About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

Sports reviews of Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer [Discontinued]

Customer Review: Very surprised, love it
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

We just got the Schwinn 430 Elliptical and i have to say im extremely surprised. It's awesome! My husband and i have been shopping for an elliptical for quite some time -- if you buy one from the stores, you have the luxury of seeing it ahead of time, but the markup is at least $200 more then what you can get it for on amazon. Plus, we got the free shipping on this item and it was great -- came within 5 days -- right before thanskgiving.

We love it. My husband got it together in about 2 1/2 hours -- there is a misprint on the manual - but its no big deal. All the parts we're right, the box was in good condition, the electronic display works very well and we like the little programs on it.

We didn't want a very complicated elliptical, just something heavy duty with a high weight limit on it -- and something that was professional quality that would hold up to day-to-day useage.

This elliptical is great -- its extremely sturdy -- i have a hard time tipping it purposefully. My husbands quite a bit larger then me and he's very sturdy on it as well. The weight limit on this thing is up to 300 lbs (from the manual we got) -- and it really shows. It's nicer then the ellipticals in our apartment work out room.

The other major factor we were concerned with was the footpedals. Most common complaint with any elliptical are the foot pedals breaking off... but this thing has solid steel bars under each pedal... i think they're pretty safe.

I dont think u'll be disappointed with this thing -- we love it. And for the price -- its $200 more at Sears.... plus $100 in shipping.... So we saved 300$ from amazon. Awesome

Customer Review: Great Elliptical!

I purchased the Schwinn 430 Labor Day and chose the free shipping. My husband had no problem putting it together. I gave him some review printouts that said not to tighten too much and to use white lithium grease on all of the moving parts which he did. We also took the parts out of the box and brought them to the room where he proceeded to put it together. I purchased foam interlocking pads for the machine to sit on. It is very smooth, quiet, and easy to operate. I would recommend this trainer. I use to train at a gym and decided to save that money for something else as I only used the elliptical and some weights at the gym. By having my own elliptical, I can go downstairs at 6 a.m. with no make-up, hair a mess, and not worry about how I look and use the elliptical for a half hour and do some floor exercises and then start getting ready at 7 a.m. to go to work. I also won't get the flu from someone who is working out next to me and who may be sick (at the gym). You may want to give the trucking company explicit directions to your place when they call you the day before delivery if you are out of the way. My delivery guy went east instead of west so when I called (as my husband missed the call on the day of delivery as you have to be home to sign for the delivery), I was told that a half hour had passed from their call to us and that I would have to wait for the next delivery date. I asked him where the next delivery was in our town and had my husband meet him to get the elliptical. At least this way, it was better to go across town than having to wait for the next delivery date which probably would have been another week or so.

Customer Review: Better than I had hoped
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

My wife and I read a lot of reviews on this before purchasing- many folks mentioned it made "too much noise to use" after a short period, which made us uneasy. We decided to give it a chance, but we were REALLY nervous. It took about two hours to assemble - everything was packaged extremely well. The unit feels very solid for its size, and the features and functions are straight forward and easy to use. We used it for 30 minutes, and there were some slight noises coming from the wheels. We oiled them, and those noises went away. The next day, the unit began making a REALLY loud noise - yes, too loud to be acceptable. We tried oiling all over, but nothing helped. We finally isolated the noise to the cross bar on the main mast. We had been so paranoid that we would put it together incorrectly and have it make noise, that we had over-tightened the bolts that hold the arm poles to the center mast. We loosened one side by a full turn of the bolt, and the unit has been whisper silent since then. We have used it daily for over a month, and it is still perfectly silent (we have a two year old in the house, and we work out while she sleeps). It would be nice if the heart rate monitors were on the arm poles, and not the stationary support bar, but other than that, the programs are nice, the unit adjusts resistance while you work out to simulate hills - all what you would expect from a quality unit. We chose this unit over a NordicTrak unit as this fit in a smaller area and provided the same features (primarily the 18 inch stride - my wife and I are both over 6 feet tall).
We are extremely pleased, and have recommended this unit to friends.

Customer Review: Makes sense to buy from Amazon: Trainer is a good deal for the money
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Buy from Amazon: after researching and testing we decided on this model and tried to buy one from our local Sports Authority. We went on a Saturday, the listed price was $599 for the 420 model (which seems to have a less sophisticated program head), but they didn't have any in stock; 5 were due in Monday early a.m., they told us to come back Monday evening. We went back Monday, the shipment had not arrived but the price had gone up to $699. The Sports Authority website listed the price of the 420 as $599 with a $122 shipping charge. Amazon listed the 430 for $599 with free shipping. We ordered in from Amazon on Tuesday, 2 days later the shipping company called saying we could have it delivered any day we wanted the following week.
That is, from Amazon: lower price, no charge shipping, speedy delivery.
If you are considering purchasing this from a store, the box is big and heavy, more than can fit in the back of a station wagon I think, and too heavy for a roof rack.
The shipping company Amazon used brought the box right up to my front door. I opened the box and carried pieces inside to where we were setting it up. The heaviest single piece is maybe 40 lbs. The assembly instructions were good; all the tools needed are included although I did decide to use my own screwdriver,
The machine is sturdy. The program options are just what we wanted. These Schwinn ellipticals are rated highly. We looked at some makes that were less expensive but they looked or felt like they were not going to last.
We are very happy with the equipment and the Amazon purchase experience.

Customer Review: Perfect Homebased Machine
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I searched for the best reviews when it came to this product and the Schwinn 430 is by far, the best homebased elliptical machine out there today. I recieved a call 3 days after placing the order that the machine is ready to be delivered. The company needs to make sure someone will be home for the 200lb. box. If you cannot be home on a weekday, you can have it personally delivered on a Saturday. A private company truck does the delivery.

I would rate this elliptical to be just as perfect as the one I use in the gym. The downside is you cannot adjust the incline, so its a better fit for someone short, like myself, at 5'4.

Everything you put together is tidious. I can't believe so many people had problems with that part. The instructions are not difficult to understand if you can read. Make sure you add the correct bolts and washers where they should go. I made the mistake to add the smaller washers instead of the bigger washers where they should go and had to start over again, but it became easier once looking at the mistake.

After having this product for 2 weeks, I had to start a greasing process. Just like inclined skates, be aware that greasing up the wheels will be neccessary, for the machine is quiet, but the wheels will squeek while moving on the strip back and fourth. I use the machine everyday, so I will apply a small amount of grease on the wheels and strip once a week.

Don't worry if you get a 40 minutes workout at the gym and only 20 with this machine. The motor is strong and sturdy and is bound to make you sweat pretty quick.
