Today, the SIGG bottle has acquired cult status. What happened is a success story that started in Biel, Switzerland in 1908. Küng, Sigg & Cie. manufactured leisure goods, kitchenware, and electrical appliances. The company relocated to Frauenfeld in 1916, where it helped pioneer the legendary tradition of Swiss quality. Since 1998, SIGG has concentrated on its core business: drinking bottles that deliver ultimate customer benefit. Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Can Sigg bottles be used for boiling water? A: No. Strong heat can damage the outer coating. Q: Can dents in the bottle damage the Sigg bottle's inner coating? A: No, the Sigg inner coating is highly elastic. Dents cannot crack or chip the internal lining and the Sigg bottle remains perfectly usable. Q: Can I use my Sigg bottle for carbonated drinks? A: Yes, all Sigg bottle tops provide a 100 percent seal and will not leak. It's recommended that you fill the bottle no further than 1/2-inch below the lip. And before taking a drink, relieve the pressure inside the bottle by gently rotating the entire top. Q: Are Sigg bottles dishwasher safe? A: Yes, but because of the narrow mouth of the bottle, hand washing is recommended. Q: Can a Sigg bottle be placed in the freezer A: No, as this may cause the bottle to crack. However, the bottle can be chilled in the refrigerator.
Sports reviews of Sigg Lifestyle Loop Top Water Bottle (1.0-Liters)Customer Review: Color me unimpressed.. Sport shop rating: 2 Stars
I've been going on and off of a water only drink regimen for months now. Since starting to pack my husband lunch everyday, I've made him take one Nalgene 1lt bottle to work everyday. The night before, I put it in the freezer to freeze filtered water, then in the morning, fill the rest with filtered water...giving him cold water until 2ish. It's gotten him to like drinking water so much that he ends up refilling his Nalgene bottle at least one other time.
I say all this to say, we'd grown out of the 2 Nalgene bottles I had. So I went searching for something other than the bottles we had. Both were wide mouth bottles. This presented a problem. Since I'd freeze water, when it started to defrost and come loose, when drinking a solid mass of ice would come barreling towards the opening leading to a watery mess. This happened to my husband in a few meetings.
So then I tried a narrow mouth Nalgene bottle. This solved the previous problem, but we found it was hard to clean. Also we would have to smash ice cubes into it if we forgot to freeze water the night before, which after filling with 15 ice cubes or so, would leave a sore palm.
Though this bottle also has a narrow mouth, I figured we'd give it a shot. I still have the same complaints about cleaning, but this metal (aluminum?) bottle presents a whole host of new issues for me.
* First, it's barely 1lt. This is must be figured by filling the bottle to the very brim. Comparably, if you fill a Nalgene 1lt bottle to its brim, it could come very close to 38oz.
* Second, it's no where near as durable as my Nalgene bottle. I can take my Nalgene bottle and bang it against a sidewalk to break up ice without a second thought. I dropped this Sigg bottle on my tiled kitchen floor, and it has a dent! Forget about banging it against a sidewalk.
* Third, the paint is cheesy. It feels like regular latex. I'm not going to test my theory, but I do believe if I got one breach in the paint, I could peel it away. This bottle could surprise me, but that's the impression I get from paint.
* Fourth, the metal radiates the cold. This doesn't happen with my Nalgene. So, if the bottom half of the bottle contains frozen water, the outside top half of the bottle will be cold...this doesn't necessarily mean the water in the top half will be cold.
But I supposed it's fashionable. I got the camo Sigg.
If you don't have an aversion to plastic, I'd still recommend the Nalgene for a rugged water bottle.
## I just read the FAQ and discovered the manufacturer recommends not freezing the bottle. I've already frozen it twice.
So to recap, I can't drop it, I can't freeze it, I can't scratch it, and if lost in the wilderness I can't use it to boil water.
Customer Review: Dents easily, rubber lining got moldy Sport shop rating: 2 Stars
I bought this bottle for myself and a 1.5 liter bottle for my husband in 2008. His bottle is still ok, because he hasn't used it much. Mine has been taken to the dump last year.
I originally bought it to avoid buying any more plastic bottles. At the time when I was buying it, I was also considering Kleen Kanteen, but Sigg won me over with their designs. There was a discussion about their lining and I still don't know whether it is ok or not. I actively used my bottle for a little less than a year and then I used it occasionally. By the time it was 7 months old, it looked like it was in a war zone. It had dents all over it. Pretty much any time I dropped in on a hard surface it got a new dent. What forced me to throw it away at the end is mold that got all over the rubber lining the lid. It was impossible to wash it off. There was also some mold around the opening of the bottle. With the wide variety of new plastic BPA free bottles that are currently on the market, I no longer see a reason to spend $20 on Sigg bottles. Especially considering that the don't last very long.
Customer Review: Not the best option for the mountains! Sport shop rating: 2 Stars
Like many other people I was romanced by the Sigg bottle. The BPA scare allowed this company (and other metal bottle manufacturers) to skyrocket. They appear to be of high quality and look nice. They are made in Switzerland by a relatively small company and seem to have pretty good ethics. All that being said, Sigg bottles are wimpy! They dent if you set them down on a rock and they will explode if frozen. My bottle cracked in half after leaving it in my car on a very cold night! Additionally, they get too hot and too cold. If you are thinking about getting one for mountaineering or long adventures, think again. Save your hard-earned money and buy a good old classic Nalgene-type bottle (or reuse a Gatorade bottle). I'm serious! Leave the Sigg for the train ride home or the yoga studio where other people can see that you have a nice, metal, environmentally-friendly bottle (as long as its not freezing). Start worrying about the BPA in all of the food products you buy instead.
Customer Review: Do NOT buy these Sigg bottles Sport shop rating: 2 Stars
I compared them with Klean Kanteen and went with Sigg. Why? Honestly, because they were just so much more appealing to look at than Klean. I regret it. I've read they do not include BPA anymore, but that doesn't remove the fact that once this liner peels off, as it did with mine in 2 days, you have aluminum to worry about. Read about the diseases associated with aluminum ingestion. This is my second bottle in 2 weeks as my initial order's bottle had a weird plastic taste to it and already the liner is peeling at the opening. Returning both and going with who I should have went with first, Klean Kanteen. I just wish they didn't manufacture in China.
Customer Review: Not very sturdy Sport shop rating: 2 Stars
I bought a 1 L waterbottle and within 3 days dropped it on a carpeted floor, and it got a huge dent. It's since gotten another dent. I don't care about aesthetics, but I am afraid that the enamel will eventually come off (or the volume will be much less than 1 L because of all the dents into the bottle). I was very disappointed, since this is such an expensive waterbottle. On the other hand - it doesn't have any "taste" at all, and it seems to have a good seal - it doesn't leak like Nalgene does. If only I could be sure it's going to LAST more than a few weeks... I'm a bit afraid to take it out on the trail, which is what it's made for, right?
