Description of Timex T5G971 Unisex Sports Personal Heart Rate Monitor WatchCombining stylish looks with heart rate monitoring features, this larger Timex Personal Heart Rate Monitor watch (model T5G971) can be worn by both men and women. It features a chest strap heart rate monitor, easily accessible function buttons, durable resin case, and comfortable resin strap with a stylish tapered profile. For integrating heart rate monitoring into your training, this watch enables you to continuously track your heart rate during exercise as well as pre-set target heart rate zones with alarms that notify you when you are out of the zone. It also offers an automatic activity timer and a workout review that recalls activity time and average/peak heart rates. This streamlined watch also has a month/day/date display with 12/24-hour time. The Indiglo night-light uniformly lights the surface of the watch dial using patented blue electroluminescent lighting technology. It uses less battery power than most other watch illumination systems, enabling your watch battery to last longer. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters (100 feet), which protects it from rain and water splashes. All Timex heart rate monitor sensors have batteries that can be replaced by consumers without requiring them to be returned to the manufacturer.
Sports reviews of Timex T5G971 Unisex Sports Personal Heart Rate Monitor WatchCustomer Review: Makes workouts more fun! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This is my first heart rate monitor, and I really couldn't be happier with it. The watch displays your heartbeat in real time with the little heart icon on the face. It recalculates every two seconds. It's simple to program it to your weight and target heart rate (just read the instructions), and the 'recall' button tells you all you want to know - time in your target zone, average heart-rate, estimated calories burned, etc.
Previous reviewers have said that they don't like not being able to see the time of day when the watch is in heart-rate mode. If you press the 'set' button it displays the time.
I'm in the process of burning off about 25 lbs of excess fat this summer. I'm cycling across the USA in my living room. This monitor is a very helpful tool for maximizing my cardio sessions. It's accurate, it makes workouts more fun and it lets me know when I have to get moving a little faster.
There's been a significant price increase since I bought this monitor (I paid $44 three weeks ago, now it's listed at $69?). But if I had it to do over, I'd still go with the Timex over the cheaper, lesser-known brand listed along side this monitor. If you look thru the reviews, more people are satisfied with the Timex and you know you're dealing with a reputable company who will honor their warranty.
The only 'cons' I can think of - #1 - The chest strap sometimes beeps when sitting idle, I guess because of electronic interference. This is not an issue when wearing the strap, but I'm thinking it may kill the battery before its time (easily replaced). #2 - The clasp on the chest strap is a bit scrawny. You have to force the tab thru it a little. I've seen no stress wear to the female part of the clasp, but if this part fails eventually, the business part of the chest strap will need to be replaced.
I hate to recommend products to anyone, and it's very rare that I'd five-star anything. But I can honestly say that this item has met or exceeded all of my expectations.
Congrats to the Celts!
Customer Review: Great bang for the buck --REVISED Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I'm not a runner, so I don't need all the fancy features included in the more expensive monitors. This unit is basic, but works very well.
The pros:
a) it works - belt sensors need only a small amt of moisture to pick up signal - which matches manual pulse rate exactly
b) very easy to program - can learn to do this in about 10 minutes - and you get to decide what your alarm zone will be, not the watch or some values from a generic list
c) replaceable batteries
d) low cost
The Cons:
None really. The only minor "complaints" I have are the recovery HR, and time in zone features. I actually pay close attention to recovery HRs. THe monitor alone, saves only the change in heart rate at one minute, not the end-exercise HR and the change. Both are really needed for proper interpretation. Also, it will only save one recovery heart rate (at a minute). You can manually trigger successive recovery heart rates at minute intervals by hitting the button each minute, but it will only save the last one (unless you have the data recorder). For zones, you can only program one zone. You have full control over the zone, but you only get one. So at the end of you workout, you can see how much time your HR was in this zone, but no additional infor about where your HR was at other times (other zones). These really aren't complaints since these are the stated (advertised) features of the monitor. But, these would be "wish lists" if I were designing the next version of this device.
BE AWARE THAT THIS MODEL USES ANALOG TRANSMISSION, NOT DIGITAL. AS A RESULT IT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE TIMEX DATA RECORDER. I FOUND THIS OUT THE HARD WAY.
Summary: For general fitness / aerobics / wt training, this unit does all you need, does it very well, and for a very reasonable price. When you read some of the "horror" stories of the more expensive or "more popular" brands not working properly, you appreciated the "bang for the buck" of this Timex all the more.
Customer Review: Easy, accurate, and fun. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought four of these to use in a college biology course that I teach. Students strap on the heart monitor and then do exercise and other activities to study how various physical activities affect heart rate. Of course, I had to test one of them on myself to see how it worked. The chest strap is an elastic loop that you put on under your shirt. It must be in contact with skin, and the surface of the black plastic sensor must be wiped down with a wet finger or cloth to ensure conduction of the heart's electrical signal across the skin and into the heart monitor. Just a moistened finger or paper towel will do it, and some people might be sweaty enough already that they don't need to add any extra moisture. Skin contact is important, so ocassionally I had a student who didn't tighten the elastic enough to make the chest strap taught. It might seem uncomfortable at first, but this sensation goes away quickly, and you will forget you are wearing the thing. One note for people with well-developed abdominal muscles that literally stick out from under your ribcage--you'll need to tighten the strap a little more than most people because the plastic sensor does not mold well to the topography of lumpy muscles (surely there is a better way to say that). If you've got flab, then hey! no problem.
The chest strap transmits your heart rate to the watch. The watch is easy to use and program. According to the instructions, the watch and chest strap need to be within 3 feet of one another. However, I found that the maximal transmission distance is more like 2 feet instead of 3. This is actually a good thing, since it will be impossible for your watch to pick up the heart rate of another person running next to you.
Customer Review: Great, Afforable Heart Rate Monitor Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This was my first Heart Rate Monitor Watch and I was not entirely sure which product to purchase. After reading all the different reviews, this product appeared to get the best reviews from all users while being offered at an afforable price. I would have to agree. I have had no issues with the watch. The band is comfortable to wear and with a little water applied before each workout is very accurate. It automatically synchs up with the equipment at the gym and I have had no issues with conflicting heart monitor devices interfering. I have used this product in aerobic classes, on the treadmill and even in water circuit training with great results.
I do have some small concerns about the way the band connects, as there is a plastic clasp, that looks like over time it could break and create an issue, but so far I see no wear and tear and I have made it a point to be careful when putting the band on and taking it off.
One other thing I will note is that once you turn off the heart rate monitor on the watch, the previous workout is not saved for you to look back at, so any information you want, calories burned, total time spent in heart rate zone etc. needs to be looked at before deactivating the heart rate monitor. Also, the calorie counter seems a little generous in it's estimations of total calories burned but I wasn't really purchasing it for this feature.
This watch has been a great purchase and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an afforable and highly effective tool for monitoring your fitness goals.
Customer Review: Awesome product...highly recommending it. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I'm finally writing my review after 2 months of daily use. Currently,I run 3 miles a day(6)days a week. Before having this watch, I never really knew how many calories i would burn during the run,as well as the 1 hr weight lifting session which follows the run. Once i saw that i burn 1400 cal in 1.5 hrs...it totally allows me to eat more (which i always refrained from in the past, just to continue my weight loss). I always thought workout hard and restrict your food intake. Well, thanks to this watch I eat more and still lose weight..boy,it's nice. I love all the features, which at first i only used the info from the calories burned...but, once you get this...you immediately start playing games. (eg. beating your time (in target zone from last week), seeing how close to your MaxHR you can get. Believe me, you will. Its user friendly. I love this watch so much and i didn't have to pay $150+
It's really a steal in comparison to all the features it comes with.
Now, I only have 3 small issues w/this watch:
1) No chrono-graph: I wear this watch 24/7 and use to use my watch to time cooking stuff.
2) The watch band has 2 flaws: (if you're a guy) it rips hair out of your wrists all the time- the solution i did was shave my wrists! The other thing is that the clasp which holds the band together has an annoying locking feature.
With that, I still highly recommend this watch. Once you see your summaries...its only good news to you. Enjoy it.
Get it now.
