Sports reviews of Timex T5G971 Unisex Sports Personal Heart Rate Monitor WatchCustomer Review: Great Product! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I love gadgets, but I love quality gadgets. In purchasing this watch I read tons of reviews on this one and several other watches. In the poor reviews I was worried about a few things before I purchased. Now that I have this watch I realize that some of those issues aren't even factors, people just didn't read the manual.
My main concerns
1 Person Wrote that you can't enter your weight: Well you can otherwise you wouldn't have accurate calories burned it is in the main setup of the watch.
Several People were frustrated with the fact that the watch only retains info when you are in the heart rate "zone" that you set. My solution to this problem is I set the minimum as low as it could be and the high as high as it could be. The downside is that you don't get beeped at when you are out of the zone but that really didn't bother me.
You CAN look at the time while you have your heart rate monitor on, just press the set button and TADA you can see time :-)
ALL Heart rate monitors need to be wet to get the accurate heart rate, just use some water or work up a sweat and it should work fine.
Finally the band on the watch is a soft rubber so I don't know how long it will last but it is comfortable and there is a warranty on it. I feel as long as you use this watch for what it is for there should be no problems.
Customer Review: Great product, here are the cons Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I'm not going to waste your time glowing over the pluses of this product. Rather, I'll go through the negatives that you see in the reviews here, and tell you whether you need to worry about them.
- Yes, the instruction and configuration is a little convoluted. But that really doesn't matter. If you're a power user, you'll have the patience to work through it. If you're a casual user (me) you just have to hit the on/off button and you're good to go.
- The chest strap is generally very good. What's great is it has a faint audible beep on the strap itself for every heart beep. So if the rhythm sounds right, then you know it's properly detecting heart beats. To get it working, usually I just wet my finger then wipe it on the strap once-over. The key is to then work up a light sweat. Once that happens, you shouldn't have to fuss with it anymore. It does need moderate moisture to start, but then only light moisture to keep it going. I tried, for example, wearing it before driving to the gym, but then my chest surface dried up, and the monitor lost pace. So I went to the restroom, moisturized it a little, then did some light cardio to get a light sweat worked up, then it was good to go. Either way, this is not a problem. You may just have to fiddle with it for the first couple times you try it. After that, you'll have a routine that's good.

Well First off, the back of my watch reads T5G981 even though it's listed as T5G971 on amazon, and the box it came in.
This HRM/watch was really easy to program, the instructions are short and sweet (book is thick due to other languages). While setting the watch, you have the option of increasing and decreasing the number instead of having to go all the way around if you over shoot.
The watch isn't bulky, and the band fits my 7.5" wrist with 2 slots to spare and can be set much tighter for some one with small wrists. The elastic sensor also fits my 48" chest with a bit of room to spare. it doesn't have a latch, you just slip it on over your head/arms. (you can adjust the tension of the elastic easily)
According to the manual it only has a 3 foot transmit range though. I haven't tested the max rage, but it worked fine with my arms fully extended up in a Y shape(watch was about 33-34 inches from transmitter). It also picks up my heart rate quickly as long as the sensor pads are moist. I shopped around quite a bit for HRMs, I'm pretty happy with this buy, and haven't found one as nice for that low of a price.
I've been using this for my Power90 workouts, it hasn't missed a beat yet, if I have any issues with it in the future I'll update this review.
Customer Review: Good Monitor with Replaceable Battery Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I already had a Polar pulse monitor, but the recovery feature intriqued me. Turns out that the recovery feature just measures the difference in your pulse in 60 seconds. You can do the same on your own just by noting your pulse, then waiting 60 seconds, and noting it again. But this is a far better unit than the Polar models I have owned. The first Polar model was so complex that I never figured out how to use it. It also dropped the measurement under vigorous exercise (cutting the grass). When the battery gave out, tried replacing it myself. Bad move. I think they make you take it to the repair center and buy a new one, like you have to with the chest strap. I got the second one, which was a simpler model. The second Polar and the Timex have never dropped the measurement, and the band on the Timex is much better (softer and easier to unbuckle). The Timex also has the lighted dial and replaceable battery in the chest strap. I don't know if you can replace the battery in the watch, since the back looks the same as the Polar. Only problem with the Timex is that the chest strap is not compatible with my treadmill like the Polar was. I'll end up using the Polar until the chest strap gives out. Bottom line, I wish I had bought the Timex at the beginning.
Customer Review: outrageous heart rate monitor Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This Timex Personal Heart Rate Monitro is truly a great trainer for me. It really helped me to prepare for my first tri this past month. I really had a difficult time (when I didn't have one) training with my team because I was a beginner, and since I'm quite the competitive athlete (playing organized sports most of my life) and since I never swam, biked & ran competitively, it really discouraged me in not being able to finish as strong as those who've trained for quite a bit longer than I. Once I ordered the Timex personal heart rate monitor, it changed my training perspective completely. I was able to focus on my pace & rate of physical exertion (i.e. how hard I could push myself), it gave me clarity on why I was in the middle of the pack of racers versus being in the front; this was the main thing for me, the clarity I received from the data about my where I was at physically the trainer/heart rate monitor gave me. I wasn't distracted/discouraged by the more experienced racers, it gave me a peace of mind because I was able to focus on my level of performance in lieu of the other more experienced racers (because competition is practically a mental state of mind & being).
