So, I bought this bike rack about 6 months ago. I wanted to get fit, so I bought a bike. However, I didn't feel safe riding it around on the streets, and I wanted to go to the park and ride. I researched bike racks, and finally decided on this one. It fits my car, a Chevy Aveo hatchback, and every other car I have tried it on (Dodge Neon, Kia Rio, Toyota Camry), and it is really secure and strong. I used it all around town with one or two bikes on it, depending on the occasion.
But here's the real thing. In August we moved from Ohio to Nevada, and we wanted to take our bikes. So, we strapped on both of our bikes and headed across the country. We never felt nervous about the bikes, and every couple hundred miles, usually when we needed to get gas, we would tighten the straps. We went through mountains and hit some pretty rough road, and the bikes never moved. This rack is awesome. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a rack.
I take my bike to campus every day, so the rack never comes off of my car. I just keep it, and the bike, on my car 24/7 and it has never, ever been an issue. I even hit a monster pothole the other day, and the rack sort of bounced up and down, but it did not seem like it was going to come off in any way. The only thing I noticed is that the two straps that go down, as opposed to the ones that strap to the sides, sometimes come undone. When you tighten them without the weight of the bike on it, they really aren't tight enough. That being said, I have driven all over town with only the side straps connected and it is still really secure.
After 6 months of really heavy use, the straps are still looking good, and the rack stays in place.
