About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

Sports reviews of Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer [Discontinued]

Customer Review: Very Sturdy Elliptical - Love it
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

After shopping around for a long time me and my wife decided to by this elliptical. We were really skeptical because we were buying online but its totally worth it. I have owned this machine for 2 months now and I must say that I am impressed.
Schwinn is a class company and is a part of Nautilus which supplies most of the gym equipment to the big boys like LA fitness, Ballys etc. We shopped and tried most of the elliptical brands like Proform, Reebok, Horizon etc but nothing is as good as Schwinn. Me and my wife were able to put this together in 2 hrs. I think thats great!!!

When me and my wife were looking around for an exercise machine we were mainly looking for something that was as good as we have in a Gym. Most of the ones in the gym cost around $2500 .. which is ridiculous... and since the bar was set so high we had to shop around for a while and Schwinn 430 was our answer. I think its sturdier than most of the exercise mahines in the gym and its affordable got it for $599 on amazon + free shipping.

Pros:
Very Sturdy, A lot of program options, Smooth, no noise, No battery required,
Affordable(when compared to other high end ones), Ultimate performance, 1 year warranty on parts(most of the other companies give 3 months only), decently compact.

Cons:
Manual that is supplied is not too clear about the instructions (you will still be able to figure out the instructions though)
No Backlight on the exercise monitor screen(not a major issue)
If you are over 250 pounds, it may be a little wobly.

Customer Review: Finally - an exercise machine that works for me
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I've had different exercise machines over the years. I'm mainly interested in a cardio workout. I've walked, biked and swam. My last machine was a Schwinn recumbent bike. On my morning walks I noticed a guy working out on his elliptical trainer in his garage. I eventually got to know him and he sold me on the benefits of an elliptical trainer. My recumbent bike was causing a knee problem. He had a $2300 machine. I don't spend that kind of money on an exercise machine. I did my research and came up with the Schwinn 430. I found a place which sold elliptical trainers, one being the Schwinn 480 - cost $800 + tax. I took my neighbor and we tried out all the elliptical trainers they had. He agreed that the 430 was the best bang for the buck of all the machines there and it was not that inferior to his $2300 machine. No problems with assembly. I've been using it for about 3 months and am extremely happy. My knee problem went away, possibly because I'm building up the muscles around the knee on this machine. I've had foot problems (plantar fasciitis) which would occasionally show up with too much walking. That hasn't been a problem at all on this machine. So I've finally got an exercise machine that gives me a good cardio workout without any resulting pain. Mercantila also sells the machine for $599 and free shipping. I found a coupon on the internet good for $30 bringing the cost to $569. As you deal with Schwinn customer service, which I've done with the recumbent bike and they are good, it probably doesn't matter whether you get it from Mercantila or Amazon. Good luck.

We ordered the 430 and it arrived today. I recommend ordering through mercantila, by entering the code "WALLETBUDDY" at checkout, you save 5% ($30), bringing their price (w/free shipping and no tax outside CA) to $570.

The unit took less than two hours for me and my wife to set up. All went well and no pieces were missing. Beware of the pre-lubricated parts, though, so that you don't get grease on your clothes. The box is also quite heavy, so you may want to open it up and bring the parts in separately.

The unit is extremely quiet. It makes almost no sound at all. You could listen to music or TV at normal volume.

I'm 6'2" and the unit seems well sized for me, without any "heel lift." My wife, on the other hand, is 5', and it is not so easy for her to use the arm attachments. She experiences a bit of "heel lift." It would be better if the stride length were adjustable.

For the price, the unit seems well manufactured. Also, the unit has a smaller footprint than I thought it would, which is good since we live in an apt.

It would have been nice if the unit came with a mat. We've slid the unit around on our hardwood floors without scratching them, but I believe that including a mat would have been a nice extra. In this price range, though, I shouldn't expect it.

The computer display and options are pretty basic, but it has a heart rate monitor, though I'm not sure how accurate it is, since we've only had the product for one day. I'll update if I notice anything important.

Customer Review: We love the Schwinn 430
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

We've had our 430 for 3 months now - our first piece of exercise equipment. Wanted to get something to keep us active for the winter months when we're inside a lot more. We're in our 50's, I'm 5'8 and 150, my husband is 6' and 225 pounds, and it seems to work well for both of us. We finally bought real trainer shoes, which helped with a little bit of foot numbness we had getting on it in socks. We got the pad, which is nice to keep it stable, plus nice if you spill your water, etc. 8 adjustable speeds seems like plenty, and although some may complain about backlighting on the display, that seems like a minor complaint. Assembly was pretty easy - took about an hour. We had a little squeeking, but loosening up the screws a bit took care of that. We've worked our way up from 15 minutes to 60, and I gotta tell you, being able to see how many calories you're burning up and how many miles you've gone is pretty gratifying. I found exercising with U2 or the Rolling Stones on my I-pod is a better motivator - lower resistance level for fast songs and crank it up to 8 for slow ones, or occasionally go crazy doubletime at a superfast speed. I just close my eyes and it's almost like dancing. Husband likes to watch movies, but I find it harder to get a good rhythm going with varying speeds that way. We've both lost a few pounds getting on it 4-5 times a week, and know we're getting a good cardio workout. Anyway, great price, free shipping, and once you get past 40 minutes, it's really true - you can just keep on going. Best purchase we've made in a while!

Customer Review: Can't say enough good things about the Schwinn 430
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

If you've read some of the other reviews here, you're likely already pretty convinced the Schwinn 430 is a great machine. I can't add much to the praise already posted by others, but I can certainly agree with them and tell you that I (a 45 year old woman) had NO problems putting the machine together by myself. It did take about 3 hours, but that was taking a couple breaks and a phone call in between. Just do what the manual suggests and make sure all the parts are there before you begin (they were) and lay them out in order. Then just follow the directions.

One piece of advice: When you're installing the Console Handlebar (Step 4), cover the hole in the console mast with a piece of packing tape or just tape a piece of paper over it to block it. In attaching the handlebar, I fumbled one of the screws and of course it rolled right into the console mast, which meant I had to remove six bolts in order to remove the mast to reach the screw. Fortunately it got caught on the little metal lip and didn't drop down into the main unit.

My unit is virtually SILENT - no sqeaks, clicks or any other noises. I'm pretty close to the weight limit for the 430 model and was a little apprehensive about that, but the machine doesn't feel at all wobbly - it feels quite sturdy/stable.

I spent a month researching ellipticals, reading reviews and looking at different machines and wish now I'd just gone ahead and ordered this one. I whole heartedly recommend it to anyone in the market for an elliptical trainer.
