Description of Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Knife Sharpener 204MF

The 204MF includes one pair medium-grit (brown) triangle stones for aggressive sharpening and one pair of fine-grit (white) triangle stones for professional-grade finishing. Their patented triangular shape sharpens plain edges on the flat sides and spyderedges (serrations) on the corners. A groove running the stone's length sharpens pointed items such as fishhooks, darts, awls, and punches. Keyed slots/holes in the abs plastic base precisely preset the stone's sharpening angle to a 30° (15° each side) or 40° (20° each side) for thick and thin profiled knife blades. On the end of the base is a 12.5° scissor setting. When turned over, the base's underside accommodates two side-by-side stones (flat side up) for benchstone sharpening. Plastic lid snaps halfway over the base creates a stable hand-hold and a pair of brass safety rods protect the user's hands during sharpening. All of the components fit into the base and the lid snaps on as a cover for portability, or the base can be bolted to a table or counter-top for permanent use. Instructional 204MF DVD and booklet is included.
The Tri-Angle Sharpmaker (204MF) includes two sets of high alumina ceramic stones, a pair of medium-grit 7 by .5 inch stones for aggressive sharpening and a set of fine white 7 by .5 inch stones for professional grade finishing. The stones are triangular for sharpening plainedges on the flat sides and SpyderEdges (serrations) on the corners. A furrow running the length of each stone lets you sharpen pointed items like fishhooks, darts, and awls.

Included is a set of brass safety rods to protecting your hands while sharpening. All components snap into the self-contained ABS plastic base and lid and are ready to travel with you. Die-cut into the base are keyed slots and holes fitted for the stones, which accurately set the stone's sharpening angle at for knives and a scissor setting.

Turn the base over, a channel lets you lay two stones side-by-side (flat-side up) for use as a benchstone. The lid snaps halfway over the base creating a handhold for stability while you're sharpening. Included is a set of brass safety rods to protect the users hands while sharpening. Ceramic stones, like glass, will break if dropped, so Spyderco advises you to handle carefully. Use them dry, without oil, water or lubricants. To clean, scrub stones with a plastic scouring pad and powered abrasive cleaner, let air-dry. The sharpening system comes with instruction book and DVD and is autoclave safe.

Chances are you've heard it said, "a sharp knife is safer than a dull one." Spyderco believes this quote originated from first hand experience and find it to be true. The Sharpmaker was Spyderco's first product, which the company made and sold before getting into the knife business.

Customer Review: WOW! ~~~You NEED THIS!!!!!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Boy! If I sound excited about this item, you bet your butt it's true! This marvelous tool belongs in EVERY kitchen, ASAP!

I am 59, almost 60, and have used knives all my life, both outside, and inside, and especially in the kitchen. One thing I was never taught by my dad (died when I was 10) and also was never able to "master" in these subsequent years, was how to sharpen a knife! Trust me, I can take a dull knife and make it duller!

Then, Zam! I'm at a local (big, well-known, name) shop here two weeks ago, and they are giving a knife sharpening seminar in the hunting & archery department, so, naturally, I trecked upstairs to check it out.

Well, the guy doing the demonstration showed us 3 things, a flat oilstone system, a hydrastone system, and this little baby. He thoroughly went through all three systems with us, carefully explaining their workings, and what they are best for.

Hydrastone and oilstone are for outdoor/sporting/pocket knives, where you want and need a very fine edge to the blade, and always polishing at the end with a leather strop and jeweler's polish.

But, for KITCHEN, the single best item is this system from Spyderco. I saw it work, I even tried it myself, and can do it! And, if I can do it, you can, too! Trust me! I purchased this ON THE SPOT, and it was NOT an impulse purchase, either!

Every knife in my block, and in my utility drawer is now razor sharp, able to slice down a piece of adding machine tape (paper). What a truly GREAT feeling to pick up ANY knife and be able to cut with it! I'm in heaven! Another tip...when finished with ANY knife, wash and rinse in hot soapy water and wipe dry immediately....DO NOT allow foodstuff to "sit" for any length of time on a blade, especially if you have been cutting fruit.

OK, I'll stop now, I realize I've made this a long review, but I am very pleased and excited about this product, and want you to know about it, and to know that it is a GREAT product, and it REALLY WORKS! And WELL! ~operabruin

Customer Review: The Bottom Line? Amazing.
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Rarely has anything I've purchased from Amazon performed so well that I felt compelled to write a product review for it. However, the Spyderco Sharpmaker is just such a product. I own a number of knives, folding and fixed, that run from 1.5" to a a whopping 18". Among these are blades made from AUS 8, SK-5, S30V, and 154CM. Some are old and beaten. Others are safe-queens. But there is not one of them that cannot be ground a shaving-sharp edge with the Sharpmaker.

The pre-set angles mean that even a novice (like myself) can get their knives terrifyingly sharp. The choice between 30 and 40 degree angles also means that experienced sharpeners with more particular needs (such as minor re-profiling or heavy-duty sharping of neglected blades) will also be satisfied. The sharpening sticks can also be arranged such as to be used freehand, for those who like to sharpen their blades old-school style. The included protection rods ensure that you won't hurt yourself unless you're really trying. I'm also not a manual-reader by habit, but the Sharpmaker's included instructional DVD and manual are incredibly useful. Both will instruct, in clear and concise language, exactly how to sharpen your knife depending on your particular needs (fine edge, durable edge, rusted/neglected edge, hard steel, soft steel, etc.). Additionally, the manual provides instructions for sharpening not just knives, but everything from scissors to kitchen cutlery to nail clippers (a HUGE plus, as my experience has shown). The curious grooves cut into the stones also allow you to sharpen serrations and fish hooks, both of which I have tried with great success using this feature.

For those who don't care for the nitty-gritty details, and care only about performance, I'll put it bluntly: when you can sharpen an S30V gentleman's folder AND a 20" 1085 carbon steel machete on the same hand-held sharpener, it's the best sharpening-product you're likely to find.

Customer Review: The perfect sharpening system?
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

As a hobbyist woodworker who works primarily with hand tools, I've had to learn how to put a razor edge on things like plane blades and chisels. While I've managed to master that skill (can shave hair off my arm with these tools), putting a sharp edge on my kitchen knives has been a nightmare. I've tried numerous methods, none of which has worked well.

About a year ago, I puchased the Spyderco sharpening kit. Read the manual, watched the DVD, put my kitchen knives to it, and......ended up with pretty dull knives. Frustrated, I put this kit in a kitchen drawer.

Fast-forward to last week. The kitchen knives are dull again, and none of my sharpening systems work on the knives. So, I pulled out the Spyderco again and gave it another try. This time, I tried sharpening my serrated bread knife. After just a few strokes, it was good as new. So, I tried it on the straight knives again, but only got a modest increase in sharpness. Now convinced that some of my kitchen knives are made from inferior stainless steel, I tried sharpening my Swiss Army Knife. Again, after a few stokes on the Sharpmaker, I had a wicked sharp knife.

I was down in the workshop today, sharping my plane blades and chisels. The last plane blade to sharpen was for a scrub plane...the blade on these is very convex, so sharping it is always a challenge. Fortunately, it does not need to be super sharp, and never has been. The Sharpmaker was sitting out, so I said "what the heck", and gave the scrub plane's blade a few freehand strokes on the Sharpmaker...no sharpening jig to hold the blade like I normally use. For fun, I tried to shave hair off my arms....AND IT WORKED! I couldn't believe it...this Sharpmaker makes sharpening TOO easy!

It's American-made, very well thought-out, and works amazingly well when your blades aren't made of junk steel. What more could you ask for?

Customer Review: Excellent, Convenent, Home-Sharpening System
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I've used Smith Stones (poor at best for a razor-sharp knife: leaves an abrasive cutting edge), Lansky (good system, but nowhere near as good as the Spyderco Tri-Angle),and finally the Tri-Angle. This Spyderco sharpener has produced factory-sharp edges on my Benchmade CPM 150 and my Kershaw S30V, 14C28N,and 440C steel blades from Kershaw. I ordered the Ultra-Fine Rods with the system and often use them to reestablish or hone the edges on my knives. I prefer using the 30-degree angle option on this system for a finer cutting edge. Repeatability is easily achieved with mindful knife movement along the ceramic rods. This system is an improvement over the well performing Lansky because one can sharpen practically any length and any height blade. There is no clamping system like the Lansky. It's impossible to accurately sharpen a blade like the one on the SOG Twitch and Twitch II using the Lansky--you cannot get a 'bite' on the blade in the Lansky vice, which is an integral part of Lansky's system. With the Tri-Angle, however, you free-hold the knife at a 90-degree angle to the sharpener's base and slide and pull the blade back from rear to front. You do this repeatedly, lessening pressure on the blade throughout the process. I supposed we develop our own technique, subtle as they may be, to get the desired sharpness. The learning curve is brief, by the second or third session, I was producing excellent blade edges, exactly as I wanted them. By far the best system I've used. I've not tried the Edge Pro, but see no reason for the added expense of such a system when this one enables me to produce super sharp and consistent blade sharpness. It is simply the best system for the price. My Smith stones went to Good Will; and the Lansky sits in a drawer until such time as I decide to give it away or sell it. Get a pair of the Spyderco's Ultra-Fine Rods, they are perfect for creating razor-sharp, fine edges.

Customer Review: Excellent Knife Sharpener
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I'm giving this Spyderco knife sharpener 5 stars. I have been a long time fanatic about keeping knife blades sharp, whether it's my Swiss Army knife or the kitchen cutlery. Usually I have had to do this with stones. Stones are problematic because they require some sort of lubricant, whether oil for natural stone or water for diamond impregnated versions, which adds to the mess. Then there is the problem of keeping the proper sharpening angle. Without an angle guide or a keen sense of the feel for consistent angle (and correct for the type of edge you are sharpening), sharpening on a stone can quickly result in very frustrating sharpening experience. The Spyderco pre-angles the stones for you and you only need to draw the blade heel to toe while keeping the blade straight up and down (I do this while standing over the unit), which is a much easier method of maintaining a consistent blade angle.

This unit eliminates the need for oils or water and the sharpening stones need only be cleaned with any ordinary sink cleanser once you have sharpened your blades, then put away. In two days of going through kitchen knives I have already brought blades up to razor sharpness with none of the grief stones create, including serrated edges, which are impossible to properly sharpen on a flat stone.

What I'm also pleased about is being able to accurately sharpen scissors. My wife bought a pricey pair of Farberware scissors that must have slipped their quality control checks...it wouldn't cut as good as a cheap $3 pair of scissors. When I saw the Spyderco sharpened scissors I tried it out, and the once hard to use Farberware scissors now slice so well you can just slide the blades across paper and plastics and slice them clean through without having to hack at it the we used to. Cool!
