Description of Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Knife Sharpener 204MF

The 204MF includes one pair medium-grit (brown) triangle stones for aggressive sharpening and one pair of fine-grit (white) triangle stones for professional-grade finishing. Their patented triangular shape sharpens plain edges on the flat sides and spyderedges (serrations) on the corners. A groove running the stone's length sharpens pointed items such as fishhooks, darts, awls, and punches. Keyed slots/holes in the abs plastic base precisely preset the stone's sharpening angle to a 30° (15° each side) or 40° (20° each side) for thick and thin profiled knife blades. On the end of the base is a 12.5° scissor setting. When turned over, the base's underside accommodates two side-by-side stones (flat side up) for benchstone sharpening. Plastic lid snaps halfway over the base creates a stable hand-hold and a pair of brass safety rods protect the user's hands during sharpening. All of the components fit into the base and the lid snaps on as a cover for portability, or the base can be bolted to a table or counter-top for permanent use. Instructional 204MF DVD and booklet is included.
The Tri-Angle Sharpmaker (204MF) includes two sets of high alumina ceramic stones, a pair of medium-grit 7 by .5 inch stones for aggressive sharpening and a set of fine white 7 by .5 inch stones for professional grade finishing. The stones are triangular for sharpening plainedges on the flat sides and SpyderEdges (serrations) on the corners. A furrow running the length of each stone lets you sharpen pointed items like fishhooks, darts, and awls.

Included is a set of brass safety rods to protecting your hands while sharpening. All components snap into the self-contained ABS plastic base and lid and are ready to travel with you. Die-cut into the base are keyed slots and holes fitted for the stones, which accurately set the stone's sharpening angle at for knives and a scissor setting.

Turn the base over, a channel lets you lay two stones side-by-side (flat-side up) for use as a benchstone. The lid snaps halfway over the base creating a handhold for stability while you're sharpening. Included is a set of brass safety rods to protect the users hands while sharpening. Ceramic stones, like glass, will break if dropped, so Spyderco advises you to handle carefully. Use them dry, without oil, water or lubricants. To clean, scrub stones with a plastic scouring pad and powered abrasive cleaner, let air-dry. The sharpening system comes with instruction book and DVD and is autoclave safe.

Chances are you've heard it said, "a sharp knife is safer than a dull one." Spyderco believes this quote originated from first hand experience and find it to be true. The Sharpmaker was Spyderco's first product, which the company made and sold before getting into the knife business.

Sports reviews of Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Knife Sharpener 204MF

Customer Review: Best sharpening set available.
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I have been sharpening knives on flat stones by hand for many years. I just got a Spyderco Sharpmaker, and it's the best contraption I have ever used.

The stones are good quality. Similar cheaper brands have lumps on otherwise perfect stones, making them almost useless. Both the coarse and fine stones leave a relatively fine edge considering how well they remove metal.

The triangular shape of the stones makes them work very well for regular knives and serrated knives as well.

It comes with an instruction book that tells you exactly what to do. If you follow the instructions, you will get a very sharp edge. The only skill involved is holding the blade up and down, and that isn't hard at all.

The price looks high, but you get a total of 4 long stones (two fine, two medium) of good quality. It is well worth the price to be able to keep your knives sharp on your own instead of paying someone to do it, which adds up fast.

I don't recommend sharpening systems that involve clamping a guide system to the blade because they tend to slip and/or scratch the blade, are annoying to use for quick touch-ups, and don't actually maintain a good angle along the whole blade due to the mechanics involved.

Customer Review: A Cheap Sharp Knife is better than a dull High Quality Knife
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I am a knife collector, even bought several sharpening systems. This is the best. Drawing the blade at the proper angle across the sharpening surface is the first important thing. Spyderco makes that easy because the holder sets the stones at the proper angle and all you do is hold the blade vertical and draw it down across the two sides.

Once you realize how easy getting the edge you learn to feel the edge with your finger to tell which side the edge has a minute burre overhang. Then one gentle draw down that side to straighten the burre and you have a blade that is really sharp.

Cheaper steel knives will not hold their edge as long as better ones. With this sharpener it is so easy that even your cheaper knives will be almost as useful, say in the kitchen because it is so easy to resharpen. This sharpener will make you an expert if you give it a little practice. I even under sharpen some knives because they hold their edge better when it is a little thicker rather than "razor sharp" which has a thinner edge.

Thorough instructions explain how to sharpen many different edges too like bread knives (serrated), scissors, Japanese blades (one sided), fish hooks, etc.

Customer Review: Easy to use with consistent razor-sharp results
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I sharpened 5 straight-edge knives and 13 serrated knives that a friend of mine had given up on. Sharpening the knives was relaxing and fun, so I took the Spyderco sharpener with me on vacation and sharpened all my relatives' knives too! The knives all became sharp enough to cut paper and shave hair. When cooking, the sharpened knives also tend to catch on the cutting board, or occasionally embed themselves if I push a little too hard.

Several reviewers mentioned that while they were able to quickly make small pocket knives razor-sharp, they had less luck with some of their kitchen knives. I've been able to sharpen every knife, but I do notice that the small pocket knives are sharpened much faster than the long kitchen knives. On average, the time and number of strokes it took me to sharpen a knife was proportional to its length. I guess this is because it's the downward motion towards the V that sharpens the knife, and with a long knife you're spreading out the abrasion over a longer edge.

By the way, the manual was hard to find when I got my package. It's actually sandwiched (hidden) in the cardboard, between the CD and the Spyderco sharpener.

Customer Review: Fantastic value
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I bought the Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker last month and could not be more pleased with the results. Like most people I have many kitchen, utility, camping knives that have grown dull over the years. I've tried using regular sharpening stones in the past but the results were always unsatisfactory.

The Sharpmaker is an excellent system no matter what your experience or background in sharpening. The product comes with both a helpful instructional DVD and an instruction book. I used both and within 10 minutes of viewing the DVD I was sharpening knives like a pro. This system will literally sharpen anything including knives, scissors, darts (their points), fishing hooks, you name it.

The key to its usability is that you just have to hold the knife straight up-and-down. You do not have to try and hold it at a difficult angle. Who can hold a knife at a 40-degree angle? But holding a knife vertically is much easier to do and results in a uniformly razor sharp edge.

I rarely post reviews but this product is so good (and so affordable) that every household should have this kit. Really, anyone can use this tool to make razor sharp edges on their knives.

Customer Review: indispensable
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I received this as a gift for Christmas, and it has quickly become one of my favorite household tools. For years it's been a huge pain for me to keep my knives sharp: I live in a small town where there is not professional to do it, and learning how to get the right angle with a stone takes LOTS of practice, ugh! A few years ago my mother got the "Furi Diamond Fingers System" sharpener, which I borrowed. It worked fine, but wasn't anything special. This Spyderco sharpener, however, is.

It's incredible easy to use- the system creates the angle for you. All you have to be able to do is hold a blade straight up and down. It comes with two different grit stones so you can get a SUPER sharp edge (I have to warn everyone when they use my knives that they are really, really, no I mean really, sharp). But what makes it better than the rest is that you can use it to sharpen just about anything: all sorts of scissors, potato peelers, garden tools. The list goes on and on. The first month I had it, I was constantly coming across something new that would work better if it were sharp, and 3 minutes later, it was.

Next Christmas, I'll be giving these as gifts.
