Today, the SIGG bottle has acquired cult status. What happened is a success story that started in Biel, Switzerland in 1908. Küng, Sigg & Cie. manufactured leisure goods, kitchenware, and electrical appliances. The company relocated to Frauenfeld in 1916, where it helped pioneer the legendary tradition of Swiss quality. Since 1998, SIGG has concentrated on its core business: drinking bottles that deliver ultimate customer benefit. Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Can Sigg bottles be used for boiling water? A: No. Strong heat can damage the outer coating. Q: Can dents in the bottle damage the Sigg bottle's inner coating? A: No, the Sigg inner coating is highly elastic. Dents cannot crack or chip the internal lining and the Sigg bottle remains perfectly usable. Q: Can I use my Sigg bottle for carbonated drinks? A: Yes, all Sigg bottle tops provide a 100 percent seal and will not leak. It's recommended that you fill the bottle no further than 1/2-inch below the lip. And before taking a drink, relieve the pressure inside the bottle by gently rotating the entire top. Q: Are Sigg bottles dishwasher safe? A: Yes, but because of the narrow mouth of the bottle, hand washing is recommended. Q: Can a Sigg bottle be placed in the freezer A: No, as this may cause the bottle to crack. However, the bottle can be chilled in the refrigerator.
Sports reviews of Sigg Lifestyle Loop Top Water Bottle (1.0-Liters)Customer Review: Nice looking. VERY fragile. Sport shop rating: 2 Stars
This is a beautiful bottle. The mouth of it fits my mouth great. However, it's so fragile. You've read the reviews of people frustrated by how easily this dents if you drop it. I don't care if I have some dents. But, I had my hands full the other day, and I dropped my water bottle on the sidewalk from waist level. The drop pierced the bottle, and now it leaks. It's garbage now. A $25 water bottle should stand up to more than that.
Customer Review: Even Patagonia Dropped Them Sport shop rating: 1 Stars
When I found out about the BPA deception from SIGG, I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. I went ahead and shipped back my old bottles to SIGG, at my cost, for an exchange. I have friends who just threw their bottles away because of their distrust of SIGG. Over a month later, I received an e-mail with a gift code to order replacements. The replacement order and customer service was a fiasco. It took several e-mails, phone calls, and over 3 weeks to resolve.
If you aren't aware of the scandal, all SIGG bottles before August of 2008 have BPA liners. When SIGG was asked during that time, if their bottles or liners contained BPA, SIGG reps carefully worded their response to assure the public that their bottles did not. It wasn't until SIGG quietly released their new liners and an investigative report revealed their lie, did SIGG finally come clean. Patagonia, the outdoor company, was lied to in their face by SIGG. Patagonia was so upset by SIGG's deceit, that they returned ALL SIGG bottles, including ones with the new liners, back to SIGG to be recycled.
Not only are SIGG bottles not as safe as everyone thought (including Oprah), but the company itself has burned the trust of consumers and retail partners with their deception. Fortunately for us, real BPA-free alternatives do exist. I personally own 2 Camelbak plastic bottles that use the Tritan material, which is BPA-free. If you want metal bottles, Camelbak makes them with medical grade stainless steel. Klean Kanteen also uses medical grade stainless steel but does contain nickel and is also made in China, which apparently a lot of people have a problem with. Personally, I'll be trying the Klean Kanteen bottles soon.
Knowing what we know now, I cannot imagine anyone trusting this brand or company again. I certainly am through being a supporter and customer. If you want more information, feel free to Google "SIGG BPA" and you'll be inundated with negative press. The number of articles speaks volumes of the outrage SIGG has caused. Be safe everyone!
Customer Review: BPA-free? No way! Sport shop rating: 1 Stars
I purchased two of these Sigg bottles prior to 2009 and am a bit distraught that they contain BPA - especially when they were touted as BPA-free! To add insult to injury, Good Housekeeping even recommends a Sigg bottle in a test of BPA-free water bottles (see Sigg Lifestyle Water Bottles with Active Top, 0.6-liter ($22) or 1-liter ($25) http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-testing/reviews-tests/green-products/best-reusable-water-bottles), when the comment "test performed on behalf of the manufacturer showed that when water is kept in the bottle, no BPA migrates from the bottle or liner into the water" indicates that there is BPA present in the bottle!
Can someone please explain to me what type of BPA-free water bottles have BPA in them?
Since Sigg was recently found to have knowingly lied in the first place about the BPA in their bottles (http://safemama.com/2009/08/28/your-sigg-bottle-may-contain-bpa/) I would have assumed that GH would not be so quick to recommend a Sigg product.
Additionally, another GH article (http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-testing/reviews-tests/childrens-toys/best-thermos-containers?click=main_sr) recommends a BPA-laden Sigg thermos bottle for children and even suggest they are good for keeping hot liquids.
I am going to see if Sigg will take these bottles back.
Customer Review: Not good Sport shop rating: 1 Stars
The gray bottle did not come with the BPA-free label that other bottles came with, and I suspected that perhaps it was not (based on other reviewers' comments). I opened it and sniffed the inside of it, and it had an extremely pungent chemical smell. Sending it back, because I can't trust that it is BPA-free. I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and I can't risk getting sick. Disappointed that a bottle this expensive is so unreliable.
The blue bottle was not as depicted here. When I received it, my husband and I both thought it looked like the finish was defective. It looked all "scratched up." Based on the photo here, I expected it to be a nice clear blue color. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to look like that, or if the finish was defective. But for such an expensive bottle, I wasn't about to keep it and find out a month later that it was defective when the finish started chipping off. Based on other reviews here, I wasn't taking the chance with my own pocketbook.
Sent both of them back.
Customer Review: Poor qualities overshadowed by good design Sport shop rating: 1 Stars
I bought two bottles through sigg--1L bottles. I was initially liking the first one, but it dented VERY easily. I bought the same bottle in a different color after losing it and the dents showed even more. Then I started reading about aluminum concerns (just didn't pay that much attention before buying) and SIGG's unwillingness to distribute information about their liners (there is reason for this), especially since they had BPA's in their liner's before and weren't disclosing that info. On top of that, my cap leaked and I tried to get it fixed. They told me my cap "appeared" to be missing some threads... but that is the proper cap that they sell, then they sent me a new one which was for a completely different bottle. It did fit, but it was a different color. When I complained he reassured me that it in fact was not gray, like I suggested, but black, like my other one. Idiot. I will not buy from SIGG again, wish I could return the one I have now--but of course it shows signs of "use," since it dents so easily.
