By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips. Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home. Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.
Sports reviews of Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer [Discontinued]Customer Review: Great compromise Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
We've had our Schwinn 430 for about 2 months now. My wife and I live in an apartment complex with a crappy gym. For about a year, we belonged to a big downtown gym, went less and less, and finally decided that if the machine was right in front of us, we'd have to use it! And we have.
Purchase: We bought it for $599, as the gold box price was no longer available. So easy with Amazon, we have used them many times before.
Delivery: Eagle shipping leaves a bit to be desired. They only had one set of drivers in our area, and the estimated morning delivery turned into about 4:00 p.m.
Setup: This was the most frustrating part, not because of difficulty with the directions or weight, but because Schwinn quality control is a bit loose. The hinge points for the 2 moving arms are mounted by sliding them over a horizontal bar extending through the main support post that holds the display. The black plastic bushing in one of the arms was too small to fit over the horizontal post. Of course this is only discovered half-way into the assembly. Schwinn must deal with this quite a lot, as the representative easily trouble-shot the issue with me, then overnight shipped a replacement to us. Getting the defective bushing out was very difficult, and I ended up hammering it out by wedging a screwdriver into the plastic. Pliers were not powerful enough. But I digress.
With the new bushing, finishing assembly was a breeze.
Usage: After about a week, the lubricant that comes on all of the moving parts wore off, and the squeaking others complain about began. I purchased some lithium-based lubricant at Lowe's for like $5, partially disassembled and reassembled the machine, and after about a week of working itself in, this baby is noise-free! I'd HIGHLY RECOMMEND lubricating with this type of stuff the first time you put it together.
While not as sturdy as the precor machines at the gym, this is a great product. It doesn't lift or move forward with usage (on carpet). It doesn't sway side to side. The motion is very smooth and quiet, the stride is nearly as long as the professional models but longer than cheaper models. I'm 5'11" and my wife is 5'5" and it's fine for us both. The program modes are adequate. The resistance of the fly-wheel is smoothly gradated, and I doubt the top setting would be easy for anybody. There are two wheels on the front and a handle on the back that make moving it fairly easy, though it is tough to maneuver in tight spaces like our apartment.
Overall impression: Great compromise on affordability and quality. Highly recommended product.
Customer Review: No problems whatsoever Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I did a lot of research on ellipticals before I chose the Schwinn 430.
I had gone to the store and tried some out and was almost ready to buy a Proform or Nordictrack but after I started reading reviews on the models I was interested in, I changed my mind. Seemed the ellipticals I was interested in within my price range ($400--$800) got a few good reviews but the majority of reviews were poor. I hadnt even look at the Schwinn ellipticals until I started reading the great reviews on them.
I decided on the Schwinn 430 due to it's price and the great overall review rating of almost 5 stars. A few reviews were negative stating squeaks or hard assembly but the majority of reviews were great. I am glad I chose the Schwinn and can add another 5-star rating to this model.
First, Amazon had a great price of $599 and FREE shipping. Sears wanted $170 to ship the 430 to me because they didnt stock them at the stores. The ordering process with Amazon was simple and the shipper delivered it to my door within 2 weeks. It would have been within a week if I could have scheduled a weekday delivery but due to work, I had to schedule a Saturday delivery. The shipper even placed the box on my patio just outside the room I was going to assemble it in. The assembly was easy. I found everything clearly marked and the only mistakes made were from me not reading the instructions close enough to use the right washer or bolt. A couple of times I was going to let out a curse only to find it was me, not the instructions. Overall I got it together in under 2 hours. Everything fit and was pretty clearly marked.
I remembered from other post to not over tighten bolts or squeaks could occur. I tightened everything up and just made the bolts snug on the moving parts. I got on the machine and it was flawless. Not so much as a squeak or noise. Smooth, quiet and what impressed me the most was how sturdy it felt. I'm 6' tall 225 lbs and the machine felt very sturdy and steady. My wife is 5'1 and was still able to use it fairly comfortably. The display was easy to program and follow. A backlight on the display might be nice like others have mentioned but it still seemed easy to read to me during the day. Maybe at night in dim conditions I'd have a complaint but to be honest, I cant think of anything to complain about this machine. The price was great, ordering was easy and fast, delivery was free and fast, and the machine is one of the best I've tried. Very sturdy unlike many others I've tried. 5-stars and NO complaints!
Customer Review: Great machine for the price Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I recently graduated from college, where I had a big free gym at my beck and call day or night. Not being a gym person anyway, I was looking to get an elliptical at home after finding it my favorite machine at the gym. I already had an exercise bike but had been using that for years and the boredom was starting to threaten my motivation for working out. Knowing that ellipticals tend to be on the expensive side, I did a lot of research to find one that was highly reviewed and at the right price. Being able to buy from Amazon was an added bonus, as I've buy nearly everything from here and have never once had any problems, including this purchase. Shipping was free with Amazon Prime and reasonably fast but, as has been mentioned, you need to call to arrange a time for delivery because they won't deliver until you do.
Once delivered, it was a bit tricky to get in the house and unload the box, but nothing that can't be done. It was going to be set up in my upstairs bedroom so, being a small female, I decided to unload downstairs and take the parts upstairs rather than the whole box as it was heavier than I am. The instructions could have been clearer but I've put most of my furniture and other exercise equipment together myself, so it was doable in about 2 hours. Was missing one screw that attaches the left upper handlebar to the left lower handlebar but it doesn't affect anything with only 3 screws instead of 4. Once assembled, compared to other machines, the space it takes up is minimal.[...]
My first time on it, I was surprised how smooth and quiet it is. I'm not brand new to exercise, just was on a laziness induced hiatus for a while, and I was surprised that I still had to start on level one. Probably because I'm naturally inclined to go fast on whatever equipment I'm using (I get bored and lose interest going too slow), which is tough for me with resistance higher than the first few levels. Nonetheless, it gives a great workout and feels very sturdy and well-built. It's set up on an area rug over carpet, but doesn't wobble a bit. I wish there were more pre-programmed workouts but there are plenty of options to customize your workout manually. Switching between what is displayed is super easy while riding, too.
All in all, it's a great quality elliptical, especially given how reasonable the price is. I'm very satisfied with the purchase, so much so that I've settled on a Schwinn exercise bike too, to replace my old Pro-Form one that I've worn down to pretty much nothing.
Customer Review: A wise choice Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I am a soldier who has recently returned from deployment. While I was deployed I injured both knees and am unalbe to run due to the impact. I had tried ellipticals while I was deployed and was quite impressed with the work out I got. When I returned I went out and started searching for one of my own. My goal was to keep it under $1000. I tried many different brands and discovered that not all ellipticals are created equal. Many of them are cheaply made and shake side to side or make alot of noise. The stride is very important. I am 6 foot tall and the 16 inch stride on some of them just didnt cut it. I ended up buying a Proform 160 from the Proform website since it had an 18 inch stride and seemed to be sturdy, however, after discovering how little they care about customer service, I cancelled my order. I ended up buying an Image 9.5 from Walmart. I used it for about 3 weeks and came to the conclusion that the foot pedals were spaced too far apart and it put pressure on my knees and made my hips hurt. After thinking about it for a minute it made sense to me, who runs with thier feet that far apart anyway. My feet almost land in a straight line when I run. So I set out to find one with closer pedals. Overall I tried almost 2 dozen different machines and finally found the Schwinn 430 at a fitness store. I tried the 418 and 438 also, but the 430 seemed to be the most comfortable to me. The 438 and some of the other brands seem to have a high arch on the upstroke. The 430 was very smooth and ultra quiet. It is very well made and should last for many years. Amazon had the best deal on it and had it to me in about 8 days. It is a very comfortable machine. After all of this I would say to anyone wanting to buy an elliptical, try alot of them, I tried all the ones at Sears, Oshmans, Academy and Fitness in motion. Make sure the stride length, pedal angle and pedal spacing are comfortable for you, after all, if its not comfortable you wont want to use it. The only thing I think could be improved on the Schwinn 430 is a backlit display. Luckily I work out with the lights on so its not a problem, haha. I tried many machines that were between $2-3000 and this one was still more comfortable to me. It is a heavy machine, so get help carrying it in, but you will be glad its heavy when you ride it. It is some assembly required, but it has fairly clear instructions, so there shouldnt be a problem with assembly. Happy Hunting!
Customer Review: Two Thumbs Up! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This is a best buy for the following reasons:
1) Price is remarkable. Some people gave it four stars because it's not the best out there, but you have to take everything into consideration for the price. Obviously, the best elliptical (in my opinion) is the Precor which I always used at the gym, but then again, that's a $4000 machine. We're talking $600 for this one, and you definitely get the bang for your buck. Plus, it comes with varying levels of resistance, heart monitor, water bottle holder, and free shipping...can't beat that!
2) Quality is apparent. This is no lightweight piece of machinery, although it is easy to move around. The frame is heavy and you feel well-supported (it holds up to 250 lbs.) One good thing I really like is that when you try to stop after going very fast, it stops. I've been on some ellipticals where the momentum of the wheel feels like it's going to throw you off when you try to slow down suddenly. Also, I have always trusted Nautilus to be one of the top manufacturers of gym equipment, and I don't know if Nautilus owns Schwinn, but the box was sent by Nautilus. Warranty is also covered by Nautilus and this, to me, is a big plus.
3) Whisper quiet. This machine is extremely smooth and quiet. You can definitely use this at 4am without waking anyone up. The smooth, gliding motion is also easy on the knees. I have knee problems and my wife has back problems, but we both have no problems when it comes to exercising on this machine. Did I mention that it's quiet?
4) Assembly is simple. Despite what others said, the assembly is very easy - it just takes some time. The instructions are clear, and all the necessary pieces are included. From opening the box to using the machine, it took about 2.5 hours - that's a conservative estimate. You just need to be careful because there are no extra pieces. They give exactly the amount of bolts and washers you need, so don't lose anything.
The only advice I would give is don't tighten anything until you have all the screws at least hand-screwed in. That will save you time if you have a problem hole (mentioned in other reviews as "holes not aligning", but not really the case.) If you do come across this, just focus on getting the bolt in the problem hole first, and the rest should be easy.
Sorry for the lengthy review, but I hope it helps.
