Description of SteriPEN Adventurer Handheld Water Purifier

SteriPEN Adventurer is the ultimate tool to take on outdoor adventures for safe drinking water anywhere on earth. With the SteriPEN Adventurer, you're carrying hundreds of gallons of pure water in your backpack while adding only 110 g (4oz.) to your pack weight. The Adventurer uses ultraviolet light (UV) to destroy the DNA of microorganisms making them unable to reproduce and cause illness. There's no pumping, no chemicals, no test strips, no timekeeping, no aftertaste, no clogging, no lubricating and no replacement filters. Just push the SteriPEN Adventurer button once for 32oz. or twice for 16oz., place the lamp in clear water, and stir until the indicator light turns green.
Great for hiking and camping, this handheld water purifier destroys viruses, bacteria, and common protozoa. It weighs just 3.6 ounces with two non-rechargeable, disposable batteries (included) and purifies 16 ounces of water in 48 seconds, or 32 ounces in 90 seconds. The purifier employs ultraviolet light (UV) to destroy the DNA of microorganisms, making them unable to reproduce and cause illness. It's effective against outdoor microbes like giardia and cryptosporidium; pathogens that cause diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis, and Legionnaire's Disease; household germs such as bird flu, E. coli, and salmonella; staph and strep; and natural-disaster risks like botulism, cholera, smallpox, and typhoid.

No pumping, no chemicals, no test strips, no timekeeping, no lubricating, and no replacement filters are required. All that is required is to push the water purifier's button (once for 32 ounces, twice for 16 ounces), place the pen-like lamp in clear water, and stir until an indicator light turns green. Water has no aftertaste after being purified. Measuring 6.1 inches long, the purifier comes with a nylon case and a user's guide. It exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for testing microbiological water purifiers.

Customer Review: Works Great for Backpacking
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I use this for backpacking trips. I love it because it's fast and instantly sterilizes my water. I backpack lightweight, and there's nothing worse than carrying around nalgenes of water that you're not supposed to drink for 4 hours while the tablets do their work. I don't use a filter but I haven't had trouble finding water that's clean enough for me to be comfortable using this. I often carry around some alcohol wipes to clean off the rim of my nalgene after filling it up in a stream because the UV pen only sterilizes the water below the waterline in the bottle-not on the rim. I don't worry too much about this because the innoculum size of anything living in a drop of water on the rim of my nalgene won't likely make me violently sick, but it's not a bad idea and alcohol wipes are useful to have anyway. Also, this thing kills viruses too! A major plus if you're using it to avoid getting things like Hepatitis A while overseas.

Obviously, I always carry a few iodine tablets because I would never trust a piece of technology with my gastrointestinal function, but I have used it on a dozen or so 2-3 day trips have yet to have any problems.

I was a little worried about whether this would be the way to go when updating my water sterilization methods, but I'm definitely happy with it.

Customer Review: Works Great
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I have used the SteriPEN Adventurer for a week of backpacking in Colorado. Several days involved sterilizing what you would ordinarily call "good" water from running streams. But, several days included taking water from a lake in an area with heavy human use (no human waste management like a pit toilet). The water was obviously questionable and I was concerned that the SteriPEN would not be up to the challange. But, the only way to know was to try it, so I did. No illness at all. Got at least 50 quart sterilizations with one set of two CR123A batteries (non-rechargable). The product and its single LED signals take a little getting used to, but my experience convinces me it does the job.

It is very rugged - though I always worried about breaking the bulb. I took no special precautions carrying it. Simply stowed the provided hard shell and poly-canvas carry bag in the backpack with other gear. It traveled without problem.

Customer Review: Well, I did not get sick, nor did he....
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

After a good friend returned from a tour in Iraq, he told me about a "sterilizing pen" that he had used while overseas. I have to admit that I was rather skeptical being a pump carrying/Iodine using type hiker, but I decided to give the thing a try (swayed by the info that other military folks in my friends unit did get sick, and the information on the Steri-Pen website as to the frequency of illness with the methods of purification I was using).

Since its purchase I have utilized the Steri-Pen on two multi day hiking trips, and have felt fine the whole time. Admittedly, I did not drink from any questionable sources, nor did anyone else in my party get sick using other methods. But with the weight being so little and the level of removal claimed by the maker being so high, I felt that this was a great purchase for someone into lightweight packing.

I will amend this entry if I do get sick in the future......

Customer Review: very happy with mine
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

i'm extremely happy with my steripen. I just returned from a six night camping trip during which i used it for the first time. Having read reviews here before going out, i was worried about it going through batteries too fast. I put 2 new cr123 batteries in it before going out and took along 2 as a spare; ended up not needing the spares at all. It purified all the water for 2 people, including water used for making coffee/tea and cooking, for 6 nights on one set of batteries. I have no idea how close the batteries are to being spent; after the entire trip, it was still working fine with the original batteries. The user manual said it will purify approximately 5 gallons per set of batteries, but i'm almost positive it did significantly more. I was very pleasantly surprised. We were camping in warm weather, mostly dry, although it did rain on us one night. I highly recommend it and honestly would not go camping again without it.

Customer Review: Excellent device for sterilizing water
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I purchased the SteriPEN Adventurer before taking a trip to India. While I mostly drank bottled water during my trip, I did use the SteriPEN a few times on tap water and did not get sick. (It kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses by breaking down their DNA and proteins, rendering them inert.) So, I believe that the product works as advertised. While the SteriPEN is a little bigger than you might expect from some pictures, it is small enough to fit into any luggage or backpack you might have and is easy to use. It's also much more convenient than using water purification tablets since you don't have to wait after using it. I'll take this with me whenever I visit any country with questionable drinking water.
