Description of Timex T5G941 Heart Rate Monitor Watch

Timex entry level heart rate monitor features the basics to get into serious training. Analog transmission, 4-digit time of day display. Single-line display. Recall average, peak and minimum heart rates. Indigo night-light.
The affordable, entry-level Timex T5G941 is great for those just starting out with heart rate monitoring. This digital wristwatch-style monitor continuously tracks your heart rate via a comfortable, elastic chest strap (which fists chest sizes from 25 to 53 inches). The large, easy-to-read display recalls your activity time and average, peak, and minimum heart rate, and it includes 12/24 hour time and month/date display. It also features INDIGLO night light backlighting, up to 2 years of battery life, and is water resistant to 30 meters (100 feet)--enabling it to withstand splashes and accidental dunks into the water, but not suitable for swimming.

Sports reviews of Timex T5G941 Heart Rate Monitor Watch

Customer Review: Perfect For My Purposes
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I wanted only a basic heart rate monitor and didn't want to spend a lot of money. Lots of reviewers of other makes complained about the chest straps. So, I very nearly purchased a strapless model from a local store. However, I decided I would rather have a continuous read-out so that I could just glance at it when I wanted a reading. I'm glad I did. So far, this monitor hasn't missed a beat (pun intended) since I started using it about 3 weeks ago. I like the large read-out that I can read without my glasses and the back light allows getting readings in the dark (I usually walk at night). One important consideration in my purchase was the user replaceable batteries. Having to send a unit in to the manufacturer or take it to a jeweler to replace batteries is ridiculous. The chest strap is comfortable and hardly noticeable. The fasteners are somewhat fussy but I now don't even bother with them. I just leave them fastened and slip the strap on/off over my head like a shirt. Some folks with larger chest measurements (my chest measures 42") might have some concern with the strap. At that measurement, it is fully extended and stretches just enough to be comfortable on me. So, it might be too tight for a larger chest. However, I think it could be easily extended by sewing or gluing in an extension piece. All things considered, this is a very good basic HRM from a company that has been around for a long time.

Customer Review: Great basic heart rate monitor
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I have used this monitor every day for the past four weeks and it has performed flawlessly. This is a basic monitor with minimal functionality, but it has everything I needed for my cardio workout. This is my first monitor and I have found that it is an indispensable tool to measure the intensity of your workout. The other reviewers have covered most of the pros and cons, but I would clarify one negative point made in some reviews regarding the complexity of the instruction manual. The manual is 90 pages long because it is written in 7 languages. The negative criticism is misleading, since it takes only about nine pages in each language to explain the setup and operation of the time and date function, heart rate monitor function, and battery replacement. The instructions are simple and easy to follow. Clearly good electrical skin contact is critical to success. In addition to wetting the sensor pads, I would suggest also moistening your skin around the sensor contact area. Additionally, make sure you are wetting the sensor pads themselves (the three inch long smooth flat areas to the right and left of the sensor battery) and not the battery area. If you have a NordicTrack Treadmill, I have found that the sensor signal is NOT received by my NordicTrack C1800S treadmill, which means this monitor cannot be used in an integrated fashion with the Heart Rate programs in this treadmill.

Customer Review: Good Value for the Money
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I am very happy with my Timex heart-rate-monitor watch. I was considering a heart-rate watch that did not require a chest strap, but after a few visits to the health club, I realized that two fingers placed on a watch to get heart rate just couldn't do it. At my Bally's gym, there are several brand new $8,000 stair-climber and treadmill machines, with built in grips to measure heart rate. Yet even using these sophisticated hand grips, it takes sometimes 30 seconds for these multi-thousand-dollar machines to calculate and display my heart rate. That is with two sweaty hands and lots of contact on big metal plates. So my guess is that with a tiny watch and two dry fingers it would take even longer to get a heart rate. With this Timex watch, the elastic (back) and rubber (front) chest strap is comfortable and stays in place. Once it is on I don't feel it, and I forget completely about it. Then for the rest of the time I am wearing it, I have an accurate and immediate display of my heart rate on the watch, without ever having to touch the watch to see what my heart rate is. And all the machines at the gym marked "Polar" pick up on my chest strap radio transmissions and display my heart rate, even though the chest strap is Timex. Highly recommended. For the under-$40 price that I paid, I think this little gadget is terrific.

Customer Review: Works great
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I wanted a heart rate monitor to use for general exercise and fitness. I bought four of the Timex monitors, one for myself and three for Christmas gifts. I have used mine several times and it works fine. The machines I use at my athletic club pick up the heart rate signal automatically so I can see the heart rate without looking at the watch. I wear the watch to record the length of the workout, the average heart rate, and the maximum. I like this amount of information; I don't want to download training information to a computer and I don't want calorie information since that would probably be inaccurate anyway; that is, you get the same calorie count for a 110 woman as a 230 pound man (me). There is a small exercise booklet that comes with the watch and monitor that gives some useful information to correlate your heart rate and length of workout with your fitness level. You can use this to calculate points for the workout and compare that with the range of points you should be accumulating every week for various activities like running a 10K or a marathon. Putting the monitor strap on is only a minor inconvenience. I have had no read-out problems. The wrist watch works as a watch when not showing heart rate. This is an excellent product for the price.

Customer Review: Simple and Perfect
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I wanted a simple heartrate monitor that was easy to use and would sync with the cardio machines at the gym. I love this device. I have used it every visit and it works perfectly. The chest strap is not noticeable (I actually play intense racquetball while wearing both it and the watch and don't even feel them). I have never had to wet the strap as suggested in the instructions. The watch is simple and easy to use. 1. It tells time of day. 2. Push the button and it tells heartrate updated every couple of seconds. 3. Finish workout and hold button and it tells average HR, peak HR, and length of workout. You can also look at the time of day during your workout. That's all I need to know. So far, the HR readings have been consistent and accurate. I have had no problems and would recommend this to anyone who needs a simple HR monitor or looking for a gift for the gym rat, walker, or runner. Some of the trainers at the gym where I work out recommended another brand. It did not get great reviews on Amazon, so I went with the Timex which got good reviews. Haven't regretted it and even told the trainers how good it has been. Can't go wrong with this one - price is fair too. Not a lot of bells and whistles - just a very good monitor.
