I purchased this table primarily for use with my laptop, and it's working great! I can sit cross-legged on my couch, it's exactly the right height, and I just type away! I'm a writer, and I detest sitting at a big, stodgy desk to do my work, but sitting with the computer actually on my lap got too hot, both for my lap and for my poor computer. This way, the computer can breathe and if I want to get up, I just slide the table away from me and I'm free! I was a little worried about the sliding part because we have a hardword floor and an area rug in front of the couch, so the table actually sits on both, but it slides from the carpet to the hardwood and back again without a snag. And the top is just the right size to have a separate mouse for my laptop next to it.
Like I said, my intended use of this table was for my computer work, but I find myself using it for eating too--imagine that! Since it's already set at the perfect height for my couch, it just kind of made sense, and if I get anything on it I just wipe it down with my dishrag, dry it and it's good to go for my laptop again.
As for it being difficult to put together, my boyfriend did it after barely glancing at the instructions--and it hasn't fallen apart yet, so I'd say that's pretty good.
If you're wanting something heavy and bulky and awkward, don't buy this table, but I think it was a bargain for the price--and my dog isn't even afraid of it anymore...!

I don't know if the one I received has had some improvements in material since people have reviewed it but I've had this for several weeks now and don't find anything negative about it. You don't need any tools to put it together, only takes about 5 minutes. The table top is adjustable in different positions, perfectly flat being one of them. The bar that holds it in position is made out of firm metal. No problem with plates or drinks sliding at this position. The surface is non-slip and easy to clean. There is a small lip around it the top. I have been able to cut steak, etc. on it. It does move a little bit with cutting but without any worry of anything spilling or falling over. The surface area of the top is big enough to hold a regular size dinner plate, a smaller appetizer-type plate and a drink. There are numerous height adjustments available at the bottom of the legs which are quick and easy to use. Sliding the table-mate is easy as the legs are smooth and don't catch on the carpet. This was definitely what I was looking for at a good price.Customer Review: Grandma and Grandpa love them!!

Everyone knows not to "lean" on a tv table whether it be the table-mate or an old fashioned wooden one. I find this much sturdier than the old 4 legged wooden ones Mom used to have.
Anyway, bought 1 for myself 2 years ago. Use daily for my laptop. Never take it down. No problems and I love it!
Bought 2 more for Grandma and Grandpa (92 and 84). They eat their daily meals off of them. Grandpa couldn't do stairs anymore so we fed them in the TV Room. They knew not to use them for support to get up as it is "just a tray" with legs. These tables made life so much easier for our Grandparents and much easier for us to assist them. :)
Cons ~ If you continuously take the tray up and down, the clips on the bottom wearout to where if you go to slide the table at a wrong angle, the tray will detach from the supports. Luckily no spilled food. This happened with Grandpa's as it was easier to put the tray down and slide it under the chair so it was out of the way. We just keep it up now with no problems.

This is exactly what I was looking for and exactly what it is described as! It is a portable table you can slide to yourself while in a sitting position be it on the couch or in a chair. It is adjustable and PERFECT! I use it for my laptop but you can use it to eat off of if you so desire. The safety directions instruct you not to "change, dress or rest baby on this table" so I guess some folks might confuse it as a changing table but for most of us.... it is what it is and is perfect! The inside useable tray dimensions are 19 1/2" x 14 1/2" more than adequate for my laptop. As Goldilocks would say if she had one.... not too big, not too small, just right! Folks... it is perfect... buy it now!!!! Don't put it off... you'll be happy you did.
I also like the reviewer who said she sends one to friends who are convalescing from a hospital stay and are 'couch' bound. This is just what the doctor ordered. The number of uses for this tray table is limited only by your imagination.

I just got the tablemate II today, so I can't speak to durability, but out of the box, the item is perfect. I bought it because I work from home, and usually I sit on the sofa with my computer on the coffee table. I started having extreme back trouble, to the extent that I would get numbness in my hands and fingers. My doctor said that it could be caused by the poor posture required to work like that. He recommended that I buy a large pillow for my computer to improve my posture. I remembered seeing this on tv, so I bought one. I'm sitting on my sofa right now as I write this, completely comfortable. Also, there is enough room for the mouse beside the computer. This is a great product, at least out of the box, and I recommend it for anyone with back trouble that uses their computer while in a chair or on the sofa. It works exactly as pictured! I just hope that it holds up, but for the price, my expectations are only for a year or so.
