About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

Sports reviews of Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer [Discontinued]

Customer Review: Schwinn 430 Elliptical is an excellent home exercise machine
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

We researched about 20 ellipiticals in this price category and selected the Schwinn 430 based on overall customer ratings and brand. We also compared it to second hand machines offered on craigslist, but for a few extra bucks preferred to a new machine and free delivery through Amazon. The giant box arrived via truck delivery on schedule and in good shape, but future purchasers that live in a walkup on a high floor may want to be present at delivery time. Upon opening box, the elliptical trainer is in separate pieces that are easy to carry to the designated room where you plan on setting it up. Assembly was fairly easy if you are handy with a wrench (supplied) and took one person about 1.5 hours. The machine worked perfectly fine upon its first use.

The Schwinn 430 has an elliptical motion comparable to more expensive machines you would find at the gym (LifeFitness). The arms move, providing an extra upper body workout. The computer display is self explanatory and provides various options for resistance. The movement is smooth and the machine feels very sturdy, even for an overweight guy like me. I have only used the machine a handful of times in the first few weeks of ownership and, so far, am very satisfied with its performance. There are some 'squeaks' that other reviewers mentioned, but these sounds stopped after several uses and minor lubing. A few negatives... (1) the arm motion provides a good range, not great range; (2)instruction manual did not provide enough detail on four steps but it was fairly easy to figure out what they meant to say; (3) if you are looking for a trainer that offers true elliptical motion with multiple resistance and incline settings, go for a more expensive model.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Schwinn 430 and the delivery experience through Amazon. Great addition to a home gym, especially for the price. Saved about 40% over purchasing through local sporting goods store and arranging delivery.

Customer Review: Comfortable with my purchase
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I purchased this product a few months back. I can only echo most of the previous reviews saying the good things about this product. I've had no issues with squeaking yet, but I was careful not to overly tighten the bolts on the pivot points.
This product was packaged well. When i received mine from the shipping company, the box was very beat up but no parts inside appeared to be damaged due to shipping. There was some slight scuffing on one of the handles but I believe that was a manufactures defect. Im sure if I called the customer service and asked to have that part replaced, they probably would but didnt seem worth the trouble. Also a note on the packaging, verify you have all your parts before you throw your packaging away. Id suggest you assemble your machine while you still have your packaging. After I unpacked it, I couldnt find parts like the cupholder, but after breaking the styrofoam packaging apart, It seemed to be conveniently hidden in a tapped up compartment.
The display is dim, but acceptable. It would be nice if it had an external input for a heart rate monitor. The grip monitor does seem to work but you have to hold your hands on it for about 2 minutes to get a stable accurate measurement, which means your hands arent on the moving handles.
The machine is pretty long, so if you have tight hallways, you probably wont be able to move it in between rooms without disassembling the tracks.

One positive thing I have found, unrelated to the basics of the machine, is that there is a small 1-2 inch gap between the display, and the bracket below the display. This is just enough room for me to securely slide my laptop (or kindle) into that gap to hold my computer in place so I can work or watch netflix streaming while I'm exercising. While that does cover up the display on the machine, it does take your mind off how long you have been exercising or how long you have left.

Customer Review: Assemby and Ease of Use
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I don't know what all the prior fuss is about. I had no trouble reading the assembly manuel and putting the elliptical together all by myself in under 2 hours. And I'm a female! The parts were labeled correctly, formed correcty and there were no missing or malformed pieces. It is on the heavy side, but my being a stubborn individual-I didn't want to wait for my husband to get back home from his trip in a few days and I was anxious to start using it, so I did it myself. I really had no trouble. But being female if I'm lost in out in the real world I ask for directions, and when it comes to assembling items I read the directions very throughly and line everything up before I begin. Men usually don't follow those methods and hence they get frusted, confused then angry.

This is my first elliptical and for the money this is an excellent value with the features you get. You can input your weight and height and customize it for your target fitness goals, like you can on those more expensive health club machines. The display is large and easy to read. I would be nicer if the background lit up, but I can live with it.

The motions are smooth and the machine is very quiet-very easy to hear your music, the TV or carry on conversations and you don't have to compete with the background noise of the machine-much like you have to do with our treadmill. That thing is noisey.

I'm quite pleased with this unit and I really don't see myself purchasing a more expensive higher end one in the near future, unless this one should go belly up-which I doubt, it is so heavy duty and very well made.

I will recommend this to anyone and everyone. It is by far a superior piece of home exercise equipment for the money that most people can afford. Your health and fitness is worth the investment.

Customer Review: exellent cardio machine with small footprint
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Bought it since it was ( and still is ) on sale on amazon for 599. So far it has been about 2 month ago, and love it! I live in a single apartment on third floor, so I was looking for a rather small machine with minimun noise and footprint. This one just fits the bill perfectly! I can squeeze this machine right in a corner of my living room and it does not stand out at all. The quality of the machine is great. Actually I like it more than the ellipticals in the gym I used to go to. This machine is very sturdy and seems to be able to last a long time. I use it for 4~5 times between 30 - 50 mins every week, with resistance betwen 6 to 10.

Did have a small issue with front horizontal axis right below the dispay where the two push-handle connect though. When I assmbled it, no matter how much I tightened the screw, there always seemed to be a little bit extra space ( about 1/16 inch ) between the horizonal axis and push-handle. So when I swing the handle with higher resistance, I feel and hear the metal of the push-bar clinking and bumping the horizonal metal bar. Kind of annoying but no big deal. Then last weekend I decided to deal with it by un-assemble it and stuck a small shredded cotton ball between one of the push-handle and the horizontal bar. Retightned the screen and problem solved! Now this machine is absolutely noise free and feels super smooth. :)

Also got the iron gym pull-up bar from amazon and it hangs from my door for upper body workout. Now I got everything covered basically since elliptical is great for lower-body and cardio workout. Not more high gym membership fees and I am getting into shape faster. :) It is great to be able to flip the TV channels and watch true blood on HBO while peddling this elliptical at home!

Customer Review: Great Workout and Great Customer Service!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

After giving up on the idea that I would ever make it back to the gym, I decided to buy a home elliptical machine. I have been using Elliptical machines on and off for about 15 years. I prefer Elliptical machines over any other aerobic exercise due to the strenous low impact workout it provides.

I did a lot of research and decided on the Schwinn 430. My criteria was:

1. Quality of machine and workout
2. Affordability
3. Ease of use
4. Reliability
5. Footprint
6. Features
7. Warranty
8. Stride length (min 18 in.)

The 430 met all of my criteria. I have used it every day for the week that I have owned it. I have been extremely pleased. It actually has exceeded my expectations. The workout is top notch. I am in decent shape and get a great workout at level 3. Since there are 16 levels of resistance, I do not believe I will outgrow this machine in my lifetime.

The machine is very well designed and sturdy. The room I have it in is rather small. It fits very well. Even though it has a compact design, it still provides for an eighteen inch stride length, which was one of my criterion.

I was able to assemble it without any assistance in about 2 hours. I did have an issue getting the left handle bar to line up, so actually ended up stripping the bolts. I called Nautilus's customer service. They were extremely helpful and sent the new handle bar out with extra bolts (actually a whole new pack of bolts) the next day. I received the package right on schedule. Could not have been more pleased with the whole interaction.

I highly recommend the 430.
