Sports reviews of Smith & Wesson CK5TBS Bullseye Extreme Ops 4.1" 40% Serrated Black Tanto BladeCustomer Review: Decent knife, light weight, great value Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I own a few S&W knives, including this one. All of them have been inexpensive and been used frequently and without issue. In general, this is a decent knife - for the price, a great knife. It operates smoothly, arrived sharp, and has been sharpened a few times now and takes a edge well.
This is a good knife for general carry, in a jeans pocket or in a glove box for emergencies. While I probably wouldn't compare this to a spyderco or a benchmade knife, I have found it to very quite useful and durable, with a safe locking mechanism that has put up with use and abuse. While I am under no illusion that this knife will become a family treasure that will be handed down from generation to generation, I don't really believe that a $100+ knife would be more valuable to me - and I carry a knife most days, camp and spend time outdoors often, and open plenty of amazon shipments to my home with this knife. The knife opens easily, operation of the thumb stud for opening it and the lock mechanism is intuitive and works smoothly. The blade hasn't chipped or bent, and the construction overall seems pretty good.
I am always amazed at the 1 star reviews on Amazon - probably the most entertaining ones to read - which call out design or materials issues that the reviewer has discovered that makes a product "completely useless", "trash", etc... I saw a few of those for this knife, with critical comparisons to $100+ knives. The fact of life is that you generally get what you pay for (or less), and this is a fair deal for a decent, useful knife that for regular people seems fine. If you are a soldier of fortune (or wannabe), perhaps investing more would make sense. I'm likely to lose this before it has any performance issues, and will feel better about the loss than if I spend a few hundred on it.
Definitely recommended.
Customer Review: Great for the price Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Considering the price of this knife, it's a good deal. The action is easy for me to open the knife with one hand using my thumb, even with the knife fully closed, I had no need to "prime" it by opening it a bit first. Action was smooth, and the lock was solid. It's light weight but still feels pretty solid for something this small and inexpensive.
Edge is pretty good out of the box, but if you're knife person like me, you'll do some sharpening of your own.
Easily fits in a pocket, any pocket, without being too bulky and noticeable.
Belt clip is VERY tight, so while it can be a bit of a pain to get it over the seam in the edge of a jean pocket, for instance, it's worth the extra effort since you know it won't come off until you WANT it to come off.
Each side cover piece is held on by four tiny torx tip screws, with one larger torx tip on each side of the hinge, and three small torx tip screws holding the clip on the side.
Another good thing I like is that when you close it, there's not enough tension to snap the blade back in until it's nearly closed. I never liked the ones that will start going on their own when still 30 to 40% opened.
The X pattern on the handle does give it a good feel and keep it from sliding around in your hand, and happily, the belt clip, if you're right handed, fits well inside the hand by the inside of the knuckles / first bone in the fingers.
Something tells me this little thing is going to get a lot of use.
If it were more expensive I wouldn't give it five stars, since I'd have a different level of expectations then, but for something this inexpensive, it just can't be beat.
Customer Review: Best $10 you can ever spend!! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
*Compared between Extreme Ops and Special Tactical*
Balance:
E.O. - Weight of knife is even balanced
S.T. - Weight is forced on knife
Both weigh around same
Handle:
E.O. - All metal but nice grip yet if you sweat it seems it would slip around in your hand
S.T. - Made of harden resin rubber and makes it hard to lose grip even if someone was trying to take it they couldn't, the E.O. could
Flick Resistance/Nylon Bushings:
E.O. - It takes more push on the thumb screw but swing out faster then the S.T.
S.T. - Swings out with easy but slow if you want it fast you can loosen the main screw but too much the nylon bushings with wiggle
Size:
E.O. - Is shorter on the blade by less then a cm and the handle around half an inch but all in all it don't seem to short.
S.T. - is longer but only because the handle is longer then the blade unlike the E.O. thats the exact size.
Last specs:
Belt Clip- E.O. wins more spring clamp force
Handle- E.O. looks cooler to me
Lock Position- E.O. like review say you should bend it back more bc its very stiff
Blades- both last just ceramic them once a month and they stay sharp!
All in all they both have flaws but both Smith & Wessons are darn good knifes. So even if these were over $20 you wouldn't be wasting your money. But remember its not a bowie knife don't think it wont break so use it with care and it wont ever let you down! *Uploaded Pics as well*
Customer Review: Great pocket knife Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Guess mine was made on a Tuesday or Wensday, holding up fine for now. Overall design good, like the fingerholes on sides of knife great gripping action. It's about 1 1/8" at its widest point, fits in pocket comfortably. Closed it's about 4 1/8" L and opened just under 7 1/2" L. The thumbstud took some getting use to, as my other S&W rescue knife has a top of blade flat circle thumb release. It works, but is positioned in tight area and is hard to open with left hand, as belt clip is in the way. For a $10 pocket knife it's pretty good, but compaired to my $12 S&W Rescue knife there are major quality issues, so don't compaire it to other knifes!! It's a nice weight not too light not too heavy, great for minor tasks. For a modern style knife its pretty good design, for heavy or extreme use, you can always go back to the big, heavy, clunk but good ole fashion Buck knives of our youths! Overall- I'm satisfied with my knife. Just read reviews and match not only price but your usage needs and you find the right fit of knife for yourself!
Pros: good weight/ balance
great pocket knife
finger holes are helpful
blade was sharp right out of box
cons: position of thumstud more for right handed use
plastic knife pivot- bad design flaw
black wears off under heavy use
Suggestion- Smith's PP1 pocket pal sharpener works great with this knife, for both edges
Customer Review: Useful Inexpensive Knife Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I was very pleasantly surprised by this knife. I have seen some horrible knives for around this same price point. This one is head and shoulders above those.
Few knives come very sharp from the factory, but this one did. In fact, I was stunned at it's sharpness out of the box. It also seems to hold it's edge well. I have whittled several different types of wood, cut both green and dead sticks, and even used it to baton a couple narrow diameter pieces in half to make tinder. Even after batoning (which isn't really recommended for folders), the lock seems sturdy, and the blade is not loose, at all.
The grip fits comfortably in my hand for such a small knife, and I have large hands. The clip is very sturdy; mine is actually too sturdy, at the moment, but I suspect it will loosen a bit over time.
The thumb studs are on both sides, so the opening mechanism can be used by lefties. Also, as with so many knives, the serrations would actually work better for left-handed use, as they're on the "presentation" side of the blade. They'll slide a bit, if used for shaving something when used by a right-hander, but this is fairly common, so I didn't detract any stars for it.
This knife will get more use because of its price, and it will do what you want it to, if your expectations are reasonable. It's a great buy for every day carry.
