Customer Review: Great budget knife with 440C stainless blade in tanto shape
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is a really great knife for daily carry purposes. The workmanship is quite good for a liner lock and it even has nice touches like plastic washers between the blade and handle. Makes for very smooth and easy operation when opening and closing it.

The blade is made of 440C stainless which is a much nicer metal than the 440A blades I've owned. The knife came out of the box ready to shave arm hair with and takes little effort to make the edge even sharper. It slices paper, cardboard, plastic wrapping, and other such items like it's nothing.

The clip sits a bit low on the knife; below the hinge joint. So the knife sticks out of my pocket more than my Gerber Evo Jr. does. However, it's actually kind of nice. Makes the knife easier to get out of my pocket to do work with. Makes it more accessible and usable at the cost of a tad bit less discretion in public. The clip is removable as well via 3 torx screws.

The liner lock portion locks up securely, even when creeping the blade open. So no problems there.

Some of my old liner locks didn't hold their blades closed -- the blades would sometimes open a tad bit in my pocket. This knife has a subtle blade hold-in indention on the blade and liner lock strip. So when the blade is pushed closed, it is held in place ever so slightly. It has enough tension to prevent accidental openings but not enough to make opening it on purpose a problem.

The knurled handle patterning combined with the drilled holes allow for a very secure grip. The knife as a whole weighs much less than I thought it would. The handle is lightweight and balanced well with the blade's weight.

Smith and Wesson did a great job on this model by creating an inexpensive liner lock knife that feels solid, sharpens extremely well, has a solid lockup on the liner, is lightweight, and very affordable. It's a shame I saw this knife after buying a Gerber Evo Jr. They sold for roughly the same price at the stores I bought them at and the S&W CK5TBS has much better metal in the blade. I like my knives to stay sharp and so far this one excels at that job.

Customer Review: Another Impressive and Affordable Knife
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I have been a Smith and Wesson knife fan since my first SWAT years ago. I since have owned multiple Smith and Wesson Knives and been happy with all of them (I get new ones just because I'm a bit of collector, not that they break).

I use this knife as EDC (Every Day Carry) knife and it has been used regularly for the last 3 months. To begin, this knife is just plane slick looking. The crossed textured handle with circular cut-outs, black blade, serrated edge, and tanto style blade give this knife a great look. However I'd rather have an ugly effective tool than a beautiful worthless blade, luckily you get both with this knife. I don't want to go to far into specific details because this is a such a highly reviewed knife I'd simply be repeating details, so I'll try and just hit some high points that I like about it.

* Blade fits my hand well
* Well designed thumb stud makes for very easy one hand deployment
* No issues with locking mechanism like some have had, am easily able to close with one hand as well
* Clip is very well made
* Blade holds a decent edge, like all knives it will become dull with daily use, but it has held a good edge for a long time
* The price! I have more expensive blades but don't carry them, I'd much rather loose or break a $10 knife than a $50+ knife. Not that I think this knife will break any time soon, but my heart won't be broken if it does.

Negatives
* Poor jimping- Jimping refers to the notches cut into the back rear side of the blade for thumb control of the knife. If you look at some of the pictures you'll see it's almost level with the blade. It's not the worst jimping I've ever seen, but not the best either.
*Minor Minor detail - I've always laughed at the names of S&W knives, SWAT, Special Ops, Homeland Security, and of course Extreme Ops. I feel like the names need to be said in a very dramatic action movie voice. It seems like the names add a level of novelty to a quality knife, but this doesn't really effect the knife one bit.

Simple answer, need a pocket knife, this will get the job done!

Customer Review: it's rapidly growing on me
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I'd never had one of these liner lock knives before & when I saw this one for the price on here while researching the Victorinox knife I also purchased (Farmer's pocketknife, excellent!) I figured I'd try it, what could another letter opener hurt.

Well, it hurt me! First time I opened the blade it didn't lock and I didn't realize it and closed the serrated part a little on my finger like an idiot. Yes, it's very sharp! After playing with it some more, the lock seemed so stiff that I was thinking of returning it, there was no way it could be operated one-handed.

However, playing with it some more, I tried flicking the blade open. I was able to do this easily even with it fully closed (another customer mentions flicking it open from a partially opened position, but I've had good luck doing it with the knife fully closed.). The blade easily locked! I did this a few more times just to hear the nice locking sound it made. But then I noticed, I was able to easily open and lock the blade with one hand. I suppose the flicking sped up a breaking-in process that a few more two-handed openings would have done.

Umm, I guess I should add, if you're going to try flicking the blade open MAKE SURE YOU CAN HANG ONTO THE KNIFE. I'm a big guy with big hands and nobody was in the room with me; I wouldn't make a habit of opening a knife this way, because it only has to go wrong once when you get careless to really be a bad thing. And I'm going to be closing it with two hands just to be safe.

So now I'm fully pleased with the knife. Easy one-hand open and lock. It's got a really well-machined appearance and feel to it, seems to be well-made in every area. Feel's good in the hand, I don't think it'll get away from you any while you're cutting or sawing. It's very light, too, I could slip it in a pocket and forget it.

Overall, for this price and quality, I can only recommend it. If you're a nOOb like me to these kinds of knives however, this is no toy, it will cut you if you're a moron. So be careful, and enjoy this incredibly cheap, amazing little piece of hardware.

Customer Review: A pretty good knife so far.

I am not ordinarily a big fan of folding knives. Locking can break (linerlock), you need to fiddle with triggers and the spring can break (switchblade), why do I have to take so many movements to open this thing? (Butterfly). I am a bigger fan of fixed blades. However, as this is my first linerlock which I have pretty much just taken out of the box, I have a few opening thoughts.
First reason I got it was the insanely low cost. $11 for a knife made by a generally reputable company is a steal. I have a few Gerbers that my father got while he was in the Army 20 or so years ago. When I decided to look around for a knife for me to carry where ever I go that has a little more substance than my keychain multitool, Gerber was the first place I looked. $200 for a knife? I don't have that kind of money and even if I did, why would I spend $200 on something I could get of similar quality at a much lower price? Besides, I was getting my first linerlock (Keep in mind I used to find these confusing. Only a year ago, I asked a person who showed me his "How do I close it?") and I wasn't about to splurge a lot of money on something that I wasn't sure I trusted but more money than a $5 knife from a company that has a bit of a sketchy reputation.
The size is perfect for an everyday carry or any other use. Fits very well into the pocket for a blade that is that long.
The lock seems sturdy and has absolutely no wiggle.
The blade came out of the box satisfactorily sharp and the black modernized tanto blade gives it a good, sturdy design while looking (a very minimal requirement) slick.
The screws that hold it together seem to have a bit of paint chipped off of them, though this hasn't been a problem so far.
All in all, I am very happy with my purchase. Knife of good quality with a price that gives you the confidence to use it rather than leaving it in a sterile box, afraid to break it.

I do have a question for knife buyers more experienced than I. When not using the knife (including carry), is it better to store it with the blade opened or closed?

Customer Review: AMAZING AMAZING KNIFE!!!!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Smith & Wesson has become, by far, one of my absolute favorite companies. EVERY product I have bought that carries their name has been of the utmost quality. Now I bought this knife when Amazon.com itself sold the knife. It was $10 and quite honestly about the best $10 I have ever spent. This knife is worth far more than that $10 or this $14 or even the intended price of $17. It is a smaller knife, but does it ever get the job done!! I'm cuttin open all sorts of things all day long and this knife has stood up to the test each and every time. I have it's bigger brother -- the Smith & Wesson SWATLB Large Assisted Opening Knife, Black, and even though I got it for just $40 I use it as my luxury knife. The smaller Extreme Ops knife is what I use to do all my dirty work -- and believe me it can hold its own! I do recommend though that if you use knives a lot or are just a big knife fan, you buy the larger SWAT knife w/the assisted opening before Amazon runs out of stock on that one as well and you're forced to pay a much higher price for it. These are HIGH QUALITY knives and unless you want to be a nay-saying little whiner, you will not be disappointed.

***UPDATE***
I just read a review written by someone who gave this product a single star and I'd like to mention that I feel his comments to be severely biased as he received a defective knife. He claims his knife broke possibly because he flicked it open and I'd like to mention that I open my knife by flicking it each and every time and that's about 50-100 times a day. It swings open effortlessly without fail and locks itself in place nice and tight. And when the time comes to close it I simply push the locking mechanism over to the left and fold it up. There's certainly no need to use two fingers or a box cutter to pry it. He has a defective knife and that happens sometimes. But this is a VERY high quality knife for this price range and is well constructed and very easy to work with. The other 60+ positive reviews will back my claim up.
