I am new to running and therefore, my legs and muscles have yet to develop the proper conditioning they require. I am currently training for a HM and after every long run starting with 4, my knees were killing me. After careful research, I found a lack of stretching and the IT band to be the major issue. Many running friends recommended a good foam roller. Another recommended the Marathon STick. Before I committed to one, I borrowed both from friend. While the form roller did loosen up my muscles, my knees still seemed to be in trouble. Before a long run, I decided to make use of the stick. I rolled out my thighs and calves for a good 5 minutes, concentrating on the IT band area. I had no pain what so ever during and after my 9 mile long run! Bought this product and been using it since. Haven't had any issues again.
The stick it self is about is about 22 inches long with two yellow handles. In between the handles are 11 individual rolling spindles made of plastic. You would think they would need to be somewhat rigid to dig into the muscles, but they are not. I think thats why they made individual spindles. When you apply pressure with the stick to your legs, there is a bend to the stick. First time I used it, I was afraid it would snap, but after weeks of using, it is still holding up. I highly recommend this product. Make sure you use it before and after any leg training exercises. It wouldn't hurt to do it on the days off also. Sometimes I get someone to roll out my shoulders as well.
Customer Review: Best Pain You'll Ever Love! Get one! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I recently started training for my first marathon, and I learned immediately about "the stick." Apparently, I was one of the few that DIDN'T know about this amazing product. Most people write "love" on one side and "hate" on the other side of the stick. The stick definitely gives you a chance to dig in and massage any muscle, bringing blood flow back to the muscle to heal it. It really is so nice to get a massage after running.
Just an FYI, the yellow handle stick is great for those beginning out in the sport. It's a little more flexible and the length a tad bit longer than some of the professional lengths. I highly recommend it!
UPDATE: Yes, I completed the marathon, and yes, I still use this stick. It really does help break up knots, and it's one of the first things I recommend to anyone that plans to start running. The stick is still in great shape and looks new, even months after I first bought it. Make sure to follow online guides for use...several different websites give ideas for how to use them correctly. I think the "use" is fairly obvious, but it does help to get some ideas, too. Enjoy!

My husband and I love The Stick after running. We both run 5Ks and 10Ks and we both use it after races and training. It feels really good on your legs after a long or hard/fast run and it helps loosen up the muscles and keeps our legs from being sore (we train hard). Of course, don't rub it on your bones and it feels best on your larger muscles, but I use it on my calves and have used it on my back in concentrated areas too. If it works well for us, I can imagine it works very well for 1/2 marathoners and up. I highly recommend this to runners and those who do other sports/activities.
Customer Review: this stick saved my shins and I use it everyday before running! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
this stick is great. I run 3-5 times a week at a very fast past and the faster i got I started getting bad shin splints. I bought this stick based on some ppl's recommendations and it truly works. I rested my shins and then massaged them with this stick and my shin splints disappeared. Now I used the stick to massage my entire legs before and after running. it really makes a difference and feels so good. it is really easy to use too - i sometimes use it on my back. even if you dont have shin splints but looking for an easy and effective massage tool - this is it.
Customer Review: Great Product Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I found out from my running friend that I must have this stick. I purchased it and lent it to my co worker because his wife had some pain in her legs. She loved it and purchased it right away. Then another marathoner friend at work wanted to try it, so I lent it to her and she loved it so much....she didn't give it back. I just got your review form to remind me of my purchase and will need to buy another one! It's been great for everyone at my company. Try it!
