a lot of good features such as the zone monitor which contains the maximum heart rate. I wear it while doing activities around the house to monitor my heart rate and can note such activities which are good for and count for proper exercise. It is also very beneficial when working out to set the exercise machine to get the heart rate at the proper level for most heart benefit.
I like the stopwatch and timer features.

It is easy to use and the instructions were great.

I wear the watch even without the heart strap and like the accuracy. It looks great and has all the features of a regular watch. I especially like the lamp features which make it easy to read at night.

The strap is pretty tight adjusted all the way out for me but it seems ok. I have a 41-42 inch chest measurement where the strap fits. The strap does need to be snug to detect the heart rate.

Amazon had one of the better prices for this product and it only took a short time to receive it.
