Sports reviews of Swagman XC Cross-Country 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1/1/4 and 2-Inch Receiver)

Customer Review: A Great Bicycle Carrier for all Bicycles
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I found this Swagman XC Cross-Country 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver)Swagman XC Cross-Country 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver), to be an EXCELLENT choice to fill my needs. I have a Giant 'Revive' bicycle which is a semi-recumbant style bicycle and lacks the normal cross-bar to attach the bike. I can load my bicycle by just placing the tires in the loops and slide down the ratcheting arm and be on my way in less than 15 seconds. I also like the way it is attached to the hitch by a threaded bolt/pin, it makes for a very solid and stable unit. You cannot use the recommended locking pin, it will not fit, but not many people run around with a wrench big enough to remove it either. (I did see on another review that Swagman has a 'locking threaded pin' available).
I highly recommend it also for the quality overall. The two 'loop' ends can be raised up and held in place by the pins and if necessary the center post can be tilted to the side, or horizontal to gain access to the tail gate without having to remove the carrier.
I found the delivery time and FREE shipping as well as the price from AMAZON.COM to be very good.

Customer Review: Best BIke Rack Ever!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

The bike rack has very sturdy construction that will securely hold even the heaviest full suspension downhill bikes with ease. But most bike racks can do that. There are three major advantages that this bike rack has over the others.

First since it holds the bike by the tires, it will hold any bicycle made. You do not need any adapters or to take the wheels off of the bike. This leads to the second advantage. It takes seconds to put the bikes on the rack. You don't have to hold the bike steady with one hand and fumble with clamps or straps with the other hand. You just set the bikes tires' into the slots and slide the clamp down on the bike. It has a ratchet mechanism the holds the bikes in place. The third advantage is really a two-parter. Because the bikes sit closer to the hitch, there is no lever arm, and therefore no torque applied to the hitch. The bikes do not rattle and shake around when you make turns and go over bumps. Another benefit to this is that the rear window is no longer blocked by by the bikes. I would not go as far as to say that the view is unobstructed (in my Jeep Cherokee) but I can see a lot more of the road than I could with my other racks. This is my third and final bike rack.

The other reviews cover the rest of the features but I highly recommend this bike rack to everyone.

Customer Review: Excellent Product
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I purchased this carrier to transport my "Y" frame mountain bike. Setup was simple (10 minutes). Prior to buying the Swagman, I researched the net to find the best product available...Swagman. The unit can transport one OR two bikes. If you are only transporting one bike, simply do not mount two of the four wheel supports (supplied) and one frame "U hook" support. The wheel supports are mounted using wingnuts. To prevent theft, I suggest replacing the wing nuts with standard locking nuts (available at Home Depot etc.). Once you have your bike "fited" to the carrier, you will not need to move the supports.

If you do not have a locking hitch pin, BUY ONE. You can purchase them at U-Haul or other hitch dealers or automotive parts dealers. To prevent theft you need TWO locking hitch pins:

One for the hitch attached to your vehicle, and one to secure the rack to the hitch mounting bar (see instruction pamphlet on their website swagman.net).

The unit comes with a pin to connect the rack to the hitch bar AND a hitch pin, but both do NOT lock. Swagman sells a locking hitch pin (20.00 at Amazon) that will work to reduce the possibility of theft. Again, you need two locking hitch pins: one fore the hitch and one to secure the carrier to the bar. It's an excellent product.

Customer Review: Great Design!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is a fantastic bike rack! I've owned it for a few years, and it has easily adjusted to accomodate every bike from my sons' tiny 16"-wheel first bikes up to full-size mountain bikes. It securely holds bikes with unconventional top bars w/o any special adapters, unlike the more typical carriers where the bikes "hang" from the carrier. It's well-made, and easy to install, easy to adjust, and easy to store. Another nice feature is the ability to quickly fold down the vertical bar so I can open the rear hatch of our SUV without having to remove the rack. The clevis pins have aircraft cable tethers so I never have to worry about losing them. Now that my daughter is learning to ride, I'll probably buy the 2-bike add-on extension. The fact it can be expanded is another huge plus! If it has any negative qualities, I can think of only one: you need to be careful when releasing and raising the vertical hooks ratchet adjusters or you can pinch your hand pretty bad. I quickly learned that you should always raise the upper hook first before raising the lower hook so your fingers won't get caught between them and make Daddy say some pretty naughty words while the kids are standing around waiting for their bikes to be unloaded.

Customer Review: Works very well
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

The Swagman XC bike rack has made hauling our bikes much easier than our truck bed mounting device. The truck bed system works reasonably well, but it not fast and it is a two person job. Hoisting the bikes and oneself into the truck bed is cumbersome and can be quite awkward. This hitch mount rack is much easier.

The hitch mount is fast and easy to install on the truck's receiver. Loading or unloading the bikes takes just a few seconds and no need to get into or out of the truck bed. The bikes are securely held in place with the hook clips that mount on the center bar of the rack. The bed mounting system probably did keep the bikes more protected because they are in the bed, but the hitch mount is fine and the ease/convenience of this rack far outweighs any increased potential for bike damage.

Please do note that the suggested Swagman locking hitch pin (at least the one suggested at the time of this writing) will not work with the XC rack. The rack requires a threaded hitch pin, which is included with the rack.

This rack is a good product. Wish I would have ordered it earlier and saved myself a lot of aggravation loading and unloading our bikes.
