By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips. Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home. Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.
Sports reviews of Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer [Discontinued]Customer Review: Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer
Excellent machine and value. We had a Proform unit that was given to us for free and it quickly turned to junk, started knocking after a few months use. Could not even replace the worn parts as they don't carry certain parts anymore. Resistance was awful as it used a leather belt for friction and no reverse. So I figured I'd spring for a club quality unit like a Life Fitness or Precor model that I'm used to from the clubs I've belonged to over the years. But they cost about 2-3 grand for the home units! And even the 3-4K club pro units many still broke down from time to time anyway.
My Son bought a 430 a year or two ago and I was impressed with it's build quality and smoothness of operation (He has had no issues). I thought I wanted a rear drive unit, but changed my mind after I used his. Some reviews say the front drive units give you an unwanted bunny hop stride, but I have not found this to be true. I was most impressed with the smoothness of the electronic resistance. Brings your heart rate up very quickly depending on the program and level chosen.
Unit went together very easy with the supplied tools (Allen wrench combo with Phillips head and a hex wrench). I think the typo error in the manual regarding which bolts to use for attaching the main unit assembly to the stabilizers (feet) has now been corrected for step 2. Amazon had noted there was an error in the manual for this step. Most of the bolts used are the button top ones that the allen wrench fits into makes assembly a breeze. Even taking my time it only took me about 1.5 hours from assembly to finish, which included unpacking the parts (great packaging) and laying them out before assembly.
A few tips. I sprayed a little extra white lithium grease on each moving part even though they were pre-greased. Spray can at Home Depot is only a few bucks. Same for a spray can of Teflon Silicone spray that I bought to spray on the track wheels and tracks. Don't use WD 40 as it attracts dust and dirt.
I picked up a 4 pack of these black rubber (24 inch by 24 inch) interlocking mats at Loews for $16. They are about 1/2 inch thick (these mats are thicker than the ones that Walmart sells). Because they are nice and firm, they don't allow the machine to rock when placed underneath it. They can also be trimmed to fit around the machine with a sharp knife, razor blade or scissors.
I also cut out two pieces of indoor/outdoor type carpet (bought at Walmart) with type with the rubber backing. Which I cut to fit into the plastic foot pedals. This machine is almost silent operation-wise. The only sounds I was hearing were the squeaking of my rubber sneakers against the plastic foot holders. The two carpet pieces are a cheap and silent fix for this. Some have noted that they thought these foot holders were cheap. But I find them to be very beefy for plastic units.
Lastly, the only con that I see as others have noted is that the computer (which works great) is not back lit. But to spend an extra $200 for the next model up just to get this feature and a fan for the same basic machine . . . one can just buy a battery operated, cheap book light that can clip onto the computer. I like the ones that have a clip on one end and an 8-10 inch gooseneck with the light on the other end. Probably cost about $10. Personally, I can still see the computer without the back light as I just turn a lamp on in the room. I don't workout in the dark anyway.
Conclusion: You can't go wrong with the 430 for $599 "delivered in about 7 days" with Amazon's free shipping . . . for a unit of this quality. For what I almost spent I could get 5 to 6 of these units (one for each room of my house) for what I was going to spend on the Life Fitness or Precor models and after I read all the reviews on those more expensive units, I was not impressed with what I was going to get for my money. Each of the expensive units had drawbacks in their reviews especially the Precor models. The 430 actually had great reviews on Amazon's site and these were from over 150 "actual" users.
Thanks to all who took the time to send in their reviews which helped me make the decision to buy a 430!
Customer Review: Great machine at a great price Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Was considering getting a treadmill (NordicTrak x10 / incline), but my sister talked me into getting the elliptical. I had never even used one. (It's been years since I've been in a gym.) I'm so glad I took her advice. This machine is better than a treadmill. So quiet, more mobile, and low impact. I also love that you can adjust the tension / difficulty. (In my mind, I was picturing those silly machines where you swing your straight legs back and forth.)
I researched the different models and the reviews were VERY helpful in making my decision to go with the Schwinn. (and who doesn't have good memories of their first Schwinn?). The price, with free delivery, was also very good.
Regarding delivery: I had no problems at all. I never had to track it because it arrived 3 to 4 days earlier than anticipated. I got a call from Eagle at 9:30 on a Friday night and the guy delivered it the next day. (Bonus in that I didn't have to miss work to be home to accept it.) As you know, the box is pretty big and I was concerned when I saw that they only sent one delivery guy (smaller than me :)). But bless him. He cartwheeled the box up to the 2nd floor (condo) in about a minute. (And I gladly gave him a $20 tip - hope that was enough?) Try doing that with a treadmill - ha!
Regarding Set Up: Set up was easy. Honestly - anyone who can follow simple instructions can put this together. There is actually an instruction "booklet" with pictures! Not some cheap paper that you have to unfold a bunch of times with instructions in 6 different languages. It took me 2 hours solo (while watching tv). Do yourself a favor: Take your time. Get rid of the packing materials and put the kids and pets in another room. Lay everything out. And get out your cereal bowls. The bolts and washers come shrink-wrapped on a piece of cardboard. Cut the bolts and washers apart and put each type in a bowl with the part number. (Criticism: Yes - the bolts could be better named.) And put shoes on. The fly-wheel is heavy and it has to be upright. If it falls over on your foot, (or a small child :)) it WILL do damage.
I also didn't care for the wiring connections for the display panel. My connections did not "snap" together and the separate wires are exposed before they come together where they are fused. I felt like if I tugged on it too hard, they might come apart. And it turned out that AFTER I had it completely assembled, the cables weren't properly connected. I turned it on and got an error message!!!!! AGHHHH!!!!
So I had to partially take it apart and reconnect the wiring. I recommend connecting the panel to the wiring at your first opportunity, to test it. Before putting on any other parts.
While it was frustrating to have to take it apart again, I was still REEALLY glad it wasn't defective and I didn't have to try to get service or have to pack it back up (in the mangled box) to ship it back.
My machine doesn't make any squeaky sounds at all. But seeing the way that all of the parts connect and work together, I would expect that it would be necessary to occasionally oil and tighten the bolts. Haven't had to yet, though.
The display panel is a little dim and you need to watch out for the cord. But I read that some of the other elliptical models require batteries, so this is still better, I think.
I'm not a gym rat, so my review is probably not as worthwhile to those who spend serious time working out and use the high-end gym equipment. But I can say that this machine provides a good workout. I could hardly do 4 minutes when I got it a month ago and now I'm up to 2.5 miles. I try to do this twice a day. My heart-rate is no longer explosive, I feel great, and I really notice a difference in my leg tone.
I would recommend this machine to everyone.
Customer Review: The 430 - Well Worth it Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
First, I want to say that I have been researching ellipticals for over 5 months now and have finally decided on the Schwinn. My first choice was the Schwinn 431, as it has more programs, however, financially, I settled for the Schwin 430. Only having this for a week, I want to give the basic info that I was continually confused on before buying it.
Some sites state it has 16 levels of resistance, and then some say 8. The truth is, there are 16 levels and there are 8 programs. When you select a program, you then get to select which level of resistance. This makes your basic program have higher workout peaks or longer lower ones. This to me is a huge benefit as some days I just need to get my basic workout in, and some days I really want to work my muscles. Another benefit to the programming is you have 'calorie burn.' Punch in the amount of calories you want to burn and then select the type of program (rolling, strength training, plateau, etc) and the elliptical does the work for you. When you hit the calorie burn, you're done.
Now, as for the foot pedals. I have feet that go numb on ellipticals. I have used a back wheel elliptical for 4 months and found I couldn't put in more than 10 mintues & my feet were numb. The Schwinn has the articulating foot pedals and I can get in about 22 mintues without my feet going to sleep; however, if I do a few back rotations in my workout, my feet stay awake the entire time. Also, my old elliptical made my ankles crack. I haven't cracked on this one yet.
Assembly: Not bad. My husband and I had it done in about 1.5 hours. Pretty good directions to follow and, if you have your own tools (drill) you can decrease assembly time. But be sure not to over drill/tighten.
Motion: Nice and smooth. Had some sqweek/rubbing noise at first, then loosened the outside arm bolts and it's quiet again.
Display: Basic, no real bells and whistles, but adequate for me.
Overall: I am very happy with my purchase. The price can't be beat and the flywheel is huge making it very smooth. I have done 5 workouts (25-30 min) on it and am really enjoying it.
I will update again after awhile. If anyone is considering this one and has a question about it, please don't hesitate to contact me. I contacted an Amazon reviewer from his review and he helped me out a lot.
UPDATE: 20 workouts later, got a 'rub' going on in the flywheel. Not too bad yet, but called Customer Service. The lady told me that it should not rub and to try a small disassemble of the of foot pedal to confirm it was the fly wheel. Called back and let them know it is the fly wheel. Said they'd order the part (unfortunately, the part is 2 weeks out) and a service tech would call to confirm the part made it to my house before he/she showed up. 3 weeks is the timeline I was given. I continue to workout on it - not getting worse yet, but not getting better either.
Finally got the parts (about 1 month later) and had the tech come out. After replacing the parts, found out that the 'rub' was the wheel housing so the tech just flipped the two pieces and all is well. And I now have some new parts!
Overall, I am quite satsified with the machine. Good price off Amazon and it is a very good workout.
October 25, 2008 - Still extremely quiet & absolutely love it! Have recommended it to several of my friends.
December 31, 2010 - Still using it with no problems. Love it, Love it, Love it!!
Customer Review: Great Machine - Review and Instructions to stop/prevent squeaks Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Before I purchased I was most concerned with two things, stability and noise. I am very happy with the purchase as it provides a great workout while being stable and quiet. Below is a review along with instructions for those who are having problems with squeaking.
1. Assembly: Aside from the package being heavy (which is good because the weight helps with stability), it was not too bad to assemble. It took me just under two hours with the TV on. The most difficult issue I ran into was lining all the holes together.
2. Stability: I have hardwood floors and was afraid of the equipment rocking while exercising. I bought an equipment mat (Ironman mat) to go under the elliptical and the rocking has not occurred except for when I intentionally try to rock either by leaning to the extreme right and left while exercising or by doing ~150rpm.
3. Workout: The resistance provides a good workout, but it does not reach the level of resistance you can get with club/gym models. It still gets me sweating, but not as quickly as if the resistance was greater. The heart rate monitor takes a while to respond as it always starts me around 80bpm and then climbs up to where I actually am. I generally don t believe what it says until it peaks and begins to go down/up repeatedly--that can take up to 30-40 seconds sometimes.
4. Squeaking: After only a week or so, the squeaking occasionally occurred. What is nice about the machine is that there are only a few points that can possibly squeak. I already anticipated that squeaking would occur, so I bought silicon lube. The places on the elliptical where squeaking can occur are any point where two metals are touching and moving different directions (or speeds).
For those with squeaking problems:
If you can't determine which joint is causing the noise, then simply lube the main three.
1. Remove the hex bolt from under the hemispherical cap that connects the handle bar to the mast with the supplied wrench.
2. Remove the button-head bolt from the joint that connects the handle bar to the foot assembly. Once done, you can pull the handle bar from the mast and lube the pin that connects.
3. With the foot assembly disconnected from the handles, the rolling leg can be unbolted (under another hemispherical cap) from the flywheel and the pin lubed.
4. Reconnect the rolling leg to the flywheel. *When reconnecting any of the pieces together, do not over-tighten as that can create a lot of friction and be a squeak-point.*
5. Lube the pin that connects the handles to the foot assembly as you reconnect that joint.
It's three bolts per side and it takes about 5 minutes to complete (it's nowhere near as difficult as original assembly). I have done this once and have not had squeaking problems since. You will need to increase your usual resistance as everything feels easier to move for a while due to the lube on all the joints. If this does not stop the squeaking, you might try the pin underneath the foot-hold.
Despite the single run-in with squeaking, I am very happy--especially with how easily I fixed it. With proper maintenance I don't see me throwing this out for a long time. Have fun with your purchase, and keep the tools that come with it!
Customer Review: SO FAR SO GOOD! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I recently purchased the Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer after a good 6 months of researching each and every kind of elliptical trainer available. I have used several types at gyms therefore I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted and needed. I knew I needed one for a reasonable price but had heard fairly negative things about ellipitcals under $1000. I also knew I needed one that was smooth and quiet and gave me the overall workout that I desired without having to go to a gym. I have week knees and ankles so smoothness was key. Over the 6 months, I kept going back to the Schwinn 430. The reviews were excellent and even the web-sites that specialize in reviewing excerise equipment had recommended this model for the price. There were only a hand-full of negative reviews and I made sure I read all of them. There was a couple continuing underlying factor in the negative reviews. One was missing or wrong parts. The other was a developed squeeking or thumping noise after approximately 2 months of continued use. This is my experience so far:
Purchased my elliptical on January 23rd, shipment arrived February 2nd via California Sierra Express. They will call ahead of time to arrange for delivery. All parts were there and labeled clearly. My husband put it together in approximately 2 hours. He did say some of the holes didn't line up properly but that is nothing that a few garage tools can't fix. He preferred to use his own tools instead of what was provided as a socket wrench makes assembly much quicker.
Now I've only used the machine 3 times, but so far, so good. I will update as time goes by. There are no squeeks or thumps at this point. I can imagine that over time with extended and frequent use, the parts would need to be lubricated. I had told him that based on other reviews, not to tighten the moving-parts bots too tightly, though they do have to be tightened to a certain degree because they provide washers with every bolt.
The ride is extremely smooth and quiet so far. My heel does come off the pedal as some others have mentioned, however, this does not bother me or make for an uncomfortable ride. The programs are excellent and provide me with the kind of workout I need. The lowest level of resistence is still a pretty good workout over a 30 minute period. I find the upper body workout to be quite good too.
The display is fairly good and easy to understand. There is no back-light, which would only bother me if I worked out in a dim-lit room, which I don't. The heart-rate monitor takes time to register but is a good feature. The main thing I like about the programming is being able to enter in a calorie goal + length of time I want to work out + the program I want to use, and the computer adjusts from there.
It is a sturdy, stable machine, but small enough to fit inside our bedroom. Overall, I love this machine and can already feel a difference. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to get an excellent overall cardio workout, wants to lose weight, wants a little toning, or just wants to stay in shape. It will do all those things and more.
