By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips. Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home. Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.
Sports reviews of Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer [Discontinued]Customer Review: Happiness is a Warm Schwinn 430 Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
First, a few particulars...
- After a week, it developed a knock when the left crank is at the 7 o'clock position. Other reviewers have mentioned it. I found that by keeping my left foot on the inside of the peddle, the knock is minimized or disappears. I will probably call customer service before the 90 day labor warranty is up, as I give this machine a good workout every day.
- Attaching the flywheel assembly to the center bar will be much easier if you place a book, or anything solid, that is one inch or so thick under the center bar to align the bolt holes up (I used my sandals).
- Per recommendation from others, I applied extra lithium grease on the main moving joints. Per one in particular, who recommended synthetic lithium grease so as not to damage the plastic bushings, I used Valvoline SynPower lithium grease available at NAPA autoparts; Home Depot, Loew's and other home improvement center do not carry it. It is black and formulated for auto disc brake bearings, etc., so it should stand up well to whatever punishment I can dish out. The black color also blends in nicely with the black bushings. And silicon lube for the tracks.
- CEVA's (shipper) package tracking is one or more generations behind UPS and FedEx tracking. Their phone number is 800.888.494. With the tracking number, they will direct you to the local station that will be making the delivery. They delivered on Tuesday following the package being marked "shipped" by Amazon on the preceding Friday, so it was pleasantly quick.
- The display is a computer, and like any computer should be plugged into a surge protector.
I did a lot of hands on trials at Sport equipment stores like Dick's before stumbling on the reviews on Amazon. Wish I would have bought it earlier instead of spending all that time researching and reading - actually started out looking for a treadmill - and worst of all, jogging outside for a month with the temperature hovering around negative zero for the high.
All in all, an excellent machine and a great place to buy from.
Customer Review: Great Bang For The Buck Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
The whole process of buying an elliptical machine came from a desire to try something different than the treadmill I have been using everyday for the last twelve years. My trusty treadmill has been a great, reliable performer for over a decade. I was looking for something to be hopefully as reliable and to provide a more balanced and challenging workout, which I believe an elliptical to be.
After many visits to different sporting goods stores and "tryouts" of various brands of machines, my husband and I agreed to purchase a Schwinn product. The decision was based on price point, quality and extensive research on the internet. We read professional reviews, consumer reviews and general product reviews until we could not read anymore.
The first thing about the Schwinn ellipitcals that impressed us, was the smooth action of the machine. It felt on par with more expensive, so called "gym quality" machines. We decided on the 430 because it offered everything we wanted and didn't include anything we weren't concerned with. The footprint of the machine was a definite concern for us, because of the limited space we had to place it. The Schwinn 430 actually takes up less space than the spacesaver treadmill it replaces. It is very easy to move as well.
We have read varying accounts on the assembly time for the Schwinn 430. Usually two and a half to four hours. I'm not really sure what the problems were for other purchasers, but my husband had it assembled and ready for use in 1.5 hours. He took his time and said it was very simple to assemble. We have not experienced any of the squeaking problems we have read about from other reviews. My husband appreciated the heads up from previous reviews, about over tightening bolts to moving components. With this in mind, he was able to alleviate any squeaking problems. The 430 has been perfect since the last screw was tightened on the drink holder.
Overall, we are extremely pleased with our purchase of the Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer. A great investment. A great machine.
Customer Review: The Schwinn 430 Elliptical is great! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
First off I want to say that the main factor in purchasing this elliptical over the plethora of others on the market was the overwhelmingly positive feedback it received here on Amazon. Therefore I feel it's my responsibility to contribute my own $.02
Purchasing from Amazon
Amazon had the best price plus free shipping. I was really surprised by how quickly this item was shipped out. I received it in via freight delivery service in under a week. Please note that this freight service is only obligate to bring this to your door. I wasn't home at the time of delivery but my gf gave the lone delivery a $10 for taking it up to my 2nd floor apt.
Assembly
It really wasn't that difficult at all. You just have to have some patience. I started off by carefully taking all the equipment out of the box (wasn't that easy) and laying it out. The assembly is really straightforward. I found the manual to be more than competent. Like other reviewers mentioned I used the white lithium grease to lube the moving parts. You will be able to easily identify these parts since they are already sent lubricated by the manufacturer. A few people on here gave the product terrible reviews because some of the pieces were wrong or broken. I didn't have this problem.
Using the elliptical
This machine is really sturdy and well built. It runs very quietly and smoothly. Surprisingly the resistance works very well. After using it for 30 minutes I was totally exhausted! In case you're curious I'm 5'9" and 195 lbs. I feel that if I were over 6' the stride may feel a bit too short but for me it's fine.
Negatives
The only negatives I can come up with is the fact that LED screen does not have a backlight and the part where you put your feet on is made of plastic and doesn't have rubber grips. The problem with that is my feet consistently come off the foot pad a bit which makes a little noise. As you can see from my review it's a pretty minor complaint.
Customer Review: Everything I needed! 6 month update Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I've been using this elliptical 6 months now. I'm still very happy with my purchase. I use the machine 3-5 times a week and I am very satisfied with the workout. There was some clicking and squeaking noises at first, but they've seem to work themselves out. Just wanted to update since most reviews are posted after just getting it.
My husband had it together in about in hour with little help from me. We decided to build it in the living room and wheel it to the bedroom, but the corner was too tight. We only had the unassemble the base to get it into the room --- you may want to consider building it in the room you will be using it in. It does roll well once assembled, although it is a bit heavy and you'll need two people to get it moved.
We were very impressed with the quality of the parts for this machine.
I did my first work out right away. The heart rate monitor works - but I'd recommend getting a polar heart rate monitor to more accurately measure your heart rate and colories burned. Its annoying to have to keep placing your hands on the heart rate monitor.
The 16 resistance levels and 6 programs will keep my workouts varied. For a lighter weight machine - it was very sturdy - even on carpet.
It is different using this machine than the ones at the gym - but nothing that was too hard for me to get use to. One thing I noticed with the 430 made me stand up straighter - probably a good thing. Also, I noticed a difference in the stride. At the gym I would take a longer stride now and then to stretch my legs - but I can't do that on the 430.
I noticed my heel leaving the foot plate at first - some other reviewers cited this complaint. However, I noticed with use this doesn't happen anymore. In the beginning I noticed some clicking on the right side - but it seemed to work itself out.
I'm able to get the same intensity of workout at home that I was at the gym - minus the hour long roundtrip drive!
Customer Review: Very pleased with this purchase. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I've owned the Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer for a month now, and so far I couldn't be more pleased with it and I am very glad I purchased it. Should I have problems with it in the future, I promise to update this review.
I had the delivery man leave it in the driveway, and from there I carried it piece by piece into my house. I used a hand truck to bring the heavy part in (I had to go up a few stairs).
Assembly was easy, and the assembly directions were clear. Since then I've used it daily (I think I skipped one day when I was worn out from cutting trees that fell in my yard after an ice storm), and I've had no problems.
Some reviewers note that their ellipticals began to squeak after a few days of use. When assembling mine, I noted that the parts that require grease had grease on them covered in plastic. I took care to squeeze the grease from the plastic so that most of it remained on the metal parts. So far, no squeaking, and the machine is so quiet (compared to my Schwinn exercycle, my Nordic Track ski machine, and a funky old treadmill) that I can listen to the radio or TV without raising the volume above the level I use when I'm not exercising.
I decided to buy the elliptical after surgery for a congenital heart problem. I wanted a full body workout, which I can't get with the exercycle, and I wanted a quieter, more user-friendly full body workout than I can get with the ski machine. So far I find using the elliptical fun, and so exercising on it does not feel like a chore. After the aforementioned ice storm we were without power for a few days, and I was able to use the elliptical (albeit without being able to change the exertion level) without power. I wish it was possible to change the exertion level manually, as it is on the exercycle and ski machine.
By the way, I'm 6' tall, weigh a little over 200 lbs., and wear size 14 shoes. My Bozo-the-clown size feet fit just fine on the elliptical feet pedals.
