The red LEDs--which last for up to 80 hours on a single set of batteries--are popular among pilots, astronomers, truck drivers, military personnel, and police officers. The flashlight, which comes with a deluxe holster, carries a limited lifetime warranty.
Sports reviews of Smith & Wesson Galaxy 13 LED Flashlight (10 White LED & 3 Red LED)Customer Review: Just the light I needed. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
After reading many reviews of many flashlights I decided on this one for my main hunting flashlight. I wanted one that threw a flood beam for a short distance so I could see where I am walking but not light up the whole forest or to spot something a hundred yards away. I also need a red light bright enough to travel a known trail without tripping over vines, limbs, and roots, and for looking around inside my tent style blind for scent wafers, bug repellent, whatever, while waiting for sunrise. When the light arrived I was extremely please with its heft. The body is well checkered for a good grip. It is uncomplicated;only two buttons, no fumbling around with tail or bezel lockouts or multiple function switches. There're two on-off buttons;one for white LEDs, one for red LEDs. There is no 'momentary on' but there's a 'momentary off' if you need to signal. With one of the lights 'on' you can slightly depress the button to momentarily turn it off. The white light is bright enough to blind someone before they can reach you and the heft can put a hurt on someone if you used it as a club or kubaton. The downside, if you're looking for one, is you cannot focus the beam to spot and if you want a dimmer beam option, this is not the light for you. But if you want a good, general purpose light that excels as a night light for walking or hunting, this is definitely the one for you. As a bonus, it runs on common AAA batteries.
Customer Review: solid construction, pure beam, could use strap Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought this for astronomy after I lost the red rubber lens cap to a halogen flashlight about the same size and I wanted something more permanent.
Compare this beam to a standard bright xenon and you'll see this has a diffused white light that casts a well dispersed and white beam which is good for working on taking down a scope right in front of me and seeing a wider area. This also means the night vision works well because the red light is not clumped up in the center of the beam. Another plus for astronomy is the grooved ring around the flashlight. This allows me to set the light down and not worry about it rolling away in the dark.
This light is well constructed, solid in your hand with the ability to grip firmly to the rubberized handle. The switches turn on and off cleanly and I doubt they'll break anytime soon.
The only con is the somewhat bulky and kind of useless holster for the light. It has a very snug fit -- almost too snug, and it's fairly cumbersome. This flashlight could have used a small loop on the end of it to insert either a wrist cord or some other kind of hook that could easily clip to a belt.
If you're buying this for long distance brightness, then this probably won't do the trick. They make a line of LED/Xenon lights just because LED doesn't focus as far and may probably seem dimmer.
Customer Review: Great flashlight Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This flashlight seems well-sized for its capability, gives a positive grip and is comfortable in the hand. The placement of the two buttons allows for easy distinction without looking and the fact that there are two buttons is a nice feature.
The flashlight seems well constructed and durable, not a cheap plastic flashlight that's going to break on you.
Some people complain that the beam isn't super focused/ doesn't project very far. While this is true (it's a nice bright beam, but it's not going to light things up at 200 yards), I'd argue that this right really isn't intended for long distance use like that. If it was, it wouldn't be well suited for using indoors and at close ranges, because it would be too bright or too narrow. But yes, it's not a very long distance flashlight, but still sufficient for moderate range outdoor use.
The presence of the red LEDs is a major plus, both for night/dim use and because of how much more they get out of the battery. That's another major plus: 30 hours on white and 80 hours on red, now that's some battery life (especially for 3 AAAs). I wish there was a way to turn on just one of the 3 red LEDs, for very low light use, but that's not a mark against the flashlight.
I'd highly recommend this as a good medium size, average application flashlight.
Customer Review: Good light Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Great little light for the price. The end cap has a nice fine threads and a rubber o-ring to help seal the system. The light is a bit on the heavy side and I like that in a flashlight; it shows that there is something to it and not just metal coated plastic. The textured handle is very rough for good grip and it is big enough around that you can get a good grip on it with your whole hand. I bounced the light off of the palm of my hand fairly hard a few times on both ends and didn't flicker at all so the battery spring has a good tension inside. The brightness is good and I love the red LED's for seeing in the dark without killing your night vision. The holster is very thick and seems like it will hold up for many years to come. The only thing I don't like is that the holster does not have a plastic clip for clipping it onto your pants. I never wear a belt so I am more or less SOL with using the holster for normal use. However when flying the holster will mate up nice with a knee board. Good light at a decent price. No issues with the buttons either as some have expressed but even if they do develop an issue I can just let S&W know and they will tighten me right up.
Customer Review: Excellent Flashlight, Worth Every Penny Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I go camping occasionally and wanted a quality flashlight at a reasonable price. I wanted to keep said flashlight around the house in case of a power outage. And I wanted to switch to LED to improve battery life. Guess what? This flashlight is all this and more!
I comparison shopped at two different big-box stores but had mixed feelings about the available options and the wide variation in prices. I decided to give Amazon a try, and after sleeping on it a couple nights, ordered this flashlight. I'm glad I did!
Pros:
-Compact, but not *too* compact
-Sturdy
-Strong, clear beam
-Surprisingly helpful red beam
-Handy carrying case
Cons:
-Having to remember which button turns on the white light and which turns on the red light
-Won't incapacitate a living creature like a Maglite will
-Finding something on Amazon for 1¢ to get free shipping
I was skeptical that I would need a flashlight with white and red beams. But I quickly discovered how handy the red light is on a recent camping trip. I won't be going back to a "regular" flashlight after this. Nor will you. Highly recommended!
