By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips. Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home. Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.
Sports reviews of Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer [Discontinued]Customer Review: Great Buy Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Ordered this right after Thanksgiving and specified Dec. 2 between 3 pm & 7 pm for delivery. Shipper was Pilot. I was a little dismayed when I checked the tracking status on Amazon's site and the last entry showed "shipping damage." Called Amazon and was told to check the contents upon arrival and if anything was amiss, Amazon would take care of it. As it turned out, the box was delivered around noon instead of the band of time specified on check out for delivery. Luckily, my son was home and signed for it.
Outwardly, the box looked a little beat up with one metal part protruding from the side of the box. I immediately unboxed the elliptical and found everything to be in good order. It's amazing how they package this machine and all of its parts in its box. There is a lot of rubbish: plastic bags, foam & carboard to get rid of but the packaging is necessary to protect everything during shipment.
The next two evenings, Dec. 3 & 4 were spent assembling the elliptical. I thought the manual was clear and easy enough to follow. The screws, bolts, washers etc. were all nicely labeled and mounted on two carboard holders. The only problem I had was the first step. Due to a welding bead which didn't allow one of the rails to slide in the proper position to screw in the fasteners, I had to use a rasp file to file down the welding bead. Other than that, the parts fitted well and I had no other problems with assembly. All of the fasteners, washers, etc. were used and they were in the right quantities. Included were two wrenches and a combination screwdriver (phillips tip) and hex wrench.
The assembly manual does ask you to inventory all parts and fasteners and to call an "800" number if anything is amiss. Presumably, and from some of the other posts, Schwinn/Nautilus will take care of providing the missing parts and/or fasteners.
I found using my own tools made things go faster but you could assemble this elliptical with the supplied tools.
Operation of the elliptical is smooth and with very little noise. I suppose one would have to wait for a period of continued use to see how much noise this machine develops but for the price ($599.00) and free shipping, I think we got a good deal and a nice exercise machine.
I think my wife and I will make very good use of this elliptical during the cold winter months.
Customer Review: A couple months later... Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I've had this elliptical for just shy of two months. I had read all the reviews about assembly nightmares, missing or damaged parts, noise during use, etc. It seemed most were happy with the purchase except for a few defective products and a bad customer service rep or two, so I figured it was a gamble purchase but odds were in my favor + warranty and all.
Arrival/assembly:
There were no missing or broken parts when I received the machine but the packaging wasn't so hot. Nevertheless, this machine is so sturdy that it would really have to be mishandled hard to have bent/broken parts. None missing, thank god. Assembly was a pain. Not rocket science but tedious and annoying. I'd say it took a couple hours and a couple of the screws seemed to be very stubborn. Sturdy tho! And it got done..
Use:
After the second use I heard the loud screech that other reviews mention. Their tips about losening the bolts 1/4 turn until it stopped were so helpful and no more noise even 2 months later. I did have to tighten the area that attaches to the foot pedal 'thing' because there was a slight squeak. However, it was easy to hear where it came from, simply to adjust and for the price I wouldn't complain. Besides Schwinn recommends you always check the stability and make any needed adjustments each time before use (safety, blah blah blah)
Functionality:
I get a great workout with this machine. Now I'm just shy of 6'3 so I might have liked a tad longer stride length but honestly it's not a big deal and I wouldn't have paid the price difference for it. The display is fine for what it's worth. There are, in my opinion, cool features like 'recovery score' for your heart rate, etc. I do not rely on accuracy for calories or speed but it's close enough I'm sure. The heart rate monitor is s-l-o-w to take readings but it does work--again, price range.
Overall:
What a great buy thru Amazon. While I might have changed a couple tiny things, there is no way it could have happened in this price range so 5 stars. It's so great to be able to workout at home at my convenience. I may not be America's Next Top Model with this elliptical :) but at least I'm getting my 30 minutes of exercise a day without financing some outrageous equipment. I truly feel great and you can't put a price on that.
Customer Review: better quality for less than local prices Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
My husband and I went shopping for an Elliptical after christmas in 2007, I have a medical condition that requires only swimming and elliptical exercise allowed for the health of my muscles. the quality in the store was obvious. there are many brands out there and I am glad we hit the stores before we decided to go online. Most of the reviews for this model are positive. I use other places like [...] and consumer reports. Schwinn has a great quality in bikes so I looked up the reviews. Some of the reviews stated this was hard to put together, Putting the bike together was actually very easy. I did it myself after asking my 17 year old and husband to no avail. It took me about 2 hours just because I wanted to make sure I did it perfectly. I am not very mechanically inclined. I was very surprised how easy it was. the only mistake I made was I didnt put the big washers on the wheel connections and the pole connections. I did realize it before I was done and it took only a couple of minutes to fix. Sound wise I cannot hear the trainer at all. the only sound I hear is the beep as it goes through the settings and my shoes when I am in motion. I has a very nice flow and when it changes gear it is very smooth. The only part that might be questionable is the actual computer. It doesnt look like it will last a very long time if you use it on a daily basis. the buttions are the cheap plastic bubble type that tend to wear very quickly. So far I am extremely happy. I feel like I got at least a 900.00 machine for 599.00 and with free shipping. Couldnt find anything near the same quality for that price in town. and the stores in town for the cheaper models were running 499.-599. We shopped at big5 and academy sports I can tell you had I bought the ones they had I probably would not have been using them for long. In store the models proform and some other I couldnt even find on the internet was falling apart noisy and very thin rails and fly wheels that sounded like they were bad already. I will review this again later to help others with shopping. If any changes happen I always make sur I am heard, I like to get what I paid for and this machine is more than expected and it cam in a week before I expected it to.
Customer Review: Great Elliptical!! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought this item after much research and this particular model was suggested to me by a friend. No problems at all with shipping; package was in perfect shape though only delivered to my back steps. I opened up the box and brought in pieces individually, with the flywheel being the heaviest (though I was able to bring in myself). It took me about 2 hours to put together. Instruction book was better than most I have seen, and only problem was the misprint in bolt sizes, but you can figure that out easily (as everyone has noted on their reviews). The elliptical's size is on the smaller size and fits well in my sitting room. Easily moved if need be.
In regards to the workout. I cross train on my treadmill and found this workout to be as effective. There are a variety of programs so you can vary your workout. The backward motion is a little awkward for me (I am 5'3") but found that holding onto the lower handlebars works well (versus the movable upper ones). The machine is very quiet, only slight squeeking coming from the upper handlebars that disappeared with a little WD40. It has very smooth movement and you can definitely tell a difference with increasing the level, which I was worried about as it doesn't have an incline as some gym machines do. The heel rise can occur when you do not sit back on your heels when working out, so you just need to be aware of your foot placement. The foot pads are comfortable and a good size.
Most of all, for those who do monitor their heart rate, I have a Polar F11 heart monitor (with chest strap) and this monitor is within a 3 beat difference at the most. I recommend to let the monitor read for a minumum of 45 seconds before you follow the rate. This held true for me even if pacing at 70 RPM's or above. I listen to my IPOD when I work out, so I have not used the book holder. The water holder holds 24 oz Polar Spring bottles without any difficulty taking out and replacing the bottle.
I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking at increasing their fitness level in the comfort of their own home. It's very well built/solid, quiet, effective, and affordable ($599, free pad, free shipping).
Customer Review: We absolutely love this machine!! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I have been reviewing/looking at ellipticals since January 2007. I think I have looked at almost every website and been to every store before finally deciding on a machine. I had it down to either the Schwinn 430 or the 438. It all came down to the fact that I am only about 5'3 and the 430 felt more comfortable than the 438. My hubby had no preference, since he is 5'10 and everything felt fine to him. I almost went ahead and purchased the 438 because it did have quite a bit more features, but I am so glad I didn't. I am in farely good shape after having two babies, and this machine has kicked my [....] After only 20 minutes on it, I am sweating as much as when I do Tae bo for an hour. It is easy to use and quit as a mouse. I can use it when my two little ones are sleeping, and they do not hear a thing, this was very important to me. There are enough programs and resistance levels to keep both my husband and I happy. Neither my husband or myself has noticed any rocking or unsteadiness of the machine. It is absolutely perfect.
The assembly of this machine only took my husband about an hour and half all by himself. There was no grunting or groaning about missing pieces or broken items. The delivery company was Oak Harbour, and they were fantastic! The guy was later arriving to our house then expected, but he actually called and let us know. He then preceeded to bring the item all the way into the house, eventhough my husband was there and he could've left it on the porch. The box had no damage to it. I was worried about broken/cracked items after reading other reviews, but Oak Harbour did great. Oh yeah, when we ordered this machine we anticipated a 2-3 week delivery, but it came in just a week!
So overall, I am extremely happy with this machine. I had two friends who purchased Nordic tracks a few months ago and they have had nothing but problems. I think this machine gives just as good a workout as any gym machine. I am so glad we didn't pay $2-3000 for an elliptical. I got everything I needed in a $600 machine!!
If I ever do encounter a problem, I will be sure to update this reveiw.
