Sports reviews of Schwinn 20-Function Bike Computer

Customer Review: Terrific Schwinn Bike Speedometer
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is my third Schwinn Bike Computer (Speedometer). Schwinn 17-Function Bike Computer The only reason I got this one is to replace a 12 function model that was a great little speedometer, but got broken during a move a couple of years ago. I still have one of that model on my wife's bike.
I must admit that Schwinn's instructions seem to get a little more vague with every model they come out with, but the unit isn't all that difficult to set up once you figure out what they're talking about in their setup manual and since I managed to set it up I won't lower my rating for that as long as it works like it should.
As mentioned by a few others in the reviews, the spacing of the sensor is really extremely critical to proper functioning of the unit. So is inputting the correct tire size so you won't be registering 65mph when you're only doing 5mph!
Overall, I find the speedometer to be every bit as accurate as the 12 function model was, which was really great, with the addition of 5 more functions. I like the added feature of the temperature readout here in Arizona where I do my riding. I enjoy knowing just how miserable I am from the heat! It seems to be within a degree or so of any other thermometer I have checked it against.
I started biking again after a hiatus of over 2 years to try ridding myself of excess weight I put on after I quit smoking and just for the enjoyment of cycling again, so it doesn't hurt that it gives me an idea of calories burned either.
I can easily give the Schwinn 17 function Bike Computer a 5 star rating as it does everything Schwinn claims and does it very well! Unlike some others who rated it lower than 5 stars simply because they didn't know for sure how long it would last, I have never had a problem with the longevity of Schwinn products, so it gets 5 stars from me!
Once again, take the time to properly measure your tire and correctly space the spoke sensor and you should love this unit!

Customer Review: All Around Great Bike Computer!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This computer is great! I feel it's very accurate and extremely helpful in tracking progress. Installation took me about ten minutes, but was not nearly as confusing as some people made it out to be.
The one tip I'll give you is that the sensor magnet(attached to the spokes of your front wheel) and the sensor (attached to your bike's fork) need to be very close together, almost touching. This is what took up most of my installation time. Before you secure the sensor magnet and sensor be sure you spin your wheel a few times and make sure the two are close, but not touching.

The unit comes with 7 tie straps. Two to secure the computer platform, 2 to secure the sensor, and 3 to secure the wiring running from the fork up to the computer platform (I only used 2 to secure the wiring).

I think using it is a breeze. The right button will cycle through your computer options such as odometer, distance traveled, time, time used to travel from one point to another, speed, average speed, etc. The left button will let you reset most functions simply by holding the left button down for approximately 3 seconds. You can do a total computer reset by holding down the left and right buttons together for approximately 3-4 seconds.

Make sure you read the directions before you begin to set up your computer. More importantly, look up your "Wheel Factor" for your "Wheel Diameter". For example, if you have a bike with 26" wheels you should type in "2073" when you first set up your computer. You need to do this for the sake of accuracy in your computer, otherwise you will have to reset it and input the proper information.

I hope this helps. Happy buying!

Customer Review: Good for estimating speed and distance, but nothing else
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

When you set this thing, its best to measure the outside circumference of your tire using a tape measure then convert this to mm for the "wheel factor". For example Bontrager 700 x 35C tire has an outer diameter of 2197 mm.

If you try to cheat this by multiplying pi times twice the outer radius you will get an error that will very quickly accumulate even on short rides (I observed an -11% error with both the speed and distance traveled).

Once this is set, decide on km/hr or mph and fill in the rest of the setup. Afterwards, take the bike on the road for a few miles then check with Google Maps or your car's odometer to see if your distance traveled is reasonable. That is how I was able to determine the distance error.

The calorimeter is off by -25% on average. You're best off using the formula:

CalBurned = Hours x 60 x (-55.0969 + (0.6309 x AvgHeartRate) + (0.1988 x Weightlb x 0.45359237) + (0.2017 x Age) )/4.184

[from "Prediction of energy expenditure from heart rate monitoring during submaximal exercise", L. R. KEYTEL, J. H. GOEDECKE, T. D. NOAKES, H. HIILOSKORPI, R. LAUKKANEN, L. VAN DER MERWE, & E. V. LAMBERT that was published in the Journal of Sports Sciences.] to find a better estimate of calories burned.

I reccomend the blue Nike triax C8 Heart Rate monitor to help you out with this. A reasonably accurate way to find max heart rate is

MaxHR = 205.8 - (0.685 x Age)
[Journal of Exercise Physiology (2002)]

One final note: the time recorded by this computer is the total time in motion, so if you stop for traffic or breaks your average speed isn't greatly effected.

Customer Review: Just what I wanted
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I picked this computer up to tell me how fast and how far I was going on my sightseeing/exploring rides. Some I could gauge by driving the route, but sometimes I also ride where cars can't go. It took me a few minutes longer than it should have to install, basically because the instructions told me to use a Phillips-head screwdriver to attach the computer mount to my handlebars...but there are none, you are supposed to use the enclosed zip ties. Lining the magnet up was fairly simple, there is a chart to enter the wheel factor (diameter times pi, which is the distance traveled in one revolution of the wheel) which is imperative so the displays are correct, punched in my weight, age, etc. and off I went! I tracked with ease my distance, max speed, average speed, calories burned and time. You can reset the distance without resetting the odometer (nice), when I did, it also reset the average speed and time. It is also backlit, which is super nice. Not sure about the battery life because I have only had it a couple of days, but I did read in the instructions that it powers off after 5 minutes of inactivity, which should help a great deal. That may or may not have bitten me on my last ride when I stopped to take pictures and realized a piece down the road that it was not tracking. Or it could have been because the computer was not be firmly seated on the mount (I may have leaned on it taking pictures, I don't think the ride made it loose). That's so far the only problem I have had, but easily remedied by popping it into place. This was the only product I considered and I am definitely not a pro, but this unit works perfectly for me.

Customer Review: Solid piece of equipment for very little money.
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I had no problem installing this unit. Took 2 minutes. First attach the sensor loosely with the tie straps on the fork so you can slide it up and down, attach the magnet, then slide both up and down until they're 1mm apart (note the arrow on the sensor). Tighten the straps on the sensor, and tighten the screw on the magnet. I don't know how it could be easier!

I will say, the instructions are lacking a bit. I know they want to sell this for cheap, so the instructions are printed in about a 6 point font with 5 languages on 1 sheet of paper. So if you want to look up "How to reset trip odometer" it's not like you'll be looking in an index to find it. You have to scan the small print first.

As to the function of the unit, it works GREAT. The software in this is very well done. There aren't any annoyances that I've found that you generally see in cheap electronic.

To calibrate, you're supposed to enter the circumference of the tire in millimeters, and there's a little chart in the instructions that converts your wheel diameter to MM. However, I went a step further and actually measured how far 1 rotation of the wheel would take me. First I made sure the tires were inflated properly, then I put the valve stem at the low point of the wheel aligned with a crack in the sidewalk. I then walked the bike (while sitting on it) for 4 rotations of the wheel, and measured the distance, divided by the number of rotations and converted to millimeters. I found my measurement to be to be about 3% smaller than the chart, probably due to the tire compressing under the bike and body weight.
