No pumping, no chemicals, no test strips, no timekeeping, no lubricating, and no replacement filters are required. All that is required is to push the water purifier's button (once for 32 ounces, twice for 16 ounces), place the pen-like lamp in clear water, and stir until an indicator light turns green. Water has no aftertaste after being purified. Measuring 6.1 inches long, the purifier comes with a nylon case and a user's guide. It exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for testing microbiological water purifiers.
Sports reviews of SteriPEN Adventurer Handheld Water PurifierCustomer Review: Seems OK Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I've only tried this Steripen twice - in the kitchen with already clean water just to see what it would do. Seems to function - to the extent that I can tell.
Customer Review: great little travel tool Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
We bought one of these for our family trip to Ethiopia. It was small and lightweight, which we needed it to be, as part of our trip involved taking minimal luggage.
We used the Steripen in our wide-mouthed water bottles, and it was great. I always seemed a bit dubious about whether its coloured light was really going to do anything, but we were ok, so it must have! Because of that, it gave us piece of mind that we weren't drinking any nasties that might have horrible effects on us. We used it morning and night, every day for two weeks.
We kept it in its little pouch, and folded the instructions down to shove in with it. I felt better about having the instructions with us, in case anything strange happened with it. Once or twice it behaved differently than what I expected, so I was able to use the instructions to help me figure out what it meant.
I'd highly recommend it to travellers. My only slightly negative comment is that it chewed through the batteries. I would consider getting one of the solar-powered chargers for it if we were going anywhere where we might need it again. But then that would add weight...
Customer Review: Lightweight but doesn't like the cold Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
Having read elsewhere that the Adventurer was hard on batteries but most people were using rechargeables, I decided to do my own testing using Panasonic Lithium Photo batteries. Thus far I have gotten about 20 liters of purification over a period of 6 days. The only time I have encountered any problems is in cold. For the first test I put the pen in the refrigerator for about 3 hours and tried to use it but it only flashed the red light saying the battery was too weak. After warming it up for 5 minutes with body heat, it performed fine. Another time I left it outside 40F for a few hours and tried it but had the same problem. Again, after warming with body heat the unit worked fine.
I was looking forward to using the Adventurer in the winter when filters freeze and chemicals take way too long. After these tests it is obvious that I will have to keep it warm or warm it up before I use it. I think it must really require a big "shot" of power and it is necessary that the batteries are warm to be able to do this.
Recommended with qualifiers.
Customer Review: A great hiking companion Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
My wife and I do backcountry hiking in a local wilderness area here in Colorado and the water is mostly very clear. That is the most important consideration for the use of this UV purifier. If the water is cloudy or has much turbidity, it must be filtered thus defeating its major advantage: speed.
We have found that it works as advertises and have confidence that it is actually killing the pathogens. The buyer must read the instructions to understand its operation in order to put trust in its performance.
We carry two sources of water purification in case of battery failure or we break it. Tablets take more time but will also be the lightweight option if relying on the SteriPen as a primary source of water treatment. If there were more than two of us, we would use the MSR that pumps directly into the Nalgene one liter bottle. In two summers use we have been very satified with its features: speed, size and weight.
Customer Review: The Purifier works but not the price ! Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
i purchased the Steripen Adventurer from Amazon thinking I was getting a better price than from other online merchants. However, the supplied batteries were no good and had to be replaced at an additional cost of $13.00+. There went the price savings plus some. I don't know if the thing works or not, however I do know that the river water on the trip that I took it on is safe to drink. My guess is that Amazon doesn't rotate their stock well enough.
