Sports reviews of Schwinn 20-Function Bike ComputerCustomer Review: Inexpensive yet high quality gadget Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
If you are looking for an inexpensive way to keep track of your bike mileage, or to see just how fast you're coasting down that big hill, this is the device for you.
Installation wasn't as difficult as some of the commentary for this item described it to be, and this is the first one I've ever installed. As long as you follow the directions, you'll be okay. Make sure you keep the instruction manual, as you will probably need the wheel diameter codes provided on the manual when you replace the battery (all data is lost when the battery goes).
As far as functionality, it has more features than my Specialized Turbo Computer, and is even backlit. This Schwinn computer is installed on my girlfriend's Schwinn MTB, and we tested it by pedaling alongside each other and the readings were exactly the same. It offers a programmable "maintenance reminder" that tells you when you should have your bike serviced (choice of 200, 400, or 600 mile intervals). The air temperature display is a nice touch, but it may suffer from a sort-of "greenhouse effect," as it seemed to display a warmer temp. than actual, but it wasn't too far off. It also offers a "scan" function, so you can see all the functions as you ride, and it powers up when you start rolling and powers down when the bike is idle after five minutes.
As long as you follow all installation and programming instructions to the letter, you will (or should) get lots of use out of it.

For the price of under $10, you get 17 useful functions. Most the bike computers charge 2-3x as much for half the functions. I had to buy a second one because I accidentally yanked the black wire out of the magnetic sensor attached to the front spoke. Not sure how this happened, but since it is not wireless, you will want to tape the wire to the spoke in such a way as to minimize the chance that it will be yanked out by a branch. My only real complaint is that there is no feature that will allow you to turn on backlight when you are night riding. You can click the left button and it will light for about 2 seconds and that's it. Other than that, no complaints about the product at all. Best value for the money.
***Edit: There is one defect with the computer and that is the thermometer. It seems to be accurate so long as the sun isn't shining directly on it. If it's a night or evening right or you are riding somewhere like a forest where there isn't a lot of direct sun, the thermometer seems pretty spot on. But if the sun is shining directly at it for a period of time, I've had the screen overheat and go black and it gives wildly inaccurate temp readings. Not that it's the most important thing, but just something to keep in mind. Still a great product. I'm about to buy another one now since my bike was stolen and bike computer right along with it.
Customer Review: Great item, works perfect, very hard to set up. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This item is really great for the price and works really good. We have been using it for a couple of weeks and like it. It's nice to know how far you have gone and have the time and temperature. Installing it was very easy and only took a few minutes but the instructions are just about useless as far as setting up the reading on the screen. Their very confusing and not accurate. I don't know who wrote them but I don't think they actually had the thing in their hands when they wrote them. I just played with it for a while and finally figured out how to set everything on my own, it just took a few hours. If you can set a digital watch, it's about the same. It's hard to check anything on it while riding. You have to stop most of the time to switch between any of the reading. It's pretty easy to read while riding, even in bright sun light. It has no way to turn it off that we can find, you just have to let it go off on it's own and that wastes the battery. It starts on it's own so unless you remove it, any time you move the bike it comes on again. If it's back lighted for night riding we haven't figured out how to turn that own so we can't see it at night. Other than being very hard to set up it's a good little item for the price we gave for it of under $10.
Customer Review: Great and great reviews Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This seems like a great item and I suggest reading all the reviews for more information on set up. I found the set up for the wheel factor a little difficult. One review says the "Bontrager 700 x 35C tire has an outer diameter of 2197 mm."
I have a 700 x 35B. I measured the radius at 14"--that is including the tire to the ground-- hence a 28" Diameter. 28 X 25.4mm x 3.1416 = 2234. The instruction sheet lists under wheel diameter 28" factor of 2237. Not a difference to concern for but their listing is under the part without the tire. This I do not understand. I have measured a half mile with my vehicle and will check accuracy as soon as it stops raining. If I can feel comfortable that I have this wheel factor correct then this looks like a great item and yes for only $10. Never tried any other bike computers so I cannot compare. Just here and now this looks like a winner. Have had time to check against two measured distances. Seems it is reading .05 of a mile high per mile. I think I have it set at the factor of 2234 so I will change it to 2237 and try again. Probably will not bore you with further up dates unless this does not come out 100% OR CLOSER.
Customer Review: Inexpensive and great bike computer. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Well, I got this bike computer cause it was on sale $9.99. I figured i will give it a try. I found this little computer to be very accurate as far as the distance, speed and calories burned go, this is great. The biggest issue is to make sure you got the magnet very close to the sensor, seems that the magnet has to be close and right next to the sensor. Once you got the right set up then you have to make sure you will enter the 4 digit number (tire size), for instance my bike has 26" wheels and right next to the tire size it says 2025. Entering everything else is a simple task. Once you set it up properly and enter the right info you will love this computer. As far as using it, right button will scroll the menu down. Left button when held for 3 sec will reset all the info except the odometer and that is understandable cause that keeps track of you total mileage of your bike. To reset the computer you press the left and right buttons at the same time for 3 sec, and then you have to enter all the info again. The biggest thing is to read the menu and it will explain how it works. I know I like my bike computer.
