Description of Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Knife Sharpener 204MF

The 204MF includes one pair medium-grit (brown) triangle stones for aggressive sharpening and one pair of fine-grit (white) triangle stones for professional-grade finishing. Their patented triangular shape sharpens plain edges on the flat sides and spyderedges (serrations) on the corners. A groove running the stone's length sharpens pointed items such as fishhooks, darts, awls, and punches. Keyed slots/holes in the abs plastic base precisely preset the stone's sharpening angle to a 30° (15° each side) or 40° (20° each side) for thick and thin profiled knife blades. On the end of the base is a 12.5° scissor setting. When turned over, the base's underside accommodates two side-by-side stones (flat side up) for benchstone sharpening. Plastic lid snaps halfway over the base creates a stable hand-hold and a pair of brass safety rods protect the user's hands during sharpening. All of the components fit into the base and the lid snaps on as a cover for portability, or the base can be bolted to a table or counter-top for permanent use. Instructional 204MF DVD and booklet is included.
The Tri-Angle Sharpmaker (204MF) includes two sets of high alumina ceramic stones, a pair of medium-grit 7 by .5 inch stones for aggressive sharpening and a set of fine white 7 by .5 inch stones for professional grade finishing. The stones are triangular for sharpening plainedges on the flat sides and SpyderEdges (serrations) on the corners. A furrow running the length of each stone lets you sharpen pointed items like fishhooks, darts, and awls.

Included is a set of brass safety rods to protecting your hands while sharpening. All components snap into the self-contained ABS plastic base and lid and are ready to travel with you. Die-cut into the base are keyed slots and holes fitted for the stones, which accurately set the stone's sharpening angle at for knives and a scissor setting.

Turn the base over, a channel lets you lay two stones side-by-side (flat-side up) for use as a benchstone. The lid snaps halfway over the base creating a handhold for stability while you're sharpening. Included is a set of brass safety rods to protect the users hands while sharpening. Ceramic stones, like glass, will break if dropped, so Spyderco advises you to handle carefully. Use them dry, without oil, water or lubricants. To clean, scrub stones with a plastic scouring pad and powered abrasive cleaner, let air-dry. The sharpening system comes with instruction book and DVD and is autoclave safe.

Chances are you've heard it said, "a sharp knife is safer than a dull one." Spyderco believes this quote originated from first hand experience and find it to be true. The Sharpmaker was Spyderco's first product, which the company made and sold before getting into the knife business.

Customer Review: The Best Sharpener I Have
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I bought my Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker about a year ago at a local gun show. The couple at the knife sales booth is at nearly every show I attend. I struck up a conversation and Jim recommended this unit and told me to watch the accompanying DVD.

He was dead on in his recommendation. I used flat stones for years and never really learned the skill of knife sharpening on a flat stone. Sometimes it would work; mostly not. However, learning to use this unit is pretty straightforward. Choose the correct pair of slot to get the correct angle, insert the proper stone for the condition of the blade (fine for rough work, extra-fine for finishing). Draw the blade down the stones, alternating sides, and test.

A trick Jim showed me is to use a soft rubber eraser to clear the stones about every ten strokes. I can tell a difference in the bite of the stones against the blade. This is a really good trick.

Be careful, though! The blade will be sharp when you finish. If you're accustomed to handling dull blades, you'll be surprised at how quickly they sharpen.

Customer Review: Awesomely designed, great sharpener
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I got this for Christmas and eagerly assembled it to sharpen my Spyderco Tenacious. Within five minutes, my 8cr13MoV blade was now sharp enough to shave the hair on my arm and chop paracord cleanly. I then ran my Ka-Bar USMC Fighting Knive through the Sharpmaker's easy 4 stage process and now my Ka-Bar is sharper than it has ever been. It makes the factory edge look like a butter knife. The Sharpmaker also works wonders on cheap steals like 440 Stainless and higher end steals like 1085 Carbon and VG10.

The Sharpmaker is set up so that you can decide on a 30 or 40 degree angle as well as a side triangle slot for sharpening scissors, chisels and other tools. Every aspect and face of this sharpener is design for practical use and function.

The Sharpmaker also comes with an infomercial-style instructional DVD that goes over the sharpening processes as well as sheds light on certain blade types and the technique that works on them the best. So far I have failed to find a fault in this sharpening system's design or effectiveness.

Customer Review: Easy as
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

After reading the negative reviews on Amazon I was worried there was a big learning curve to the sharpmaker, but was I wrong. I had tried on various stones by hand, but I could never get the razor sharp like they came from the factory and in some cases not even a good working edge. I was very surprise when I got the sharpmaker and watched the DVD; there was little talk of basic technique for using the sharpmaker, mostly how to sharpen different things. I tried on a cheap knife, I was amazed. It took me awhile going through each stage but at the end it was at least twice as sharp as I'd ever had it including from new! I tried a few other cheap knives and it worked great. I moved onto decent knives with even better results. It can take some time but I definitely think it is worth it because I can actually get shaving sharp edges with little skill. So far I have sharpened a variety of steels including 1095, S30v, 1085, aus 8, 8cr13mov and d2.

Also it is very versatile and can do much more then I thought. Great system at a reasonable price.

Customer Review: Fantastic products! Much simpler than stone!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I highly recommend this product to anyone looking to sharpen their kitchen/pocket knives.

Spyderco Sharpmaker is not really any different than regular sharpening stones. It simply takes a small stone and places it in a way that it maintains a proper angle for edge refinement. I never managed to get knives shaving sharp using japanese whetstones, and that's because I am unable to keep perfect 15 or 20 degree angle of blade to stone by hand. Sharpmaker takes care of that! All you need to do is make sure that you keep the blade vertical as you slide it over the stones. This keeps the angle consistent and assures perfect edge. Furthermore, alternating sides with each stroke assures even sharpening and reduces the burr to minimum.

If you're like me and want a shaving sharp edge on your knives, but cannot achieve that using regular flat stone, then get a sharpmaker! You won't regret it! And for "scary sharp" edge also get a pair of ultrafine stones (204UF) - they can get the edge honed so well you'll be literally afraid of it!

Customer Review: Final solution
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I've experience with a lot of knives...hunters, utilities, camping/survival, pocket, fishing/fillet and kitchen knives. I appreciate the different purposes, knife makers and steels used in all of them. My father taught me at young age how to sharpen pocket knives using a sharpening (wet) stone and as a result I've always been able to put a razors edge on any knife that has enough carbon to take it. As I've added S30V, 154CM and D2 steels to my knife collection, I've found it's much harder to get that finishing hair popping edge on these new blades. In some cases it's been impossible. Within 30 minutes of receiving this sharpening system, that problem was solved. I already owned DMT diamond sharpeners, Smith Diamond sharpeners, Japanese waterstones, Arkansas stones, Lansky and Smith sharpening systems...I've used a combination of all of them to get knives of different steels to a razor sharpness. The Sharpmaker quickly gives that finishing touch to the harder steels. Follow the CD and you should be in business. Highly recommend!
