By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips. Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home. Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.
Sports reviews of Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer [Discontinued]Customer Review: Good Machine for the Price Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I purchased this recently and just got it. Its overwhelming at 1st all the parts and the pieces. I live in an upstairs condo and was really worried about getting it up the stairs but someone suggested taking it out of the box and carry it up in pieces. That was the best idea. We had to make a few more trips but it was so easy. Granted the main piece and biggest piece are still heavy but it was a great idea.
I am female and it took me about 2 1/2 hours to put it together. I esp had some trouble with one of the bolts on the Right Handle. Not sure what the deal was.
I felt the pieces (ie the bolts) could have been labeled a little differently. They weren't labeled exactly how they were listed in the assembly manual. But I managed.
I too had trouble with the squeaking. But I got back online and reviewed the reviews and did what they said and loosened the bolds on the arms that are connected to the piece that goes through the mast and that seemed to take care of it. However I haven't offically used it for longer than 15 mins yet so I have yet to test it out fully. But it seem to make the squeak within a min or two and its not doing it now.
I am amazed how quickly it gets your heartrate up. So I think this machine will provide a great cardio workout can't wait to put it to the test. But so far very pleased.
I would recommend the mat for underneth it. It helps even for just moving the machine if need be.
Customer Review: Day 1 & Day 180 Review. All good. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I have a very expensive commercial recumbent bike. I had 2 consumer recumbent bikes in the past and I wore both out. So, knowing my experiences with cheaper equipment, I went out to buy a commercial elliptical now that I want more of a workout. After spending weeks trying to decide between spending 3k or $599 I went with Amazon and $599. So far, so good.
ABF delivered as promised. Driver was very nice and brought the 430 in to my 1-story house to the spot where I wanted it.
Assembly went well. I'm very impatient when putting something like this together, but it was easy. All pieces fit. Everything was easily identified. Schwinn even put blue paint on the few bolts/screws that are slightly longer than the majority of the bolts/screws, so you won't get mixed up.
As far as usage goes. I've used it one time so far for 20 minutes and it is quiet. I'm expecting it to make some noise as I put more miles on it. But, that's ok. While I would expect a 3k elliptical to remain quiet for years, I would expect some noise with a $599 elliptical.
Bottom line. The 430 fit and finish is good. It feels solid with my 200lbs on it. It is quiet so far. I'm happy.
Day 180(or so). Still quiet. Still solid. I use this thing 3 times a week. Great value. I can still highly recommend it.
UPDATE 12/16/10: Had this now for 2.5 years and all is still good. Rock solid.
Customer Review: Feel the Burn! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
After WEEKS of reviewing ellipticals online and trying them out at my local Sears store, I settled on the Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer. Schwinn has been making quality exercise equipment forever. I can vouch for this because my parents still ride their 1980's Scwinn Air bike religiously. Plus the parent company is actually Nautilus. So I figured I couldn't go wrong.
Delivery was set up and delivered via Eagle USA. They called and set up a time and date that was convinient for me. The delivery guy even brought the box inside. The box itself was a little banged up and VERY dirty. About 4 hours later, (and a few cuss words here and there) I had one great machine!
I have only had this machine for a little over one week, but so far it has kicked my [...], but in a pleasant way. I can definitely feel the burn in all my major muscle groups. The ride is smooth and impact-free (which is why I sold my treadmill and bought this) and VERY quiet. The console LCD offers a variety of programs which are simple to follow if you are up for a challenge or just a stroll. The only "drawback" is that the LCD is not backlit, but who works out in the dark?
All in all this is a well built machine. It feels very sturdy on my hardwood floors and I haven't heard any squeaks as of yet. I am very pleased and recommend this product to anyone who wants a thorough work out. The best part was the price of [...]and FREE SHIPPING!
Customer Review: Love My 430 Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
After doing lots of research and reading tons of read reviews I decided to buy the Schwinn 430 inspite of numerous complains about squeaking sounds, misaligned bolt holes, missing parts, etc. My experience does not include any of those issues. I got delivery 3 days ahead of estimated delivery date with all items received complete and in good condition. Took my wife and me an hour and a half by carefully following the directions. We did not experience any misaligned bolt holes. I suspect that those complaining of squeaks did not follow the instructions warning to not fully tighten the bolt at each step until all bolts are in place. Several times I didn't remember that and guess what, the last bolt didn't fit. As for squeaks, I followed the recommendation of one reviewer and lubricated each bushing with lythium grease-- so much for any squeaks. I did get a clicking noise on the left side after about 5 minutes the first time I used the 430. I retighted the bolts connecting the machine to the two front legs and the clicking disappeared. Obviously, the initial use had allowed the brackets to settle into place creating a little play between the metal parts. Other reviews have noted that the display is hard to see without a backlight, but that didn't seem to be an issue for us. All in all we are impressed with the 430. It is sturdy, quiet, well engineered and value priced at $599 with free shipping.
Customer Review: Perfect for the home gym. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I was so very skeptical about buying a piece of equipment that's been altered for use at home. But after wrestling it out of it's packaging (which was a feat in and of itself), putting it together was a breeze. Seriously. I was dreading it, but it went together like a charm.
And using it was such an unexpected pleasure! The 'action' on it was like the commercial ones you'd find in a real gym - it was smooth, there were no 'hitches' or 'bumps' that I was expecting. The digital readout panel was actually better than the one that I was used to at the gym. There is also a way to check your 'recovery', meaning, how quickly your heart rate returns to normal after a workout, and it grades you so you can keep track of the improvements to your cardiovascular health.
It doesn't take up much room, it's pleasant to look at, and delightful to use. I would recommend this machine to anyone looking for a piece of cardio equipment for their home. I would've expected to pay nearly double for what I did. In addition to singing its accolades, above, it didn't put much of a dent in the ol' wallet, either.
I did tons of research in consumer reports before I made the plunge in purchasing an elliptical, and all roads led back to this machine. So I'm saving you the time and trouble for your research. Get yourself one of these, you'll be so happy that you did!
